THE MINUTEMEN Years active: 1980-1985 Formed in: San Pedro, California, USA Style: Hardcore Punk, Punk Rock, Punk Funk MYSPACE http://www.myspace.com/theminutemen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minutemen_(band) The Minutemen was an American punk rock band formed in San Pedro, California in 1980. Comprising guitarist D. Boon, bassist Mike Watt and drummer George Hurley, the Minutemen recorded four albums and eight EPs before Boon's unexpected death in December 1985. They were noted in the Californian punk rock community for a philosophy of "jamming econo": a sense of thriftiness reflected in their touring and presentation. The Minutemen were fans of Captain Beefheart, and echoes of his distinctive music can be heard in their songs, especially their early output. Through most of their career they ignored standard verse-chorus-verse song structures, in favor of experimenting with musical dynamics, rhythm and noise. Later in their career they blended in more traditional song elements they had initially avoided. They also played covers of classic rock songs by bands such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steely Dan, and Blue Öyster Cult.

Double Nickels on the Dime is the third studio album by American punk trio Minutemen, released on the Californian independent record label SST Records in 1984. A double album containing 45 songs, Double Nickels on the Dime combines elements of punk rock, funk, country, spoken word and jazz, and references a variety of themes, from the Vietnam War and racism in America, to working class experience and linguistics. After recording new material, the band each selected songs for different sides of the double album, with the fourth side named "Chaff". Several songs on Double Nickels on the Dime were outsourced to or inspired by contemporaries, such as Black Flag's Henry Rollins and Jack Brewer of Saccharine Trust. Double Nickels on the Dime is seen not only as Minutemen's crowning achievement, but, as critic Mark Deming notes, "one of the very best American rock albums of the 1980s." The album now appears on many professional lists of the all-time best rock albums, including Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Slant Magazine listed the album at #77 on its list of "Best Albums of the 1980s". Track Listing: 1. D.'s Car Jam / Anxious Mo-Fo 2. Theatre Is the Life For You 3. Vietnam 4. Cohesion 5. It's Expected I'm Gone 6. #1 Hit Song 7. Two Beads At the End 8. Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Truth 9. Don't Look Now 10. Shit from an Old Notebook 11. Nature Without Man 12. Baby Boomers Tribute "Behind the Music" The Palomino Club 1949-95 North Hollywood The Palomino Club was a music venue in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles. It opened in 1949 and was the best-known country music club in Los Angeles for decades, closing in 1995.It was called "Country Music's most important West Coast club" by the Los Angeles Times and named national Club of the Year by "Performance" touring talent trade magazine. It featured such performers as Johnny Cash, Linda Ronstadt, Buck Owens, Patsy Cline, Delaney Bramlett, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Johnny Carver, Jerry Jeff Walker, Hoyt Axton, Tanya Tucker, and Willie Nelson, and was also a popular hangout for other country entertainers such as Merle Haggard and Jerry Lee Lewis. Lewis played there at least once a year from 1957 to 1987. Elvis Presley at least once strolled in unheralded and took in a set. In the late 1980s and 1990s, the Palomino began to feature more rock acts, including many artists associated with SST Records.

Initially conceived in Richmond, Virginia in the year 2000 as an improvisational and experimental drum and trumpet duo, Plasmodium evolved into a musical theater concept incorporating found sound, looping, spoken word, and performance art. The conceit was that the group were paranormal sound investigators: Bobby Pinz and Clive Buckledown. Clairaudience is the psychic ability to receive messages in thought form from another frequency or realm and is the general concept or theme behind the group’s only release, Clairaudience. On Tuesday, December 16, a remastered version of the album will be released through worldwide digital and streaming services. Plasmodium opens Clairaudience with "This Is I.S.A.R." (Investigative Sonic Apparition Research Laboratories) and so begins a sonic journey that leads listeners through a series of sound-surveillance portraits of sonic apparitions channelled in their laboratories between 2002-2004. The concept is set against a neo-crime jazz backdrop with a dizzying array of drum loops, keyboards, electronically manipulated trumpets, hard-boiled voiceover, robot voices, and found sound. Although mainly jazzy, Clairaudience spins a dazzling range of musical fictions, from “Tristay” and its reverbed rockabilly lament to the paranoid psychedelic dirge rock of “Space Eye.” The daily indignities of hapless convenience store clerk "Clive Buckledown," recited in a deadpan, detective-story monotone over sensuous electric piano loops, recall the psycho jazz rap of MC 900 Ft. Jesus or Ken Nordine’s word-jazz monologues. In a more Cagean mode, the sound collage "Rethinking the Raven" presents echo-treated field recordings of a suburban smart guy spouting increasingly ridiculous, palsied nonsense syllables into fast-food drive-up intercoms. In "Dr. Octobongopus" a bored lounge MC introduces the stage act of a polyrhythmic, multi-armed, but basically lame bongo player in a routine that is pure deadpan surrealism. Veterans of the Virginia music scene centered around Richmond and Charlottesville, the members of Plasmodium had an interesting provenance: Miller played with the salsa orchestra Bio Ritmo, while Thomson drummed in the 80s for the Mad Max-ian, nuclear mutant hardcore outfit GWAR and spaz-psych instrumental rockers, The Alter Natives, who released several records on SST Records. The 10th anniversary reissue of Clairaudience for Electric Cowbell Records has been remastered for a more optimal listening experience. Plasmodium: Bob Miller (trumpets, flugelhorn, keyboards, sound manipulations) and Jim Thomson (drums, percussion, sound manipulations, and voice). Guest musicians: Paul Watson (Sparklehorse), Matt Heyner (No Neck Blues Band, TEST), Jon Sullivan (Jack’s Mannequin) Sounds like Spaceheads, DJ Krush and Toshinoro Kondo, Aphex Twin, Ken Nordine, Joe Frank Clairaudience track listing: 1.
