Jaidev Hindi:जयदेव वर्मा (3 August 1919-6 January 1987; born Jaidev Verma), was a music composer in Bollywood films, most known for his work in films: ''Hum Dono'' (1961), ''Reshma Aur Shera'' (1972), ''Prem Parbat'' (1973) and ''Gharonda'' (1977).

He is the only music director in the Indian film industry (apart from A.R. Rahman and Ilayaraja) to have won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction, three times, ''Reshma Aur Shera'' (1972), ''Gaman'' (1979) and ''Ankahee'' (1985).

Early life

Jaidev was born in Nairobi and brought up in Ludhiana, India. In 1933, when he was 15 years old, he ran away to Bombay to become a film star. There, he acted in eight films as a child star for the Wadia Film Company. He was initiated into music at a young age in Ludhiana by Prof. Barkat Rai. Later, when he made it Bombay, he learnt music from Krishnarao Jaokar and Janardan Jaokar.

Unfortunately, he had to leave his film career abruptly and return to Ludhiana, due to his father’s blindness, which thrust the sole responsibility of his family on his young shoulders.

After his father died, Jaidev took the responsibility of looking after his sister, Ved Kumari and later got her married to Sat-Paul Varma. After that in 1943, he left for Lucknow to study under the tutelage of music maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Career

Ali Akbar Khan took Jaidev as his music assistant, in 1951, when he composed music for Navketan's 'Aandhiyan' and 'Hum Safar'. From film 'Taxi Driver' on, he became assistant to music composer, S. D. Burman.

His big break as a full-fledged music director came with Chetan Anand's film, ''Joru Ka Bhai'', followed by Chetan Anand's next ''Anjali'', both of these films became very popular.

Though it was with the film Navketan's Hum Dono (1961) that Jaidev true came into the limelight, with classic songs like, "Allah Tero Naam", 'Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar", "Main Zindagi Ka Saath" and "Kabhi khud pe Kabhi Halat pe". His other big success came with ''Sunil Dutt'' star, Mujhe Jeene Do (1963).

Though many of Jaidev's films failed at the box office, many of them, such as ''Alap'', ''Kinare Kinare'' and ''Ankahee'', are remembered for his imaginative musical scores. He had a unique capability to mix traditional and folk music into bollywood film situations, giving him a unique advantge to other music directors of his times.

He also known for his non-film album of the couplets of Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan's classic work ''Madhushala'' set to music and sung by singer Manna Dey.

He is one of the favourite composers of Lata Mangeshkar besides Salil Chaudhari and Madan Mohan.

Jaidev never married, though he remained close to his sister’s family, who later settled in the United Kingdom. He died on 6 January 1987, at the age of 68.

Feroz Khan (Hindi: फ़िरोज़ ख़ान, Urdu: فیروزخان September 25, 1939 – 27 April 2009) was an Indian actor, film editor, producer and director in the Hindi film industry. For his flamboyant style, with cowboyish swagger and cigar toting persona which revolutionised the style quotient of the otherwise conventional Filmi hero, he is known as the Clint Eastwood of the East and a style icon in the industry.

He appeared in over 50 films in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and became one of India's best-loved heroes with his role in the 1980 hit film ''Qurbani'', which he also directed. Khan followed this multi-disciplinary achievement by directing more successful films like ''Dayavan'' (1988) and ''Janbaaz'' (1986). He won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for ''Aadmi Aur Insaan'' in 1970, and was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.

Early life

Khan was born in the Indian city of Bangalore on September 25, 1939, but his roots are traced to Afghanistan. His father was Sadiq Ali Khan Tanoli, an Afghan (ethnic Hindkowan) hailing from the Ghazni province of Afghanistan, and his mother was Iranian. He was educated in Bishop Cotton Boys' School, Bangalore and St. Germain's Boys High School, Bangalore. His brothers are Sanjay Khan (Abbas Khan), Shahrukh Shah Ali Khan, Sameer Khan and Akbar Khan (director). He has a sister Dilshad Bibi. After his schooling in Bangalore, he arrived in Mumbai where he made his debut as second lead in ''Didi'' in 1960.

Career

Through the early 1960s and 1970s, he made low-budget thrillers opposite starlets. In 1962, he appeared in an English-language film titled ''Tarzan Goes to India'' opposite Simi Garewal. His first big hit was in 1965, with Phani Majumdar's ''Oonche Log'' (1965), where he was pitted against screen idols Raaj Kumar and Ashok Kumar; he gave a notable sensitive performance. Again, in the same year, he played a sacrificing lover in the mushy musical ''Arzoo'', starring Sadhana. With this, Khan earned his entry into A-list second leads. With the film ''Aadmi Aur Insaan'' (1969), Khan won his first Filmfare award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He appeared alongside his real-life brother Sanjay Khan in the hit films ''Upaasna'' (1967), ''Mela'' (1971), and ''Nagin'' (1976).

