Samuel Cook (January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964), known professionally as Sam Cooke, was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur.
Influential as both a singer and composer, he is commonly known as the King of Soul for his distinctive vocals and importance within popular music. His pioneering contributions to soul music contributed to the rise of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Billy Preston, and popularized the likes of Otis Redding and James Brown.AllMusic biographer Bruce Eder wrote that Cooke was "the inventor of soul music", and possessed "an incredible natural singing voice and a smooth, effortless delivery that has never been surpassed".
Cooke had 30 U.S. top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, plus three more posthumously. Major hits like "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Cupid", "Chain Gang", "Wonderful World", and "Twistin' the Night Away" are some of his most popular songs. Cooke was also among the first modern black performers and composers to attend to the business side of his musical career. He founded both a record label and a publishing company as an extension of his careers as a singer and composer. He also took an active part in the civil rights movement.
Bill Bailey (born Mark Bailey; 13 January 1965) is an English comedian, musician, actor, TV and radio presenter and author. Bailey is well known for his role in Black Books and for his appearances on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Have I Got News for You, and QI as well as his extensive stand-up work.
Bailey was listed by the Observer as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy in 2003. In 2007 and again in 2010, he was voted the 7th greatest stand-up comic on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Stand-Ups.
Bailey was born in Bath, Somerset, and spent most of his childhood in Keynsham, a town situated between Bath and Bristol in the West of England. His father was a medical practitioner and his mother was a hospital ward sister. His maternal grandparents lived in an annexe, built on the side of the house by his maternal grandfather who was a stonemason and builder. Two rooms at the front of the family house were for his father's surgery.
Bailey was educated at King Edward's School, an independent school in Bath where he was initially a highly academic pupil winning most of the prizes. At about the age of 15, he started to become distracted from school work when he realised the thrill of performance as a member of a school band called Behind Closed Doors, which played mostly original work. He was the only pupil at his school to study A-level music and he passed with an A grade. He also claims to have been good at sport (captain of KES 2nd XI cricket team 1982), which often surprised his teachers. He would often combine music and sport by leading the singing on the long coach trip back from away rugby fixtures. It was here that he was given his nickname Bill by his music teacher, Ian Phipps, for being able to play the song "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey" so well on the guitar.
Sam Cooke was quite simply put, "The Man Who Invented Soul". His voice, phrasing and style would go on to influence a generation of singers in the genres of rock, pop and soul. His influence is evident when listening to artists/fans from the likes of Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding to Rod Stewart, Terence Trent D'arby and Guy Sebastian. This was an exquisite recording from Sam Cooke Live at the Copa performing a medley of songs, namely Try a Little Tenderness, (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons and You Send Me. I would also highly recommend listening to Sam's gospel music from the Soul Stirrers era. His first five gospel recordings define soul music as we know it today. Follow the past 50 years of Rock n' Roll as if it is happening today at www.pigcityrecords.com Record Review of Sam Cooke's 1957 self titled debut LP from Pig City Records If you had your hands on the wheel you'd realise the road is wrapping around the edges in front of us, but you like the way the wheel is turning itself. We've both agreed that 'gay paris' is sometimes relevant but that neither of us would ever say it. White leather interiors and aqua exteriors up on the cliffs above the ocean, it's a convertible and that's even okay, 'Danny Boy' is playing now and that's even okay cause Sam Cooke is singing it. You could even throw your hands up or let some kind of long scarf out into the breeze and I wouldn't hate you for it. My shirt's open to the world and I don't hate myself fo...

Mary: I gotta change shoes. Mary: Okay, there we go. Now, that’s so much better. Stuart: Ladies and gentlemen, obviously, let’s begin at the beginning. Normally, the protocol is that we give people a round of applause at the end of the event. In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on. [applause] Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick q...

During the late 1960’s Jazz music was undergoing a major metamorphosis. Miles Davis was musically in transition and went from the traditional acoustic quartet to a more funky electronic sound. Out went the stand-up bass and came the electronic bass. Out with the standard piano and came the Fender Rhodes. Many musicians in what would be hailed as Fusion jazz phase, took rock, soul, and other free form elements and centered it with an electronic base. Musicians like Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Les McCann, Herbie Hancock, and Stevie Wonder used the Fender Rhodes as not a replacement to the standard piano, but as a means to create and experimental sound to evolve with the new music that took the world by storm. Pianist and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith is a pioneer in the fusion jazz/funk whe...

