The Importance of Our Church Covenant
A mere two months after the Los Angeles Dodgers inked a new, two–year, $45 million guaranteed deal with power hitter Manny Ramirez, the slugger got hit with a 50–game suspension for using a banned performance–enhancing substance. The reason, a “Behavior” clause written into his contract. The 50 game suspension will save the Dodgers 8 million dollars.
Earlier this year Kellogg’s backed out of an endorsement deal with Michael Phelps because of a “Behavior Clause” they had written into the contract. You know them as “Morality Clauses”, but because of changing morals, they have become specific “behavior” clauses.
There was once a time when an advertiser could get an agent to agree to the following clause: “If [Celebrity] has committed any act that offends the community or any segment thereof and/or public morals and decency, such behavior shall be considered a material breach of this Agreement incapable of cure, and if in [Advertiser’s] sole judgment such breach is likely to cause a diminution in the value of the [Advertiser’s] commercial association with [Celebrity], then [Advertiser] shall have the right, in addition to any other rights [Advertiser] may have as a result of such breach, to immediately terminate this Agreement on written notice to [Celebrity]. In such event, there shall be no further compensation payable to [Celebrity] and such termination shall not limit or effect any other rights [Advertiser] may have against [Celebrity] under this Agreement on account of such termination.”
However, society’s views of morality have changed, so contracts have gotten to be very specific as regards the “behavior” of the celebrities. With Michael Phelps, public drug use was clearly prohibited.
These behavior clauses have even entered the world o Big Banks. The latest banking crisis underscored the importance of not appearing greedy in the face of massive government bailouts at taxpayer expense. The government refused to give “Bailout Funds” unless certain behavior standards were met. Corporate executives lost their jobs and had their pay cut because of lavish extravaganza’s and exorbitant bonuses while Americans saw Billions of dollars in savings wiped out.
In the sports world, in the corporate world, in the banking world, how we behave and act is very important, so important that people lose millions when they fail to live up to certain standards.
Even in the church, our behavior is important. George Barna has become well-known because of the extensive research and surveys he conducts. He has noticed some alarming trends in the church, particularly in regards to our “Biblical World view”. A Survey published in March of this year produced these results:
For the purposes of the survey, a “biblical worldview” was defined as believing that absolute moral truth exists; the Bible is totally accurate in all of the principles it teaches; Satan is considered to be a real being or force, not merely symbolic; a person cannot earn their way into Heaven by trying to be good or do good works; Jesus Christ lived a sinless life on earth; and God is the all-knowing, all-powerful creator of the world who still rules the universe today. In the research, anyone who held all of those beliefs was said to have a biblical worldview.
The same questions were asked of respondents in national surveys by Barna in 1995, 2000 and 2005. The results indicate that the percentage of adults with a biblical worldview, as defined above, has remained unchanged for more than a decade. The numbers show that 7% had such a worldview in 1995, compared to 10% in 2000, 11% in 2005, and 9% now. Even among born again adults, the statistics have remained flat: 18% in 1995, 22% in 2000, 21% in 2005, and 19% today.
Varying numbers of Americans embrace the different aspects of biblical worldview thinking. The survey found that:
* One-third of all adults (34%) believe that moral truth is absolute and unaffected by the circumstances. Slightly less than half of the born again adults (46%) believe in absolute moral truth.
* Half of all adults firmly believe that the Bible is accurate in all the principles it teaches. That proportion includes the four-fifths of born again adults (79%) who concur.
* Just one-quarter of adults (27%) are convinced that Satan is a real force. Even a minority of born again adults (40%) adopt that perspective.
* Similarly, only one-quarter of adults (28%) believe that it is impossible for someone to earn their way into Heaven through good behavior. Not quite half of all born again Christians (47%) strongly reject the notion of earning salvation through their deeds.
* A minority of American adults (40%) are persuaded that Jesus Christ lived a sinless life while He was on earth. Slightly less than two-thirds of the born again segment (62%) strongly believes that He was sinless.
* Seven out of ten adults (70%) say that God is the all-powerful, all-knowing creator of

STARCHER'S LAMENT
After 10 years insided the walls, Doug Starcher prepares for life outside of prison.
Created by Victor J. Blue
SEPTA Correctional Facility gives low level and chronic felons a chance to make it on the outside through education and rehabilitation. But, can it create the kind of change necessary to keep them out of prison and off drugs?

