The Lombards
The Lombards
The Lombards or Langobards (Latin: Langobardī, Italian Longobardi), were a Germanic tribe who ruled a Kingdom in Italy from 568 to 774. The Lombard historian Paul the Deacon wrote in the Historia Langobardorum that the Lombards descended from a small tribe called the Winnili[1] who dwelt in southern Scandinavia[2] (Scadanan) before migrating to seek new lands. In the 1st century AD they formed part of the Suebi, in northwestern Germany. By the end of the 5th century they had moved into the area roughly coinciding with modern Austria north of the Danube river, where they subdued the Heruls and later fought frequent wars with the Gepids. The Lombard king Audoin defeated the Gepid leader Thurisind in 551 or 552; his successor Alboin eventually destroyed the Gepids at the Battle of Asfeld in 567. Following this victory, Alboin decided to lead his people to Italy, which had become severely depopulated after the long Gothic War (535--554) between the Byzantine Empire and the Ostrogothic Kingdom there. The Lombards were joined by numerous Saxons, Heruls, Gepids, Bulgars, Thuringians, and Ostrogoths, and their invasion of Italy was almost unopposed. By late 569 they had conquered all the principal cities north of the Po River except Pavia, which fell in 572. At the same time, they occupied areas in central and southern Italy. They established a Lombard Kingdom in Italy, later named Regnum Italicum ("Kingdom of Italy"), which reached its zenith under the 8th-century ruler Liutprand. In 774, the Kingdom was conquered by the Frankish King Charlemagne and integrated into his Empire. However, Lombard nobles continued to rule parts of the Italian peninsula well into the 11th century when they were conquered by the Normans and added to their County of Sicily. Their legacy is apparent in the regional appellation, Lombardy.- published: 05 Nov 2013

The country's capital and largest city is Budapest. Hungary is a member of the European Union, NATO, the OECD, the Visegrád Group, and the Schengen Agreement. The official language is Hungarian which is the most populous non-Indo-European language in Europe.[8] Following periods of successive habitation by Celts, Romans, Huns, Slavs, Gepids, and Avars, the foundation of Hungary was laid in the late 9th century by the Hungarian grand prince Árpád. His great-grandson Saint Stephen I ascended to the throne in 1000 AD, converting the country to a Christian kingdom. The Kingdom of Hungary existed for 946 years and at various points was regarded as one of the cultural centers of the Western world.[9] After the Battle of Mohács and about 150 years of partial Ottoman occupation (1541--1699), Hungary became part of the Habsburg Empire, and later formed part of the Austro--Hungarian Empire (1867--1918). Hungary's modern borders were first established by the Treaty of Trianon (1920) after World War I. The country lost more than 71% of its territory, 58% of its population, and 32% of the Hungarians. On the side of the Axis Powers, Hungary also suffered great damages in World War II. During its four decades long communist dictatorship (1947--1989), the country gained widespread international attention regarding the Revolution of 1956 and the seminal opening of its border with Austria in 1989, previously restricted by the Iron Curtain, which accelerated the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. On 23 October 1989, Hungary again became a democratic parliamentary republic, and now it is a developed country. Hungary is a popular tourist destination attracting 10.2 million tourists a year (2011).[10] The country is home to the largest thermal water cave system[11] and the second largest thermal lake in the world (Lake Hévíz), the largest lake in Central Europe (Lake Balaton), and the largest natural grasslands in Europe (Hortobágy). Rome Total War Barbarian Invasion - 52 (Very Hard). Гепиды
Rome Total War Barbarian Invasion - 52 (Very Hard).
