Newsome is a village situated approximately 1 mile south of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. It is in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees. The village lies at the centre of Newsome Ward to which it gives its name.

Newsome stands on a shoulder of land below Castle Hill and above the valley where the River Holme meets the River Colne. The village lies between Berry Brow, Hall Bower and Taylor Hill.

The village has both housing and industrial units, the latter mostly within the site of the former Newsome Mill, which used to produce woollen textiles. It has a large bakehouse (which makes award winning pork pies).

There is a secondary school, Newsome High School and Sports College to the south west of the village centre; one of three secondary schools in the area governed by Kirklees to be recognised as a specialist sports college since the government's inception of the programme in 1994. The school's assistant head teacher was named West Yorkshire Teacher of the Year 2006 for an award sponsored by Pulse Radio. The Victorian infant and nursery school 'Stile Common Infant and Nursery School', close to the village centre, was closed down and replaced by newly built Hillside Primary School. A specialist school, Castle Hill school, for children aged 3 - 19, with Severe Learning Difficulties and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities is located to the south west of the village, by Berry Brow, to support children from within the Huddersfield catchment area. The Huddersfield Examiner announced on 11 July 2009 that the specialist school in Newsome had one confirmed case of swine flu.

Joanna Newsom (born January 18, 1982) is an American harpist, pianist and singer-songwriter from Nevada City, California.

Newsom grew up in the small town of Nevada City, California. As a child, Newsom was not allowed to watch television or listen to the radio because she was raised by doctors who were "kind of idealists when it came to hoping they could protect us from bad influences, like violent movies, or stupid stuff". She was exposed to music from a young age. Her father played the guitar and her mother was a classically trained pianist who played the hammered dulcimer, the autoharp and conga drums. Newsom attended a Waldorf school where she studied theater and learned to memorize and recite long poems. This skill helps her to remember lyrics while on tour.

At the age of five, Newsom asked her parents if she could play the harp. Her parents eventually agreed to sign her up for harp lessons, but the local harp teacher did not want to take on such a young student and suggested she learn to play the piano first. Starting at the age of four, she began playing the piano and later the harp, which she "loved from the first lesson onward." From her instructor, Joanna learned composition and improvisation. She learned to play on smaller Celtic harps until her parents bought her a full-size pedal harp in the seventh grade. During her teens, she and the instrument became inseparable, and she describes her relationship with the harp as similar to "an artificial limb or a wheelchair. It’s almost part of me, but more to the point, it serves a purpose, and if it wasn’t there I would wonder what was supposed to fit in its place."

Paul Newsome also known as "Spot Newsome"' is a gold selling artist originally from Oldham, Lancashire, England and living in Los Angeles. He is the guitarist/songwriter for UK rock group Proud Mary and has also recorded various scores for both film and television. He has toured extensively and played with such artists as Neil Young, David Bowie, The Who, Ryan Adams, The Black Crowes, Paul Weller, Andy Rourke (The Smiths), Ocean Colour Scene, Happy Mondays, Stereophonics and Oasis. (Proud Mary were the first signings to Noel Gallagher's Sour Mash label and Gallagher produced his first album.) Paul started his career with Manchester band The Ya Ya's who were touring buddies with a then unknown Oasis. They played their first London gigs together and continue their friendship until today. Newsome also played bass and lead guitar on The Happy Mondays' 2007 album Unkle Dysfunktional.

Recently Paul was collaborating with Robbie Williams in Los Angeles and composing for Hollywood legend producer Robert Evans. Famous for the Godfather trilogy, Love Story and Chinatown amongst others

Ozzie Newsome Jr. (born March 16, 1956 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama) is a former American football tight end for the Cleveland Browns, an inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the current General Manager of the Baltimore Ravens.

Before his NFL career, Newsome played for the University of Alabama, where he started for all 4 years of his college career. Newsome made the College Football All-America Team in 1977 and assisted the Crimson Tide to a 42 and 6 overall record during his four seasons. In total, Newsome amassed 102 receptions for 2,070 receiving yards. His 20.3 average yards per catch was a Southeast Conference record. Newsome was named the Player of the Decade for the 1970s [1]. In 1994, Newsome was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Nicknamed "The Wizard of Oz" at The University of Alabama, Newsome was the 23rd pick in the 1978 NFL Draft for the Cleveland Browns. He was named the Browns' Offensive Player of the Year his rookie year, the first time in 25 years that a rookie had received that honor. Ozzie earned All-Pro honors the following year, 1979, and again in 1984. Newsome went to the Pro Bowl in 1981, 1984 and 1985. In 1986, Newsome won the Ed Block Courage Award for playing with injuries, while in 1990 Newsome won the "Whizzer" White NFL Man of the Year Award for his community service.
