Karl Nickerson Llewellyn (May 22, 1893 – February 13, 1962) was a prominent American jurisprudential scholar associated with the school of legal realism. The Journal of Legal Studies has identified Llewellyn as one of the twenty most cited American legal scholars of the 20th century.

He was born on May 22, 1893 in Seattle but grew up in Brooklyn. He attended Yale College and Yale Law School, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Yale Law Journal.

Llewellyn was studying abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris when World War I broke out in 1914. He was sympathetic to the German cause and traveled to Germany in an attempt to enlist in the German army, only to be rejected because of his refusal to renounce his American citizenship. Nevertheless, Llewellyn was allowed to fight with the 78th Prussian Infantry Regiment, and was injured at the First Battle of Ypres. For his actions, he was promoted to sergeant and decorated with the Iron Cross, 2nd class. After spending ten weeks in a German hospital at Nürtingen, and having his petition to enlist without swearing allegiance to Germany turned down, Llewellyn returned to the United States and his studies at Yale in March 1915. Amazingly, after the United States entered the war, Llewellyn attempted to enlist in the US army. He was rejected due to his participation in the German army.

Brian Leiter (born 1963) is an American philosopher and legal scholar who is currently Karl N. Llewellyn Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Chicago Law School, and founder and Director of Chicago's new Center for Law, Philosophy, and Human Values and the editor of the Philosophical Gourmet Report. He taught from 1995 to 2008 at the University of Texas School of Law. Before that he taught for two years at the University of San Diego School of Law, and was also a visiting assistant professor of philosophy at the University of California, San Diego. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Princeton University and both his J.D. and Ph.D. (in philosophy) from the University of Michigan.

At Texas, Leiter was Founder and Director of the Law and Philosophy Program. He has been a visiting professor at Yale Law School, University College London, and University of Chicago Law School and will be a visiting professor of philosophy at Oxford University in 2011-12. He edited the journal Legal Theory for seven years and is also editor of the Routledge Philosophers, a new series of introductions to major philosophers, and (with Leslie Green) Oxford Studies in the Philosophy of Law. He gave the 'Or 'Emet Lecture at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University, Toronto in 2006, and the Fresco Lectures at the University of Genoa and the Dunbar Lecture in Law and Philosophy at the University of Mississippi in 2008.

Cass Robert Sunstein (born September 21, 1954) is an American legal scholar, particularly in the fields of constitutional law, administrative law, environmental law, and law and behavioral economics, who currently is the Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the Obama administration. For 27 years, Sunstein taught at the University of Chicago Law School, where he continues to teach as the Harry Kalven Visiting Professor. Sunstein is currently Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, where he is on leave while working in the Obama administration.

Sunstein was born on September 21, 1954 in Concord, Massachusetts, the son of Marian (née Goodrich), a teacher, and Cass Richard Sunstein, a builder. His family was Jewish. He graduated in 1972 from the Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts. He earned an A.B. in 1975 from Harvard College, where he was a member of the varsity squash team and the Harvard Lampoon. In 1978, Sunstein received a J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he was executive editor of the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review and part of a winning team of the Ames Moot Court Competition. He served as a law clerk first for Justice Benjamin Kaplan of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (1978–1979) and later for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the United States Supreme Court (1979–1980).

Grant Llewellyn (born 1962, Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales) is a Welsh conductor.

Grant Llewellyn began developing his conducting reputation in 1985, when he was awarded a conducting fellow position at the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts. There his mentors included Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Kurt Masur and André Previn. He later conducted concerts at the Tanglewood Festival with the Boston Pops and as assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. From 1990 to 1995, he was associate conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He was principal guest conductor of the Stavanger Symfoniorkester from 1993 to 1996. Llewellyn served as chief conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (deFilharmonie) of Flanders from 1995 to 1998.

From 2001 to 2006, Llewellyn was the music director of the Handel and Haydn Society (Boston) and now holds the title of principal conductor. Since July 2004, he has been music director of the North Carolina Symphony. His initial contract was for 4 years, and in November 2006, his contract was extended to 2012.

Karl Sabbagh is a Palestinian-British writer, journalist and television producer. His work is mainly non-fiction: he has written books about historical events and produced documentaries for both British and American broadcasters.

Karl Sabbagh was born in Worcestershire, England, during the early 1940s. His father was the Palestinian Christian broadcaster Isa Sabbagh, at the time working for the BBC Arabic Service; his mother, born Pamela Graydon, was English, though of American and Irish parentage. His parents divorced soon after he was born, and his father subsequently lived in the United States, but Karl (originally named Khalil after his grandfather) remained in England with his mother.

Sabbagh's 2006 book Palestine interweaves a history of Palestine from the 18th century, with an account of his own family, who were prominent Christian members of Palestinian society in Galilee throughout that period, settled in the town of Safad from at least the beginning of the 19th century. The book includes a critical account of the Zionist settlement and eventual takeover of Palestine in the first half of the 20th century.
