Ideas 2014: Arun Shourie talks about good governance, UPA's failures
In a special CNN-IBN series on Ideas 2014, Deputy Editor Sagarika Ghose speaks to former minister in the Vajpayee government Arun Shourie on the issue of good governance which is the buzz word ahead of 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Shourie says, "Good governance means improvement in delivery of services, expeditious implementation of project, revival of investment climate." He adds that the biggest failure of UPA was "Manmohan Singh took away from India the sense of possibility."- published: 07 Jan 2014

Governance of natural resources: Social Network Analysis and good governance indicators - Dance Your Ph.D.
My Phd research (done at the University of Padua, thanks to the supervision of prof. dr. Laura Secco) tries to develop a methodology for the evaluation of good local governance of natural resources in rural areas, and in particular it focuses mainly on three aspects: i) the definition of the concept of ‘good governance’ of natural resources at local level in rural areas, through the division of this huge term in key-dimensions and more concrete sub-dimensions; ii) the creation of a simple and expeditious set of indicators to be applied at local level to measure the good governance generated by the assessed organization; iii) the use of suitable instruments for the work, and special attention is given to social network analysis for the study of networks among local stakeholders.
In shooting the video, I focused my attention on three keywords: governance – indicators – network (as you can tell by our homemade soundtrack!).
The dance tries to explain these keywords: local stakeholders benefit from the use of natural resources, but if not well managed by a local organization/institution their impact becomes negative; it is necessary to create links among the main stakeholders, both public and private (which are here divided in 7 categories), through good governance on a local scale; the created network allows more harmonic dialogue, but an assessment (or self-assessment) is required through suitable indicators.
My special thanks go to all my friends and colleagues who contributed to the project: the whole work involved 24 people (plus enthusiastic supporters)!! Enrico suggested I take part in the contest; Giulio and Mut created with me the dynamic of dances, and did the shooting; Lorenzo Dalloz Valeria and part of the Yamà band (Lucio, Giulio, Francesca and Roland) wrote the music; Sara and Mut helped me chose the park setting; Chicca designed the tree faces and Eva coordinated the costumes research; Lorenzo Lucia Mauro Linda Giacomo Livio Lucio transformed themselves in perfect anthropomorphic trees; Francesca Chicca Serena Elena Tommi Susi Emma Eva and Marianna danced with me; and Giulio worked hard to help me produce the final video!

Midnight Moment: "1st Amendment (Excerpts)" - Andrew Sloat
TIMES SQUARE ARTS, TSAC & AIGA/NY PRESENT OCTOBER’S MIDNIGHT MOMENT
The AIGA/NY invited a select group of New York designers to submit videos for October’s Midnight Moment. Midnight Moment is the largest coordinated effort in history by the sign operators in Times Square to display synchronized, cutting-edge creative content on electronic billboards and newspaper kiosks throughout Times Square every night.
Times Square exists because our rights of free speech and assembly are broadly defined and protected. This video celebrates the simple words that make this amazing place possible, using a few of the basic elements that Times Square is made of: color, words, and movement.
Andrew Sloat is a graphic designer and filmmaker. He makes books, identities, educational videos, ads, and websites for non-profits, cultural institutions, and corporate clients. He lives and works in Brooklyn, completed his graduate work in graphic design at Yale, teaches in the graphic design MFA program at RISD, and is active in local and state-level good-government activism.

Build a Better Bridge: Why the Hudson Valley Wants Transit on the Tappan Zee
New York State is on the verge of one of the largest transportation projects in the nation - the replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge. Hudson Valley residents, business owners, elected officials and environmental advocates participated in the State DOT’s ten-year, 280 meeting planning process. Through these meetings and millions of dollars of State studies, a consensus emerged that transit was a vital component of the Tappan Zee Bridge project.
According to the State’s own documents “Without major transit investments, already unacceptable levels of congestion are forecasted to occur in the corridor far into the future.”
In the fall of 2011 Governor Cuomo reversed course, deciding that the bridge project would move forward without transit. The State now proposes to build a $5 billion bridge that is twice as wide as the current bridge and provides no relief to the increasing traffic congestion that threatens to constrain the region’s growth and diminish quality of life in the villages and towns along the I-287 corridor.
Local leaders are joined by over 20 environmental, good government and labor groups in calling on Governor Cuomo to put transit back into the Tappan Zee Bridge project. This video shows how they are fighting for this once in a lifetime opportunity to relieve congestion in the I-287 corridor and local roads, improve air quality, achieve sustainability goals, and reduce motorist travel time.
The state is accepting public comment on its Tappan Zee DEIS until March 15th. You can find more information on upcoming public hearings on this project and to tell the Governor to put transit back into the project at www.brtonthebridge.org.

The Tiger Skin Trail
Saving the wild tiger is not just about saving a species. It is about securing a long-term future for tigers, the forests they live in and the people who depend on those forests for their survival. It is about good governance and overcoming corruption. If we can’t save the wild tiger, what can we save?

Combating Poverty, Foreign Aid, Good Governance and Economic Growth
Daniel Runde argues that, as developing countries continue to democratize and improve their governance, foreign aid donors should shift their focus from meeting basic needs to broader institutional development.Drawing on his new CSIS report Combating Global Poverty: Investing in the Governance and Growth Nexus, he contends that the best way to continue to reduce global poverty is to focus on improving the rule of law and economic performance at the country level. The panel discusses what this means for the post-2015 development agenda and how foreign aid donors should programme resources and assistance in the future.- published: 09 Dec 2013
