Haviz, Lake Balaton, Hungary, Unravel Travel TV
Outside Budapest the capital of Hungary the second biggest tourist attraction is Lake Balaton. During the summer months thousands of holiday makers come here and base themselves in one of the pretty town or resorts along the lake. The lake stretches along for 80 kilometres and it can take between one and two hours drive from Budapest, depending what part of the lake you chose to visit.
Given the great whether many are tempted to cycle around the lake a bicycle track was recently completed allowing cyclists to bike 200 kilometres
Heviz is a town in the north western part of Lake Bolaton is ideal for anyone who wants to get fit and healthy on holiday with its array of hotels and thermal lake. Where ever you travel in Hungary you are never far from a thermal spring behind me is lake bas and its THE LARGEST THERMAL LAKE IN THE WORLD. People come to this lake every day to help cure conditions like arthritis sorrices or else for just pure relaxation. Its busiest day last year saw 8000 people dip their toes in its sulphuric waters
Festetics Palace is located in Kestely near Lake Balaton it was intended as a country house for members of the Festetics family. Its construction, started by Kristóf Festetics in 1745, lasted more than a century, and it has since trippled in size.
The Baroque-style palace now houses the Helikon Castle Museum, it also hosts concerts and events, and is surrounded by beautifully kept grounds. The palace is visited by 200,000 people every year the great book collection that remains in the castle is the only extensive aristocratic library that survives in Hungary. The Palace also boasts an impressive coach- house with coaches of all sizes, shapes and decorated in an array of styles.

Hungary - Balaton
Nobody quite knows who first declared themselves in love with Lake Balaton. Perhaps a poet, or a traveler, but it's a fact that from the start of the 19th Century onwards, more and more statements like this are recorded. First in beautiful prose, then in newspaper articles, nowadays in virtually everyday speech. For those who haven't been yet it is hard to understand the attraction to Lake Balaton. If we want to educate them, then for every question there is an answer.

Tihany and Balatonfuhred, Lake Balaton, Hungary - Unravel Travel TV
Wine is an integral part of Hungarys culture.Whether your preference is red or white, you can be sure to drink well as their wines range from delicious Reislings to full bodied reds.
Tihany is a gem of not only Lake Balaton but Hungary itself, one that offers interesting sights in every season. Its major attractions are the historical and cultural memories connected to the abbey. Legend has it that if you make a wish while looking out the abbey window your dreams will come through. There is also spectacular natural surroundings combined with the recreational by the lake.
The oldest part of Lake Balaton is Balatonfuhred. While I expected this to be the old-fashioned , it was quite the opposite. Swanky hotels and cafes like Karolinas flank the lake front catering to a visitor who likes their luxury on holiday.
Balatonfuhred is also a haven for those who like to spend their days cruising, after a day on the lake they can moor their yachts at the exclusive marina before enjoying the social surroundings of Balatonfuhred..

Balaton 2012
Lake Balaton is a freshwater lake in the Transdanubian region of Hungary. It is the largest lake in Central Europe, and one of its foremost tourist destinations. As Hungary is landlocked, Lake Balaton is often called the "Hungarian Sea". The Zala River provides the largest inflow of water to the lake, and the canalized Sió is the only outflow.
The mountainous region of the northern shore is known both for its historic character and as a major wine region, while the flat southern shore is known for its resort towns. Balatonfüred and Hévíz developed early as resorts for the wealthy, but it wasn't until the late 19th century that landowners, their vines destroyed by lice, began building summer homes to rent out to the burgeoning middle classes.

85 Lake Balaton · Hungary
We have selected 100 unique places on Earth that are projected to
undergo profound changes within the next few generations.
We based our selection of the 100 places on the 4th Assessment
Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Simply by drawing attention to the beauty of these places, 100 Places to
Remember Before they Disappear creates an argument to preserve
them.
The 100 Places we have chosen to highlight, and the people who
live in them, are in serious danger because of rising sea levels, rising
temperatures and extreme weather events triggered by climate change.
Among ambassadors are Joss Stone, Desmond Tutu for more info visit http://www.100places.com -
Lake Balaton · Hungary
The Shallow Waters of the Hungarian Sea
Popularly called The Hungarian Sea, Lake Balaton is the largest lake in central Europe. Famous for its shallow waters, this natural treasure stretches 77 km between the low volcanic hills of western Hungary. Its average depth is just three metres, and its name derives from the Slavic balaton, meaning muddy lake.
Two thousand years ago, the Romans named it Lacus Pelso, or shallow lake. It was the Romans who first produced wine in Hungary, establishing vineyards on the volcanic hillsides where the grapes receive twice the amount of sunlight thanks to the reflection of the suns rays on the lake.
In the late 1800s, Lake Balaton became a popular summer retreat for the elite of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who came to enjoy its 600 square kilometres of warm water, picturesque villages and sloping vineyards. After World War II, when East Germans were restricted in their movements, it became a favourite location for meetings with family and friends from West Germany.
Since the downfall of the communist regimes in Eastern Europe 20 years ago, Lake Balaton has been a popular holiday resort for millions of tourists from all over Europe, giving the local economy a tremendous boost.
Rainfall decreased and temperatures rose substantially for four successive summers from 2000 until 2003. The famous lake began to shrink and the water level dropped even further than usual. Large muddy banks began to appear 100 metres offshore.
In summer 2003, temperatures were 4°C above average. Scientists believe this is an early warning of climate change, indicating the sort of effects we can expect global warming to have later this century.
With summer precipitation projected to decrease by 30-70% in Central Europe, and temperatures expected to be substantially higher, the region around Lake Balaton could experience a 50% increase in heatwaves and drought by the end of the century. This would dry up much of the lake and threaten the historic vineyards.

Dancing on the Lake Balaton / Tanz am See

LAKE BALATON Hungary
Lake Balaton is Europe's largest lake that is shallow and available for bathing. During the summer, the temperature of its water can reach 28-29 degrees, however it is not only a paradise for swimmers, yachtsmen and surfers, but also for anglers. The Southern coast of the 77 kilometers long lake is encompassed by the Somogy hills, while the Northern coast is circled by the vineyards situated on the previously vulcanic hills, called the Balaton Highlands, which reach until the Bakony Hills. The landscape amazes the visitor with its unique beauty and diversity. The past comes alive in castles and forts, temples, monastery ruins, mansions of noble families, old peasant houses, thatched roofed winecellars, and old bridges and watermills.
