Police investigate suspicious fires in Murray Mallee

TWO suspicious fires in the Murray Mallee during the weekend have police appealing to the public for information.

The first fire broke out at Schenscher Road at Monarto about 3pm Saturday and was attended by the Country Fire Service.

"Witnesses reported hearing a bang and then seeing a fire in roadside shrubs," a police spokesperson said. 

"The flames were quickly extinguished."

About 5.30pm police and the CFS were called to a second fire, 32 kilometres away at Jervois Road, Woods Point after a motorist witnessed a grass fire.

The police spokesperson said the cause of both fires was under investigation.

"Police are asking anyone with information on the fires, or if they saw anyone acting suspiciously in the areas during these times, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at www.sa.crimestoppers.com.au," the spokesperson said.

"Police patrols, as part of Operation Nomad, target bushfire prone areas throughout the state on high risk fire danger days. 

"Anyone who sees any suspicious activity, including people, vehicles or behaviour, in fire danger areas should report it immediately to the police assistance line 131 444. 

"Where possible provide descriptions of people or their vehicles, including registration numbers."

In March, fire crews battled a blaze at Rockleigh for more than five days.

The fire which broke out in scrub burnt almost 1500 hectares and threatened properties and businesses including the Monarto Zoo.
