Corneal ulcers can be very severe infections of the clear surface of the eye. Watch this episode of A State of Sight with Isaac Porter, MD to learn about the risk factors, symptoms, and potential treatments of corneal ulcers.
Fortunately, most of the time, appropriate antibiotics can treat an infection of the cornea, but there may be a scar remaining after it clears. Contacts are the #1 cause of corneal ulcers and it is very important not to sleep in contact lenses since the risk for an ulcer is much higher.

Hey guys! Bit of a different video today! As I'm writing this my eye is playing up again just from wearing my monthly lenses for one night and taking them out overnight - my right eye is still bright red 2 days later and really sore :( It's not worth messing up your eyes from wearing contact lenses instead of glasses every single day, especially with bad eyesight/ thicker lenses :( Any questions you have- fire away on any of my social media down below!

Corneal ulcer
Corneal ulcer, or ulcerative keratitis, is an inflammatory or more seriously, infective condition of the cornea involving disruption of its epithelial layer with involvement of the corneal stroma. It is a common condition in humans particularly in the tropics and the agrarian societies. In developing countries, children afflicted by Vitamin A deficiency are at high risk for corneal ulcer and may become blind in both eyes, which may persist lifelong. In ophthalmology, a corneal ulcer usually refers to having an infectious etiology while the term corneal abrasion refers more to physical abrasions.
Corneal healing
An ulcer of the cornea heals by two methods: migration of surrounding epithelial cells followed by mitosis (dividing) of the cells, and introduction of blood vessels from the conjunctiva. Superficial small ulcers heal rapidly by the first method. However, larger or deeper ulcers often require the presence of blood vessels to supply inflammatory cells. White blood cells and fibroblasts produce granulation tissue and then scar tissue, effectively healing the cornea.
