Joseph Hallie "Joe" Keaton (July 6, 1867 – January 13, 1946) was an American vaudeville performer and silent film actor. He was the father of actor Buster Keaton.
He was born as Joseph Hallie Keaton a few miles south of Terre Haute, Indiana. Keaton was born to Libbie Jane and Joseph Francis Keaton IV. Keaton - leaving home in 1889, the year of the Land Rush- for a time homesteaded in the Oklahoma territory, securing a claim three and a half miles northwest of Edmond. A few months into Keaton's residency, the neighboring homesteader- a Canadian whom Keaton had befriended on their shared journey west- was murdered and partially buried by a claim jumper; the body was subsequently discovered- and "justice was meted out" to the murderer- by Keaton and a group of three or four men that included Robert Galbreath, Jr.
On May 31, 1894, Joe Keaton eloped with Myra Edith Cutler, who became known as Myra Keaton. Myra, who had English and German ancestry, performed with Joe in a vaudeville act. Joe and Myra's first child was Joseph Frank Keaton, who became known as the silent film actor Buster Keaton; their other children were Harry Keaton and Louise Keaton.
Joseph Frank "Buster" Keaton (October 4, 1895 – February 1, 1966) was an American actor, director, producer, writer, and stunt performer. He was best known for his silent films, in which his trademark was physical comedy with a consistently stoic, deadpan expression, earning him the nickname "The Great Stone Face". Keaton was recognized as the seventh-greatest film director by Entertainment Weekly. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Keaton the 21st greatest male star of Classic Hollywood Cinema. Critic Roger Ebert wrote of Keaton's "extraordinary period from 1920 to 1929, [when] he worked without interruption on a series of films that make him, arguably, the greatest actor-director in the history of the movies". His career declined afterward with a dispiriting loss of his artistic independence when he was hired by MGM, which resulted in a crippling alcoholism that ruined his family life. He recovered in the 1940s, remarried, and revived his career to a degree as an honored comic performer for the rest of his life, earning an Academy Honorary Award in 1959.
Edward Francis Cline (November 4, 1891 – May 22, 1961) was a screenwriter, actor, writer and director best known for his work with comedians W.C. Fields and Buster Keaton. He was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin and died in Hollywood.
Edward F. Cline began working for Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios in 1914 and supported Charlie Chaplin in some of the shorts he made at the studio. At one time he claimed credit for having come up with the idea for the Sennett Bathing Beauties. When Buster Keaton began making his own shorts, after having worked with Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle for years, he hired Cline as his co-director. In Keaton's short films Cline and Keaton himself were the only two regular gag men. For Keaton's 1921 short, Hard Luck, Cline is credited with originating Keaton's personal favorite gag from his films. At the end of the film, Keaton dives into a swimming pool which has been emptied of water. Years later he emerges from the hole which his fall created, accompanied by a Chinese wife and two small Chinese-American children. Besides working on most of Keaton's early shorts, Cline co-directed Keaton's first feature, Three Ages (1923).
Joe Roberts (February 2, 1871 – October 28, 1923) was an American comic actor, who appeared in 16 of Buster Keaton's 19 silent short films of the 1920s.
"Big Joe" Roberts, as he was known in vaudeville, toured the country with his first wife, Lillian Stuart Roberts as part of a rowdy act known as Roberts, Hays, and Roberts. Their signature routine was called "The Cowboy, the Swell and the Lady." At this time, in the first decade of the twentieth century, Buster Keaton's father, Joe Keaton, had started a summer Actors' Colony for vaudevillians between Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake in Michigan. Roberts became acquainted with the Keaton family as a member of this community.
When Buster Keaton's film apprenticeship years with Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle came to an end, and Keaton began making his own shorts in 1920, he asked Roberts to join him. Roberts' hefty 6'3" frame, usually playing a menacing heavy or authority figure, made a striking and amusing contrast to the thin, 5'6" Keaton.

"A friend in the know describes how the family rambled on! Gig to gig. Gerry society having Joe Keaton arrested numerous times! The act though popular was below the social mores of the time. A short interview about and with Buster, describing the Vaudeville gag that he reused in Convict 13. Buster Keaton played baseball in the Hearst Mansion. He swung from chandeliers with Douglas Fairbanks. He helped invent the art of movie making. He acted, directed and starred in over 60 films in the 1920's alone! If he and I lived at the same time. In director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s comedy Birdman—the story of a former superhero actor trying to shed the stigma of his former role and be taken seriously as a dramatic theater actor/director—it’s impossible to ignore the comparisons to lead actor Michael Keaton’s own professional history as the star of Batman and Batman Begins. In an exclusive clip from EPIX and the LA Times’ Lead Actor episode of the roundtable series “Hollywood Sessions”, Keaton addresses the correlation, saying he was aware of it when he first read the script, but felt the depth of the material transcended that superficial reading of his role in the film. Check out the full clip in which Keaton talks Birdman and Batman comparisons after the jump, and tune into “Hollywood Sessions: Lead Actor” tonight at 8pm E...
