Fifty more people were wounded in the attack at the mall in Nairobi, said Abbas Gullet, head of the Kenyan Red Cross. The gunmen burst into the mall and shot indiscriminately, taking some people hostage, according to a senior Kenyan government source. "All of a sudden we heard some shots and people rushing," said Zulobia Kassam, who was having coffee at the mall. "We realized we were under attack. We rushed to the back, trying to hide and we heard random shots from everywhere -- upstairs, downstairs." She said they stayed in hiding for about 40 minutes before sneaking out through a back door. "People were petrified, crying, praying," she said. "We were told there were hostages being held." It was unclear how many hostages the attackers took, but police are trying to negotiate for their release and retake the building, according to the source. Crowds dashed down the streets as soldiers in military fatigues crawled under cars to get closer to the mall, guns cocked. Surveillance helicopters flew overhead. Police took those rescued from the building to a secluded place for vetting to ensure they were not attackers. They streamed away from the mall in a straight line, arms raised up in the air. Attackers appear to be of Somali origin, a Kenyan government source and Western diplomatic sources told CNN. The military asked local media not to televise anything live because the gunmen are watching the screens in the mall. "We urge Kenyans to keep off Westgate mall, adjacent roads and its environs until further notice," the interior ministry said in a statement. "We're doing our job to ensure that everyone is evacuated to safety," the ministry said. "This is a scene of crime, let police do their job." Authorities said multiple shooters were at the scene and terrified shoppers were hiding inside the mall, which is popular among expatriates and the wealthy.

Gunmen open fire in a shopping centre in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, reportedly killing 15 people and wounding dozens more. At least 15 people have reportedly been killed in a suspected terrorist attack on a shopping mall in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. Gunmen opened fire and detonated grenades inside the Westgate centre, a mall popular with expatriates. Police chief Benson Kibue described the incident as a terrorist attack, telling the AP news agency up to 10 men exchanged gunfire with police. Abbas Guled, of the Kenya Red Cross, told Reuters at least 15 people had been killed. "The casualties are many and that's only what we have on the outside," he said. "Inside there are even more casualties and shooting is still going on." Abdi Osman Adan, a journalist in Nairobi, told Sky News staff at a supermarket and a jewellery store had reportedly been taken hostage. Witnesses reported seeing the attackers "firing at any police officers who tried to approach the building", he said. Graphic photographs showed people with serious injuries being treated at a makeshift hospital inside a food court. Other images from inside the mall showed pools of blood and upturned tables and chairs from where people had fled the shooting. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, although the Somali militant group al Shabaab had previously threatened to attack the mall. Rob Vandijk, who works at the Dutch embassy, said he was eating at a restaurant inside the mall when the attackers threw hand grenades inside the building. He said he heard gunfire and people screaming as they dropped to the ground. Satpal Singh, who was in a cafe when the attackers struck, ran downstairs and was shot near the main exit of the mall. "A Somali guy shot at me," he said. "The guy who shot me was carrying a rifle, an AK-47." Another witness, who gave only his first name, Jay, said: "They were not speaking Swahili. They spoke something that seemed like Arabic or Somali." In a message posted on Twitter, Kenya Police urged the public "to remain calm" and not to speculate about the attack. "We urge you to stay away (from the mall)," they added. Westgate is situated in western Nairobi and is popular with both foreigners and rich Kenyans. According to the centre's website, it is the city's "premier shopping mall" and offers a "serene and safe enviornment away from the city centre hubbub". It has more than 80 stores and features a waterfall with tropical gardens.
