Chemainus /ʃʌˈmeɪnəs/ is a community located in the Chemainus River Valley on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
Founded as an unincorporated logging town in 1858, the Chemainus is now famous for its 39 outdoor murals. This outdoor gallery has given birth to many businesses, including a theatre, antiques dealers, and eateries. The tourist industry stemming from the murals helped rejuvenate the town after its large sawmill closed in the early 1980s and was replaced by a smaller but far more efficient mill.
The name "Chemainus" comes from the native shaman and prophet "Tsa-meeun-is" (Broken Chest). Legend says that the man survived a massive wound in his chest to become a powerful chief. His people took his name to identify their community, the Stz'uminus First Nation, formerly the Chemainus Indian Band.
The railroad arrived in the 1880s and by the early 1920s the town's population had ballooned to 600 persons. Chemainus was eventually designated a census populated area by Statistics Canada comprising the more built-up residential and commercial neighbourhoods. Its population had further grown to 3035 residents by 2011. A larger more inclusive Chemainus area is customarily regarded as comprising part of the District of North Cowichan that lies north of the Chemainus River. This is the area covered by the Chemainus Advisory Committee set up as a consultation body by North Cowichan.

During the Winter of 2013, Benshi Media spontaneously decided to visit Vancouver Island on a whim, without any predetermined plans other than to shoot what popped out at us as interesting. While relaxing in a homely coffee shop in the small town of Chemainus, a kind elderly lady approached us and informed us of local school that epitomized the culture and community of the Island, and that warranted coverage. This is the story of Chemainus Secondary. https://www.facebook.com/benshimedia https://twitter.com/benshimedia http://www.benshimedia.com/

http://www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http://www.facebook.com/ctvvi CHEMAINUS - A crucial vote will make or brake Vancouver Island Rail. The Regional District of Nanaimo Board Members will cast their votes for the future of the E & N Rail. The Island Corridor Foundation has deals with three other regional districts and needs Nanaimo on board to revive the rail line. The ICF needs Nanaimo to stake more than $900,000. The funds will be used to begin repairs on bridges and trussels but not all members are ready to break the bank. Members from Parksville and Qualicum are reluctant to pony up the cash. They suspect the rail will end up like a bottomless money pit and the rail line could cost tax payers millions of dollars. ICF's Graham Bruce needs Nanaimo to step up and he has Joe Stan...
See the entire trip at http://www.everytrail.com. I'm still waiting for my motorcycle to arrive in Vancouver for the trip home to Ottawa so I'm exploring the island in a rental car while I wait. Today I plan to head back down to Duncan and west to Lake Cowichan, retracing my route here yesterday before branching northwest along the north shore of the lake. The road (#18) continues north and then circles back towards the east shore of the island at Nanaimo. I'll decide at that point whether to explore further north along the coast, spend some time in Nanaimo, or head back down to my lodging at Chemainus.
What I thought wasn't mine
In the light, wasn't one of a kind
A precious pearl when I wanted to cry
I couldn't 'cause I wasn't allowed
Gomenasai for everything
Gomenasai, I know I let you down
Gomenasai till the end, I never needed a friend
Like I do now
What I thought wasn't all so innocent
Was a delicate doll of porcelain
When I wanted to call you and ask you for help
I stopped myself
Gomenasai for everything
Gomenasai, I know I let you down
Gomenasai till the end, I never needed a friend
Like I do now
What I thought was a dream, a mirage
Was as real as it seemed, a privilege
When I wanted to tell you, I made a mistake
I walked away
Gomenasai, for everything, Gomenasai, Gomenasai
Gomenasai, I never needed a friend, like I do now
Gomenasai, I let you down, Gomenasai, Gomenasai
Gomenasai till the end, I never needed a friend
