Whew, these trees are fir’reaking rad! One of the most common trees you’ll find when out for a rip in the mountains of Cascadia are Subalpine Firs, characterized by their springy horizontal branches, bushy needles that curl upwards, and smooth silverish bark that ages into a luscious dark brown fissured texture. Like all true Firs, their cones stand upright on their branches and they flake off throughout the winter, leaving standing cores or spikes that are easy to spot from afar. Those little flakes that come from the cones are lightweight little seeds that get blown around the mountain and into the snowpack, which settle down into a nice spot to germinate once the snow melts. Yet growing in these alpine environments is rough, and survival is dictated by whether or not a tree can get some sort of shelter to establish itself, which often comes from another fellow tree. Thus, these trees tend to grow in clusters around the mountains as one grows big enough under the shelter of another to then be able to provide shelter to another that grows bigger than it, and so on. Pretty neat to see these little trees growing up in spots dictated by snowmelt and water flow, which then shapes the whole alpine environment into the radical place that we all love so much! 🤙🌲 Like this vid?