TRANSCRIPT:
DOUG STARCHER: Can People Change? Of course, yeah, I mean it's all in who you are, it's if you want to change, it's if you've had enough of the life that you're leading... Everybody can change man. If given the right opportunity, everybody knows what it is to change, knows what it takes.
If you add all my just adult time when I leave here it'll be 10 years 7 months. If you throw the juvenile time and everything in with that, I don't know, it'd be over fifteen.
I'm definitely not proud to set here and say that, you know what I mean I have nothing, I have less than thirty days to the door, and every day that it gets closer I'm definitely scareder.
See, everybody's felons, from grandma and grandpa, mom and dad, all my uncles, all my brothers, we all got penitentiary numbers, all got better than three in.
I guess you would call it that's what was normal, you know what I mean, I thought that was a part of growing up, you know what I mean, you had to go to prison too, just like everybody else did. I knew when I got out that I was on my way back the day I got out. And this time was different, I got to take advantage of some programs, got to come here, obviously, you know what I mean, accomplished- I got my GED, I got a better plan, I've gotten older, got a little bit wiser.
DOUG STARCHER: That's a part of a prison mentality too, you know what I mean, uh, I run with a certain group of people inside the penitentiary, and trained myself to be a soldier, to be a warrior every day, to hate anything with diversity, to hate anything that wasn't white, you know what I mean, I had a bad chip on my shoulder and I hated, you know what I mean, I hated
I've had enough, that life is not for me, you should never hate no one for the color of their skin. Obviously I've got a lot of tattoos on me that's gonna cause me issues later on in life, but then you know I went home in '04, and to keep it all the way real, I met this girl, my son's mom- she's white as we are bro- and I fell in love with the girl. She asked me to go to her family reunion with her, we pulled up- everyone there's black. I end up leaving, going home, locked myself in a hotel room for three days, and that's when you know, god put it on my heart. Love doesn't have a color. Love don't care red, green blue, all people are equal. There's good black people, good white people, there's bad everybody's.
I don't got that hatred inside of me no more, I don't got that uh...coldness I guess you'd say. Bro I've hurt people, you know what I'm sayin', and it's hard for me to deal with now thinking why I would ever hurt a man that bad over the color of his skin.
DOUG STARCHER: (Playing Cards) I just now thought of what I should have played back to ya... but it's alright. I should have played hearts back to you, I know you got that king and queen over there... Micro-Microphone check... Caught 'em. One more and their done... Aw, awww my goodness....
DOUG STARCHER: No, I definitely did that much time in the hole... 192 is the biggest hole shot I did.
You know, prison is an emotionally cold place. It's not a place where you cry. So you lose a piece of yourself and if you lose it forever, if you go emotionally dead, you might as well be dead. You know what I mean, and I been lucky enough to not lose contact with me. I do got a big heart, I do care about people in general, and being loved and being able to love.
DOUG STARCHER: There's no rehabilitation in prison, you know what I mean, they talk about the department of rehabilitation and corrections, it's not that. You go to the prison, you set, you can get high, get tattoos, there's nothing, you know what I mean, you don't have to do anything.
I wrote the judge a letter and told him you know you keep sending me back and forth to prison but you're not helping me. They're not trying to rehabilitate me, where's the rehabilitation at. So, he give me the option to come here, I come here to SEPTA, and you have to do this program. It's either participate and do it or go back to prison.
DOUG STARCHER: It's that cause and effect thing, I liked it. Counseling- I think about the choice I'm gonna make. Think things through first, think about what the consequences are gonna be. Think about what the outcome might be.
SEPTA for me is like this- I come here for IOP, that's why I come, because I'm a drug addict, I wanted to figure out what was wrong and try to fix it. IOP is for intensive outpatient. It's for addicts, in general whether it be alcohol or drugs, counseling is what I wo

Queen's Counsel
Queen's Counsel
All about Queen's Counsel. This is another Text 2 Audio transformation using Flite. Below is the transcript for the recording: Queen's Counsel , known as King's Counsel during the reign of a male sovereign, are jurists appointed by letters patent to be one of "Her His Majesty's Counsel learned in the law". Membership exists in various Commonwealth jurisdictions around the world, while in some other jurisdictions the name has been replaced by one without monarchical connotations, such as "Senior Counsel" or "Senior Advocate". Queen's Counsel is a status, conferred by the Crown, that is recognised by courts. Members have the privilege of sitting within the Bar of court. As members wear silk gowns of a particular design , the award of Queen's or King's Counsel is known informally as taking silk, and hence QCs are often colloquially called silks. Appointments are made from within the legal profession on the basis of merit rather than a particular level of experience. However, successful applicants tend to be barristers, or advocates, or solicitor advocates with 15 years' experience or more.- published: 08 Oct 2013
