Alexander George Clare (born 14 September 1985 in Southwark, London, England) is a British singer-songwriter.^[1] His debut album, The Lateness of the Hour, was released in the UK on 11 July 2011 on Island Records^[2] and was produced by Mike Spencer and Major Lazer.^[3]

Clare adopted his current stage name, Alex Clare, in 2010, replacing Alexander G. Muertos, a pseudonym he first used whilst still at school.

Early life[link]

Clare was born in Southwark, London. He grew up listening to his father’s jazz records and was drawn to blues and soul (Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder), which eventually led to interests in drum and bass and UK garage. Though Clare took up the trumpet and drums as a youngster, he eventually placed an emphasis on guitar and songwriting, playing open mike nights with original material.^{[citation needed]}

Music career[link]

A demo earned him a deal with the Island label in the UK. His debut album, The Lateness of the Hour, produced by Mike Spencer and Major Lazer^[3] was released in July 2011. The first single from the album was "Up All Night", followed by "Too Close" and "Treading Water".

On 19 May 2011, Reggie Yates made Alex Clare's cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry" his Song of the Day.^[4] A day later, the Dutch radio station 3FM announced single "Too Close" to be the '3FM's Megahit of that week.^[5]

On 21 June 2011, Clare performed at the Queens' College, Cambridge May Ball.^[6] On 14 August 2011, Clare performed at the Summer Well festival in Buftea, Romania.

Following the disappointing performance of the album, Clare was dropped from his record contract with Universal Island in the UK.^[7]

In 2012, Clare's song "Too Close" was featured in an Internet Explorer 9 commercial.^[8] Following its use in the commercial, the song debuted at #68 on the US Billboard Hot 100^[9] Clare saw success on the German charts too, topping the charts at #1. On 16 May, Clare's song peaked at #4 on the UK Singles Chart.^[10]

Personal life[link]

Clare is a practicing Shomer Shabbat Jew, refusing to perform, travel or work on the Jewish Sabbath or religious Holidays. He lives in Golders Green, North London but often travels to Jerusalem when his work permits.

Before gaining critical success, Clare dated singer Amy Winehouse for a year. They met while he performed and worked at a bar she frequented, The Hawley Arms in Camden, North London.^[11]

Marty Morrissey is a commentator and with the sports department of Ireland's national broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ).^[1]

Morrissey was born in Mallow, County Cork (where his mother hailed from) but the family returned to their then home of the Bronx, New York shortly afterwards. When he was aged 11, the family returned to Ireland to his father's native home of Clare. Later, Marty went on to study at University College Cork (UCC) in Cork and spent some years teaching.

Morrissey entered the world of broadcasting on joining the (since defunct) local TV annel of the then Cork Multi-Channel TV in 1988. In 1989 he joined the new Clare FM local radio station as News Editor. In 1990, he returned to Cork to work on RTÉ's (also since defunct) local radio service in Cork prior to working with RTÉ at national level.

Morrissey has commentated on many sporting events but his bailiwick is Gaelic games.^[2] He also has a job as sports reporter and reader on RTE News. He also presents Saturday Sport on RTÉ Radio 1. He was a ring announcer and interviewer on Pro Box Live. His catchphrase us "Are you ready to rock".

He is a former teacher at St Joseph's Secondary School, Spanish Point.

In May 2011, he started presenting new RTÉ Two sports programme The Committee Room for the summer Gaelic Athletic Association season.^[3]

In May 2012, it was announced that Morrissey would present a new GAA programme called Championship Matters for the Gaelic Athletic Association season.^[4]

Clare Rita Mary Maguire (born 15 September 1987) is a British singer-songwriter. She was signed to Universal Music Group Polydor Records in 2008. She was rated in fifth place in the BBC Sound of 2011 list of the top 15 most promising new artists.^[2] Maguire was also singled out as one of MTV's Brand New: For 2011 Acts.^[3] Her voice has been compared to Stevie Nicks and Annie Lennox.^[4]

When she was 17, Maguire began travelling regularly to London to establish music contacts and also began posting demo songs on MySpace. One of these tracks, Strangest Thing, recorded with Joe Flory (Primary 1) approached 500,000 plays,^[5] leading to interest from a number of major recording companies. Maguire was also invited to Jay-Z's restaurant to meet the American rapper and millionaire businessman^[6] and other well established recording artists, including Jarvis Cocker, who was impressed and offered her one of his songs.^[5] Maguire signed a recording contract with Polydor Records in 2008 and then worked on her debut album Light After Dark with producer Fraser T. Smith, who has previously worked with Kylie and Adele.^[2]

Maguire began a European concert tour in October 2010 supporting Plan B and Hurts.^[7] She has also written a song with fellow Birmingham rap artist Mike Skinner entitled Lock the Locks which will feature on his last Streets album, Computers and Blues.^[8] Maguire also features on the track Midnight Caller which appears on Drum and Bass-duo Chase & Status' second studio album, No More Idols.

