Mfuleni is a relatively new township about 40 kilometres from Cape Town, South Africa. It is a predominantly Black township, although there are also some Coloured members of the community.
Mfuleni is a suburb of Blue Downs area and is close to the sprawling township of Khayelitsha and also next to the new suburb of Malibu. Around 52,300 people live in this township. Most were moved there from the late 1990s following flooding and fires in different townships across the Western Cape, such as Philippi, Nyanga and Khayelitsha. Hence, the mixed nature of the community here. Unemployment, HIV/AIDS and crime are some of the most pressing problems in this poor township.

Since its formation, Habitat for Humanity South Africa has provided shelter for more than 10 000 people and brought volunteers together across racial, economic, cultural and social divides. Habitat for Humanity South Africa works with communities that invite us to partner with them to help address their housing needs. A process of mutual evaluation determines whether a partnership is viable. Habitat for Humanity South Africa considers such factors as the level of need for housing in the community, support of local leadership and community stability. The national governing board approves all new projects. Habitat for Humanity South Africa currently works in three regions across South Africa engaging with communities in the Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal. All Habitat for Humanity South Africa projects are driven by committees consisting of community volunteers. These committees are involved with family selection, homeowner education, the construction programme and monitoring of the individuals' saving programme. Global Buddies Parade in Mfuleni
Today, the new U.S. Global Buddies arrived in the neighborhood where the South African Global Buddies live for the first time. The neighborhood, what is known as a "township" in South Africa, is called Mfuleni, and is amongst Cape Town's poorer neighborhoods, with many people still living in shelters made of tin panels. Fortunately, new houses have been built in Mfuleni and many residents are now living in their first house ever. Many days of the Global Buddies' time together in Cape Town will be spent in Mfuleni, with the community center Women For Peace being the Global Buddies base. Women for Peace, Global Buddies' South African partner provides activities to help women earn a living and many after-school activities for youth including ballroom dancing and music lessons. Mfuleni Early Childhood Centre hosted a mini carnival on October 10, 2015 to fundraise for their staff. On offer for the children: - jumping castles - slip and slide - games - face painting - music/dance groups Food on offer: - traditional South African braai - traditional pens and pooitjies - fish and chips - boerewors rolls The children enjoyed an unlimited supply of ice-cream cones. The Mfuleni Boxing Academy is an incredible NPO located just past Khayelitsha in the Cape Flats. The MBA was founded by Sandile Bokfela who wanted to find a way to make use of his passion for boxing to give back to the community. Sandile's time as a professional boxer himself allows him to really instill the sport's values of respect, discipline and hard work into its members. It services over 30 kids and provides a safe and supportive environment for children in the Mfuleni area. Not the focus of the club but a point to mention none the less is that 2 champions have been trained out of the Academy. The current Eastern Cape Lightweight Champion and the Western Province Flyweight Champion. -

Today, the new U.S. Global Buddies arrived in the neighborhood where the South African Global Buddies live for the first time. The neighborhood, what is known as a "township" in South Africa, is called Mfuleni, and is amongst Cape Town's poorer neighborhoods, with many people still living in shelters made of tin panels. Fortunately, new houses have been built in Mfuleni and many residents are now living in their first house ever. Many days of the Global Buddies' time together in Cape Town will be spent in Mfuleni, with the community center Women For Peace being the Global Buddies base. Women for Peace, Global Buddies' South African partner provides activities to help women earn a living and many after-school activities for youth including ballroom dancing and music lessons. Music and dance is an important part of life in Mfuleni, and especially at Women For Peace. Once the American Global Buddies arrived in Mfuleni, all the Global Buddies from both countries, along with a band from Mfuleni paraded around the township where they were all celebrated by the community which warmly welcomed the U.S. crew.

Sandile's time as a professional boxer himself allows him to really instill the sport's values of respect, discipline and hard work into its members. It services over 30 kids and provides a safe and supportive environment for children in the Mfuleni area. Not the focus of the club but a point to mention none the less is that 2 champions have been trained out of the Academy. The current Eastern Cape Lightweight Champion and the Western Province Flyweight Champion.