A long-time fixture in the garage-rock scene since fronting infamous Montreal punk band, The Spaceshits. Further projects like Les Sexareenos, BBQ, Mind Controls, The King Khan & BBQ Show and The Almighty Defenders helped spearhead the modern garage-rock and doo-wop movement. These days he is best known as the 'BBQ' half of The King Khan & BBQ Show or as a member of The Almighty Defenders. He often shirks recognition and credit but make no mistake, he is THE VOICE. A hitmaker. And it's a pleasure to announce his second album under his given name, $. Mark has toured from North America through South America to Japan to Israel to Africa...
Abstract What moves us to action? Through this sound scape project we will explore music’s influence on social movements/events in the U.S. and abroad during times of war and peace (ie. The Civil Rights Movement, Apartheid, Occupy Wall Street and Nigeria, The L.A. Riots, Arab Spring, and anti-war movement of the Vietnam War). Think about what movements in history have caused/pushed all people to act no matter their race, religion, age, and/or class? What did music do for these movements and for the people that sacrificed their lives for change? Descriptive Summary This is an exploration of music’s role in driving social movements. With Occupy Wall Street right next door to the students at The New School I wanted to understand why more people and myself in general had not gotten involve...
We had the privilege to catch up with the up and coming Jacob McCaslin at his family home in Issaquah, Seattle. While only 19 years old and never taken any music lessons, McCaslin is currently studying for a degree in Music Production at Berklee College in Boston. His Debut EP, ‘Cautionary Tales’ recently dropped– whispering essences of John Mayer, Alicia Keys, and Sam Cooke. “It will be available exclusively at http://jacobmccaslin.bandcamp.com. It will be my first official album, and features the best songs I have written over the last four years. It is, without a doubt, the best work I have published to date.” – Jacob McCaslin on his 2013 Album Cautionary Tales. To see more about Jacob and other artists go to http://freshindependence.com
Upon applying to an internship position at Hootsuite, I was asked to summarize what makes me unique in less than 150 characters. Of course, with my long and decorated history of writing theme songs for social-tech companies, the natural response was to make the staff aware of how I could bring this creative talent to the Hootsuite team. After passing the first-round phone interview, I decided to make good on my promise and deliver a catchy little ditty. The result is this video. I can't take full credit for the song. The melody belongs to a personal favorite: Sam Cooke's 'Cupid.'
Organist Joey DeFrancesco performed music with his new quartet, The People, recently at the famed Birdland Jazz Club in New York City. Joey DeFrancesco & The People's upcoming Mack Avenue Records release "Project Freedom" features Joey on organ, keyboards, and trumpet, Jason Brown on drums, Troy Roberts on saxophones, and Dan Wilson on guitar. The group covers standards such as Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Every Voice and Sing." In this special edition of The Pace Report, I had the honor of sitting down with Joey and members of The People to discuss the new CD, how they've meshed musically, and why Joey decided to switch from the traditional trio setting to a quartet. Joey DeFrancesco & The People's debut recording "Project Freedom" will be availa...

Julien "Jules" Koetsch joins Keith Vincent, John Holt, and Mary Varn to discuss the next two picks from our "Better than the Original" theme. ___________ Segment 1: "Blowin' in the Wind" by Sam Cooke (1964) is better than "Blowin' in the Wind" by Bob Dylan (1963) Keith (earthlingkeith.com) contends that Sam Cooke's live rendition of "Blowin' in the Wind," from Sam Cooke at the Copa is better than Bob Dylan's original version off of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. The Peter, Paul and Mary version is the most financially successful of the time, and Dylan's is the most well known now. Cooke's Copa was one of his last releases while alive, he died later in the same year, 1964. Sam Cooke's album is also available on iTunes, Rdio, Spotify. As wel...
How many roads must a man walk down
Before he's called a man
Tell me, how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Tell me, how many times must the cannonballs fly
Before they're forever banned?
No, the answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer: blowin' in the wind
How many times must a man look above
Before he sees the sky
Tell me, how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry
What I wanna know is
How many deaths will it take 'til he knows
Too many people have died
Oh, the
No, the answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer: somewhere in the the wind
How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed out to the sea
Tell me, how many years can people exist
Before they are allowed to be free
How many times can a man turn his head
Pretending that he just doesn't see
Oh, the answer, my friend, blowin' in whe wind
The answer: blowin' in the wind
Blowin' in the wind, blowin' in the wind
The answer: somewhere in the wind
That answer is somewhere in the wind