Maguire released her debut single Ain't Nobody in the United Kingdom on 18 October 2010 through Polydor Records, where it debuted at number 78 on the UK Singles Chart. A remix of the song was used in Renault's 2011 Clio commercial entitled "What is Va Va Voom?".^[9] Maguire's song You're Electric was selected as the iTunes single of the week and was available for a free digital download from 28 December until 3 January 2011.^[10] The song also appears on Light After Dark, but was released as part of an iTunes-exclusive EP entitled Let's Begin. In March 2011, Maguire began supporting The Script in their UK tour.^{[citation needed]}

On 31 December 2010, the song Lucky appeared as another free promotional download on Amazon. She then released her second official single, The Last Dance. The single was said to have been written by Maguire the day after the death of music legend Michael Jackson in response to a series of unjustified comments. The official video that accompanied the single was first premiered by The Sun on 7 January 2011 and was directed by AlexandLiane.^[11] The song was 4Music and TheBox's 'VIP Track of the week' and was also 'Record Of The Week' for BBC Radio 1 DJs Fearne Cotton and Dev. BBC Radio 1 added the song to the B-List on its playlist.^{[citation needed]}

Light After Dark went in at Number 7 in the official UK top 100 album chart (refer to previous link). The album was released on the 20th February 2011. The last single to be released off the album was 'The Shield & The Sword'. It peaked at #91 on the UK Music charts.

[edit] 2011-present: Second Studio Album

During 2011, Maguire has been working with various songwriters and producers for the second album. During her debut headline tour, she premiered new song titled 'Mess You Around'. She has also premiered 2 new songs during festivals over the summer of 2011, titled 'A Change In Me' and 'Lights Out'. Maguire has described the second album as more of a "bluesy/soul record" with influences from Johnny Cash among others.

She features on Welsh DJ, High Contrast's song 'Almost Human' taken from his upcoming album. It is a different direction for Maguire, portraying a more drum and bass sound.

In an interview in March 2012, Maguire said of the new album, "With this album I’ve taken a lot of inspiration through my own experiences and people I’ve met. It’s edgy and raw which suits my voice. It’s honest and quite funny as well. There wasn’t any humour in my first record and that annoyed me because I like to be around people who make me laugh. In terms of genre, I guess it comes under soul." It was also stated in this interview that the album is set for release in January 2013.

Born in Solihull,^[12] on 15 September 1987,^[13] Maguire comes from a large musical Irish family, the middle child of three born to Caroline (née Deehan) and Francis Maguire Sr.^[14] and started singing and writing music from the age of 7.^[15] She went to school at the independent all-girls school, Saint Martin's. She includes among her significant influences Johnny Cash, Prince, Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac and Sister Rosetta Tharpe,^[2] the pioneering 1940s gospel singer, songwriter and recording artist who popularised mixing spiritual lyrics with rock and roll accompaniment.^[16]

Maguire has supported Hurts and Plan B tours in the past, and was supporting The Script, 17–29 March 2011, as part of their Science & Faith Tour. On 3 February 2011 Maguire announced details of a UK and Ireland tour, set for March and April.^[17]

Clare Daly (born April 1968) is an Irish Socialist Party politician and a trade unionist.^[1] She was elected as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin North constituency at the 2011 general election.^[2] She was previously a Socialist Party councillor for the Swords electoral area on Fingal County Council.

Early life[link]

Daly was born in Kildare and educated at Dublin City University. She was twice elected president of the Students' Union and was prominent in the students' movement campaign for abortion rights and information. Daly was elected to Labour's Administrative Committee as a youth representative. She was expelled from the Labour Party in 1989 alongside Joe Higgins TD and other supporters of the Militant Tendency.

Local politics[link]

On 19 September 2003, Daly was jailed alongside 21 others from the Anti-Bin Tax Campaign for breaching a High Court order preventing protests leading to obstruction of the council's non-collection policy for those not paying bin charges.^[3][4] She is a former SIPTU Shop Steward in Aer Lingus and was also an organiser of the Anti-Water charges campaign in Swords in the mid 1990s.

Daly was elected as a Councillor on Fingal County Council for the Swords area in 1999. She was re-elected at 2004 local elections and 2009 local elections, topping the poll on each occasion.

Dáil Éireann[link]

She first contested the 1997 general election, receiving 7.2% on that occasion and 8.2% at the by-election later in the year. At the 2002 general election she received 5,501 votes (12.5%), narrowly missing a seat. At the 2007 general election, she received 9% of the vote.

Daly was elected to Dáil Éireann at the 2011 general election taking 15.2% of the first preference vote.^[5][6] She committed to facilitating the nomination of Senator David Norris for a place on the ballot paper ahead of the Irish presidential election, 2011.^[7]

She announced that she would not register to pay a new household charge brought in as part of the latest austerity budget, calling it "reprehensible", and telling Phil Hogan, the minister responsible, in the Dáil: "You can't bring everyone to court".^[8][9]

In February 2012, a Socialist Party spokesperson told the Irish Independent to mind its own business when asked if she had private health insurance.^[10]

In February 2012 it was reported that she would introduce a bill to provide for limited access to abortion where there is “real and substantial risk to the life” of the pregnant woman, in line with the X Case. The bill was defeated before its second reading on 19 April 2012.^[11]