He turned into a successful producer and director in 1971 so as to improve his career opportunities as a leading man with his first directorial film ''Apradh'', which was the first Indian movie showing auto racing in Germany; Mumtaaz was his co-star. He produced, directed, and starred in the 1975 film ''Dharmatma'', which was the first Indian film to be shot in Afghanistan and was also his first blockbuster hit as producer, director, and star and marked appearance of actress Hema Malini in a glamorous avatar. This movie was inspired by the Hollywood film ''The Godfather''.

Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, he was a leading Bollywood star, directing and starring in many of his films. He also starred in the Punjabi film ''Bhagat Dhanna Jat'' (1974). The 1980 film ''Qurbani'', with Zeenat Aman, was the biggest hit of his career and launched the singing career of iconic Pakistani pop singer Nazia Hassan, with her memorable track "Aap Jaisa Koi." In 1986, he directed and starred in ''Janbaaz'', a box-office hit, which some consider to be one of his best movies, featured an all-star cast and was possessed of great songs and excellent cinematography. In 1988, he directed and starred in ''Dayavan'', which was a remake of a South Indian film titled ''Nayagan''. After directing and starring in ''Yalgaar'' (1992), he took a long break from acting for 11 years.

He launched his son Fardeen Khan's career with the 1998 film ''Prem Aggan'', which, however, was a box-office bomb. In 2003, he made his acting comeback as well as produced and directed ''Janasheen'', which also starred his son Fardeen. He always used performing animals in his films—a chimpanzee and lion were used in ''Janasheen''—but People for Animals (PFA) Haryana chairman Naresh Kadyan moved a complaint in the court of law at Faridabad for animal cruelty and legal action as per law against the producer, director, and actor.

He starred alongside his son again in ''Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena'' (2005) and made his last film appearance in ''Welcome'' (2007).

Feroz Khan was ahead of his time in terms of his unmatchable style, which reflected in his movies and music. His movies like ''Qurbani'' and ''Dharmatma'' are cult favourites in Hindi cinema. Though he was not considered a superstar, he would remain immortal for several years to come.

In May 2006, Feroz Khan was blacklisted by then Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf when he went there to promote his brother's film, ''Taj Mahal''. In an intelligence report submitted to Musharraf, he was said to have gotten drunk and insulted Pakistani singer and anchor Fakhr-e-Alam and criticizing the country saying:

"I am a proud Indian. India is a secular country. The Muslims there are making lot of progress unlike in Pakistan. Our President is a Muslim and our Prime Minister a Sikh. Pakistan was made in the name of Islam, but look how the Muslims are killing Muslims here."

Pakistan's high commission in India and the foreign and interior ministries were subsequently directed to deny Khan a visa in the future.

Personal life

Feroz Khan has a son named Fardeen Khan who is married to Natasha Madhwani, daughter of former Bollywood actress Mumtaz. He also has a daughter Laila Khan, who is married to Farhan Furniturewala. Laila was married to Rohit Rajpal, a national level tennis player but divorced him and married Furniturewala in 2010. Although Fardeen and Farhan had their differences and nearly came to blows at a nightclub with each other, Fardeen and Farhan sorted everything out and accepted each other later on.

Death and Funeral

He succumbed to a battle with cancer on April 27, 2009. During his illness he returned to rest at his farmhouse in Bangalore.

He was laid to rest in his beloved Bangalore near to his mother's grave at Hosur Road Shia Kabristan with thousands in attendance included his close family, dear friends, and notable celebrities of Indian film industry. He was remembered for his larger than life presence, and excellence in cinema.

Gurdas Maan () is an Punjabi singer, songwriter, choreographer, and actor. He is considered one of the most notable figures in the world of Punjabi music. He was born in Giddarbaha village of Indian Punjab and gained national attention in 1980 with the song "Dil Da Mamla Hai." Since then, he has gone on to record over 27 albums and has written over 200 songs.

Early life

Maan was formally educated in D.A.V College Malout Punjab. After completing his education there, his parents enrolled him in a further education institute in Patiala. As a keen sports enthusiast Maan was fascinated by the National Institute of Sports in the city; this prompted him to join the N.I.S. and gain a Masters degree in physical education.

He took part in youth festivals organized by universities and won several awards for his singing and acting, always supported by his friends. He competed in many athletic events and won medals including a bronze at the National Championship as well as achieving a black belt in judo.

