A model (from Middle French modèle//aew), sometimes called a mannequin, is a person who is employed to display, advertise and promote commercial products (notably fashion clothing) or to serve as a subject of works of art.

Modelling ("modeling" in American) is distinguished from other types of public performance, such as an acting, dancing or mime artist, although the boundary is not well defined. Appearing in a movie or a play is almost never considered modelling.

Types of modelling include fashion, glamour, fitness, bikini, fine art, and body-part models. Models are featured in a variety of media formats including books, magazines, movies, newspapers, and TV. Models sometimes are featured in movies (Looker, Tattoo), reality television shows (America's Next Top Model, The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency), or music videos ("Freedom! '90", "Wicked Game", "Daughters").

A modelling agency is a company that represents a group of models which they call their model board. Model bookers (also called "bookers" or "agents") manage a model's career. Agents help a model find jobs, book jobs, give advice, and email or give copy books and comp cards to various clients they work with (a comp card is a selection of pictures printed on a card, a copy book is a scanned version of a models portfolio). Agents may send models to various clients and schedule modelling interviews (also called go and see or castings).^{[citation needed]}

Jourdan Dunn (born 3 August 1990 in London, England) is a British fashion model. She was discovered in Hammersmith Primark in 2006 and signed to Storm Model Management in London shortly thereafter. In 2008, she was the first black model to walk a Prada runway in over a decade. She has attracted attention because of the lack of black models in the fashion modelling industry.

Dunn made her runway debut in the New York shows in the fall of 2007, walking in shows for Marc Jacobs and Polo Ralph Lauren, among others. In 2007, she was featured on British Vogue as a "new star," and in 2008 Style.com listed her as one of the top 10 newcomers.

Dunn has modelled for Burberry, Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent, Victoria's Secret, Topshop, Jaeger, Gap, Shiatzy Chen, Benetton, H&M, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.

In July 2008, she appeared on the cover of the Italian Vogue issue devoted entirely to black models. She has also been featured on the cover of American, British and Teen Vogue as well as covering i-D, Pop, Sunday Times Style, Luella magazine, ASOS.com magazine and French Elle. She has appeared in editorials for American, Italian, Russian, French, Japanese, British and Teen Vogue, French Elle, i-D, Dazed & Confused, W, and V. Pam Hogg is an iconic fashion designer from the United Kingdom.

Hogg had a meteoric rise to fame after her studies of Fine Art and Printed Textiles at the Glasgow School of Art, where she won the Newbury Medal of Distinction, the Frank Warner Memorial Medal, the Leverhulme Scholarship and the Royal Society of Arts Bursary, which subsequently took her on to further study at the Royal College of Art in London, where she gained her Masters of Art degree.

She joined her first band ‘Rubbish’ at the end of the seventies regularly supporting The Pogues in their infancy.

Pam Hogg launched her first fashion collection in 1981. She was, along with Bodymap, one of the new wave of designers who emerged at the beginning of the 1980s in London. Hogg first sold out of Hyper Hyper in London's Kensington and later from her own shop in Newburgh Street always refusing to ‘sell out’ to the mainstream fashion industry.

Mid eighties, still fueled by the excitement and freedom of Punk and The Blitz, Hogg infiltrated the elitist ranks of the conventional fashion world with her self-taught wild brand of outrageous creations^{[citation needed]}, establishing a highly respected fashion career^{[citation needed]} and continued success^{[citation needed]} with her internationally renowned shop^{[citation needed]} in the heart of London’s Soho.

Abbey Lee Kershaw (born 12 June 1987 in Melbourne, Australia) also known as Abbey Lee, is an Australian fashion model. Following several years of success leading up to the 2011 fashion seasons, V magazine dubbed Kershaw a supermodel.

As a child, Kershaw says she was "always in the hospital." When she was four she suffered from meningitis and had to have two spinal taps. She also had a tumor on the knee, and several broken bones from climbing trees. She grew up in Kensington and attended St Michael's Catholic Primary school in North Melbourne in which she stated that she "grew up with 42 nationalities" explaining in an interview that her primary school of 150 children was very multicultural. She then attended the Academy of Mary Immaculate in Fitzroy.^{[citation needed]} She later went on to win the Australian 2004 Girlfriend Model Search. After high school, in 2005, she moved from Melbourne to Sydney to begin modeling. She lived 100 meters from the beach and it was while at the beach where she got scouted by Chic Management's Kathy Ward, the model scout that also discovered Miranda Kerr and Samantha Harris. She signed with Chic Management within weeks.

Liu Wen (simplified Chinese: 刘雯; traditional Chinese: 劉雯; pinyin: Liú Wén; born January 27, 1988) is a Chinese fashion model. She is the first model of Chinese descent to walk the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. In 2010, she became a face of Estée Lauder alongside Constance Jablonski.

Liu was born into a working class family on January 27, 1988, in Yongzhou, a city in the Hunan province of China. Because of China's one-child policy Liu Wen is an only child. As a teen her mother encouraged her to be professional, to eat well, and, critically, to enter the modeling contest which led to Liu Wen's discovery.

Liu started her modeling career in 2005 when she entered the New Silk Road World Model Contest, a contest previously won by international covergirl Du Juan. Although she did not win that competition Liu Wen soon began working fulltime as a model, becoming a national success story when she landed the cover of Chinese FHM. She has accepted modeling work with Chinese fashion magazines like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.
