Jen Shyu - Pansori -Simcheongga- @ CPI National Gugak Center concert (판소리 심청가 중 범피중류 & 심봉사 눈 드는 대목)
Pansori - Simcheongga "Drifting Along In the Sea" and "Simbongsa Opens His Eyes" (판소리 심청가 중 범피중류 & 심봉사 눈 드는 대목) November 8, 2013, 4:00pm @ National Gugak Center, Umyeondang, Seoul (2013년11월8일@국립국악원, 우면당) Jen Shyu, Pansori (젠슈, 판소리) Kwon Song-Hee, Gosu (soribuk) and Shyu's Seopyeonje Pansori teacher (권송희, 고수 -소리북- & 젠슈의 서편제 선생님) This excerpt is from a final presentation given by the three 2013 CPI fellowship recipients sponsored by the National Gugak Center in Seoul, South Korea. After just five months of study, we presented some of our own music as well as what we learned in Korea during this June to November six-month program (Thithipol Kanteewong from Thailand played haegeum and janggu; Li Kun from China played piri; and I performed Gayageum Byeongchang in addition to Pansori from Simcheongga.) The scenes sung here are from "Drifting Along In the Sea" (범피중류) when Simcheong kills herself by jumping into the water in order to regain her father's sight and "Simbongsa Opens His Eyes" (심봉사 눈 드는 대목) when her father regains his sight. Special thanks to Ploy Song who made this video, my Seopyeonje teacher Kwon Song-Hee, my Dongpyeonje teacher Bae Il Dong, my Gayageum Byeongchang teacher Ha Kyung Mee, my gayageum byeongchang Gosu Woo Min Young, my soribuk teacher Sim Woonjung, our incredible CPI coordinator Lee Baewon, my fellow CPI Gugak Center colleagues Thithipol Kanteewong and Li Kun, Kim Dong-Won who helped me early on with translation and understanding of Pansori and Korean music in general, Ha Ju-Yong who shared his research on Pansori with me and also told me about Kim Yejin 김예진 who gave me my first three pansori lessons, Kim Sumi who invited me to my first Pansori Mountain Study (산공부), my Korean sister and invaluable friend and daegeum artist Cha Seungmin, geomungo master Heo Yoon-Jeong who gave me many opportunities to share my music in Korea, the wonderful CPI and local Korean and foreign friends I've been blessed to meet in Korea, and of course the National Gugak Center and the CPI (Cultural Partnership Initiative) program whose vision and generosity for allowing all of this to happen will never be forgotten. --November 10, 2013- published: 10 Nov 2013

Jen Shyu, Mike Allemana, Matt Ferguson, & Eric Montzka at Von Freeman's Session Dec 21, 2010)
In memory....December 21, 2010, a moment at one of Von Freeman's legendary New Apartment Lounge Tuesday night sessions: Jen Shyu, vocals Mike Allemana, guitar Matt Ferguson, bass Eric Montzka, drums (usual drummer was Michael Raynor, who was out of town that night) Photos by Joan Vandermeulen Chicago, Illinois, USA I first heard Von's name and music from Steve Coleman, and dove in immediately. Over the years, I went as often as I could to Chicago to hear him play and hang on his words of wisdom in our conversations at the back of the bar. Von was a dear friend and powerful yet gentle hero to so many of us. He will live eternally in our memories and in his music, which penetrated so deeply, through his way of being. "You have the answer. Learn to translate it." --Von Freeman (October 3, 1923 - August 11, 2012) NEA Jazz Master: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CA6U5meqm4- published: 28 Aug 2013
