An interactive/real time poem made with trained Supported Vector Machine and Histogram of Oriented Gradients. This work continues the exploration of new iterations based in sensors and image recognition software that can translate different stimuli into metaphors and other poetic constructions. As you can see, sentences respond to the movements of the hand.

net@ari is a real-time based movie made in 1985, programmed with an Atari 2600. In this work, Merhi explores the use of language (computer language) as the basis of the digital cinematic experience. The computerized film is composed by 3 interlaced rows. On the first row viewers can the programming instructions continuously changing . On the second row the instructions turn into variables, showing the location of the characters and the music notes played --this is like the script of the movie. Finally, on the third row there is the movie composed by 2 rectangles that are moving on different times on a large square. When the rectangles touch each other, a random 8 bit melody is produced. In this sense, the viewer sees not only the interaction between the characters, but also the process that generates the movie. The unconscious state of the machine is represented by the change of colors, creating similar patterns to those that are being used by contemporary designers and fashion designers. This is an interesting feature if we consider that the CPU was made in 1978. The endless change of color patterns occurs as a result of the original hardware structure, keeping the screen active during the time the machine is on. Yucef Merhi (born February 8, 1977) is a Venezuelan artist, poet and computer programmer, based in New York.
Yucef Merhi was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He studied at Universidad Central de Venezuela and New School University.. His artistic practice began in the mid 80s. He is known as the first artist in exhibiting a work of art that included a video game console, the Atari 2600, back in 1985. As the pioneer of Digital Art in Venezuela, Merhi has produced a wide body of works that engage electronic circuits, computers, video game systems, touch screens, and other devices in the presentation of his written words, like the Poetic Clock, a machine that converts time into poetry which generates 86.400 different poems daily . The resulting artworks expand the limitations of language and the traditional context of poetry, proposing a bold new role for the poet in our culture.
Merhi's career encompasses a world wide exhibition record in places such as the New Museum of Contemporary Art; Bronx Museum of the Arts; El Museo del Barrio;Eyebeam Art and Technology Center and Exit Art, all located in New York; as well as the Orange County Museum of Art (California); De Appel (Amsterdam); Museo Michetti (Rome); Borusan Culture & Art Center (Istanbul); Paço das Artes (São Paulo); Museo del Chopo (Mexico DF); Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Yucatán (Yucatán); Museo de Bellas Artes (Caracas); Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Caracas); Science World British Columbia(Vancouver); among many others. He also participated in the official selections of the 7th International Festival of New Film, Split, Croatia; the 2007 Bienal de São Paulo – Valencia; and the 10th Istanbul Biennial.