Career

1980s

In one of his stage plays, he performed a song he had written called "Dil Da Mamla Hai." The play was seen by a producer for Doordarshan Kendra Jalandhar, the producer who thought the song to have potential approached Maan with a proposition for a TV performance of the song to which Maan agreed. When the song was aired on 31 December 1980 it gained national attention and Gurdas Maan became a national figure. The success of the song attracted the attention of HMV who wanted to record and release it. With HMV Maan eventually released his debut album a year later in 1981. When Maan began his career as a solo performer in India, the music industry was dominated by duet artists and he reportedly declined many offers to become part of a duet as he wished to perform and become a successful solo artist. The film that Gurdas Mann starred in "Mamla Garbar Hai" was directed by Hari Dutt.

During his early career he also wrote and directed TV programs such as POP Time for the Doordarshan Network in Delhi.

1990s and 2000s

Gurdas Maan is often credited with raising Punjabi folk music from a regional level mostly in the Punjab to gain international recognition. His album ''Apna Punjab'' won Best Album at the 1998 Asian Pop and Media Awards held in Birmingham. Maan won Best Song for the title track and Best International Artist the same year. In addition to these awards, Maan more recently won three music awards of Best Lyrics ("Kudiye")Best Song ("Heer"), as well as Best Singer of the Year at the ETC Channel Punjabi Music Awards on 6 March 2005.(Ravinder)

Awards and honours

Gurdas Maan received an honorary degree of Doctor of Music from the University of Wolverhampton on 7 Sept 2010. Maan performed at the Royal Albert Hall for two nights in April 2011 as part of his UK tour. This was the first time Maan performed at the Royal Albert Hall, an opportunity that very few artists come across.

On other fronts, Maan has starred in blockbuster Bollywood films and has received numerous awards, including the Jury’s Award, presented to him by the president of India in 2005.

In 2009 he won "Best International Album" at the UK Asian Music Awards for ''Boot Polishan''.

In 2007 he won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his song titled "Couplets of Heer" for the movie ''Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris''.

In 2011 PTC Punjabi Film Awards, He won Critics Award for Best Actor in a Movie - Sukhmani.

Film

Gurdas Maan is best known as an actor for his performances in two films: ''Waris Shah-Ishq Da Waaris'' (2006), which was nominated as India's selection for the Academy Awards, and ''Shaheed-E-Mohabbat'' (1999), the film which tells the real-life story of Boota Singh.

Gurdas appeared in the hit film ''Shaheed Udham Singh'' (2000), in which he played the role of Bhagat Singh, a revolutionary, with no prejudices based on religion, caste or creed. As a singer Maan has worked with music directors such as Laxmikant Pyarelal, Bappi Lahiri, Anu Malik, Nadeem Sharvan, Amar Haidipur, Charanjeet Ahuja, and Jaswant Bhanyra.

He starred alongside Juhi Chawla in the epic ''Des Hoyaa Pardes'' (2004), an emotional film illustrating the tragedies faced by the people of Punjab in the 1980s. He adopted the role of a son of a well-respected Jatt (bilingual separatist) Gurdev Singh Somal. He falls in love with a high-ranking police officer’s daughter. Before the wedding, the father is murdered by separatists. This tale soon twists in to the inevitable demise of Gurshaan (Gurdas Maan). This movie was based on actual events.

Aside from singing in Punjabi, he is fluent in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Haryanvi and Rajasthani. As an actor he has performed in Punjabi, Hindi and Tamil movies, but he is best known for his starring role in ''Waris Shah-Ishq Da Waaris'', a depiction of the Punjabi poet Waris Shah during the creation of his epic poem Heer Ranjha, again co-starring Juhi Chawla and Divya Dutta. He made a special appearance in ''Veer-Zaara'' with Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta.

Personal life

Maan is married to Manjit and has one son Gurikk who has done his schooling at Yadavindra Public School and Mayo College. He also studied at Eton College. His brothers name is Paramjit Bahia

In Kundli, Sonepat, Haryana, India on 20 January 2007 Maan was involved in a car accident in which his Range Rover was hit and severely damaged by a truck. Maan escaped with minor injuries on his face, hands and chest. His driver Ganesh was injured seriously but recovered soon after.

This was the second car accident of two that Gurdas Maan was involved in. The first accident was a head-on collision between Maan's vehicle and a truck on 9 January 2001 at a village near Rupnagar, Punjab. In this accident Maan's driver Tejpal was killed. Maan later admitted that his driver asked him to wear his seat belt minutes before the accident. Maan believes that if it had not been for his driver's advice, he would have been dead as well. Later he wrote and performed a song "Baithi sade naal savari utter gayi" dedicated to his driver, who was also his good friend.

During a radio interview Maan revealed to the host, Gagan Grewal, that he is an avid supporter of Liverpool football club.
