A 14-ton molasses spill has killed thousands of fish and other marine life in Honolulu Harbor, the biggest environmental disaster Hawaii has ever faced. Hundreds of suffocated sea creatures have already been collected since Monday when a pipeline running from storage tanks to Matson Navigation Co ships spilled 233,000 gallons of molasses -- enough to fill one-third of an Olympic-size pool - into the water. Health officials expect thousands more fish to die because the high concentration of the sugary, brown goo is sinking to the bottom of the ocean 'like a rock', making breathing difficult. 'This is the worst environmental damage to sea life that I have come across, and it's fair to say this is a biggie, if not the biggest that we've had to confront in the state of Hawaii,' Gary Gill, deputy director for the Environmental Health Division of the Health Department, told Hawaii News Now. The department has warned people to stay out of the area because the dead fish could attract sharks and other predators like barracuda. Diver Roger White made a seven-minute video showing the dead sea life - crabs, fish, eels and more - blanketing the bottom of the harbor. The water has turned a murky yellow-brown colour. 'There's nothing alive there at all,' he said. 'Everything is dead. They're all dead and they're all just lying across the bottom - hundreds and hundreds, thousands.' Another shark attack in Hawaii, 2nd shark attack this week, a teenage surfer's legs were bit by a shark just days after a female German tourist was attacked while snorkeling. The first shark attack happened in Maui, Hawaii while the surfer was attacked in Hilo, Hawaii. Also in Today's Wildlife news, 40 pythons were found in a motel and a black bear was caught on film after it broke into a house in Florida. Last weeks shark attack victim, the German tourist, has been identified as Jana Lutterropp. The 20 year old had her arm bitten off by an unidentified shark while snorkeling. It was a 57 year old gym teacher from California, Rick Moore, who came to her rescue putting on flippers and swam over 300 feet into the ocean after hearing her screams. Blood was all over the water when he made it out to her as he risked getting attacked himself and he brought her back to shore. On Sunday marked the 9th shark attack in Hawaii this year as 16 year old surfer, Jimmy Napeahi, suffered severe leg injuries as an 8 foot grey colored shark bit him while riding a wave just southeast of Hilo. A nearby surfer witness the attack as he saw the large shark come after Jimmy from behind. The shark attack was unusual as it came at 1:30pm, a time of day that is usually safe for surfers.
