HAVE YOUR SAY: Just not what an Ormond doctor ordered

Dr Federica Lamech says she has been left debilitated by health effects associated with smart metres in her Ormond street.

Dr Federica Lamech says she has been left debilitated by health effects associated with smart metres in her Ormond street.

AN Ormond doctor has had her home painted with electromagnetic shielding paint because she says smart meters in her street are making her ill.

Federica Lamech said she could not work due to debilitating health problems caused by smart meters - even through she did not have one in her own home.

Dr Lamech said she had suffered continuous palpitations, chest pain, lethargy, dizziness, fainting and insomnia since the meters were rolled out in her area in February.

“I am not able to function,” Dr Lamech said.

YShield Electromagnetic Radiation Shielding general manager David Mould said it had painted hundreds of houses since the smart meter rollout began.

“We’ve done four houses this week, in Ormond, East Bentleigh and St Kilda,” Mr Mould said last week.

“Demand is so high we’re having to book jobs weeks in advance.”

She has taken sick leave from her Aspendale Gardens GP practice.

“I can’t work, I can’t look after my family and I need my husband, now the only breadwinner, to take care of me,” Dr Lamech said.

Stop Smart Meters Australia spokesman Marc Florio demanded the State Government follow the lead of the UK Government, which was reportedly planning to make smart meters voluntary.

Government spokeswoman Emily Broadbent said the meters were safe and their radiofrequency emissions were weaker than many other household devices.

Ms Broadbent said the World Health Organisation determined electromagnetic hypersensitivity was not a medical diagnosis.

Dr. Lamech, you are brave! Thanks for your expression of honesty. You are one of very few who can feel this as they move through neighborhoods. My house is ruined. It's paid off, yet I'm sleep in a motel room just so I can get some sleep -- Guess what I pay for that? Just so I can pack up my house and get out of here. How crazy is this? What a waste. You're not alone, I'm super sensitive but no one I know understands this. It's very isolating.

Whether or not you believe the evidence for or against the case of health and smart meters, the fact that as a society we are being forced to have a device in our home that some us do not wish to have me included this sets a precedent to the freedom of choice of all citizens of Victoria, we are being dictated too that this is what you shall have and you have no option, if any citizen feels that this device will or is making them unwell they should have the right to say no, this is supposed to be a Democracy. If we allow the Government and power companies to dictate to people what shall happen at their own homes then I think we should all be worried about what other future plans that may be forced on people. instead of arguing about the situation we should be admiring people trying to stand up for their own human rights.

My Family and I have suffered inexplicably since our smart metre was installed, and we believe that smart metres are going to be the death of society as they are pushing all the WiFi levels over the edge. You can't impose smart meters on a community without them being able to reject it. It's a disgrace. People should be marching in the streets. Mobile phones, WiFi, microwaves, cordless phones, computers, baby monitors plus a smart meter is not Healthy! Babies and small children's cells are going to grow in a deformed state of being that is not natural and when they sleep their bodies can not recover from the radiation as they are still being exposed to it.

Waiting for high levels of scientific and clinical proof before taking action on electromagnetic fields… can lead to very high health and economic costs, as was the case with asbestos, leaded petrol and tobacco (Council of Europe, 2011).

In 2009, Victoria became the first state in Australia to introduce smart meters. In time, all states will be involved through the National Smart Meter Rollout, though they are being installed in other states if you have a grid connected solar system. Smart meters enable the utility companies to measure and record remotely how much electricity you use at different times of the day and week. As such they will be able to charge different rates for different times of the day, week and year. In order to be able to read your meter remotely, a pulsed radiofrequency is emitted several times per day (some say up to 6 times however this varies depending upon whom you talk to) using mobile phone technology in the range of 915 to 928MHz and 2.4GHz. Whilst these frequencies are within the Australian guidelines, our exposure standards fare poorly when compared with other countries. This is not good for individuals who are electrically sensitive. Given that it is mandatory, consumers are powerless to stop the installation of these devices. In 2010, the Netherlands prevented a bill making smart meters compulsory - Australia should do the same.

You guys just dont get it.
