Johannes Brahms - Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73
The Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73, was composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1877 during a visit to Pörtschach am Wörthersee, a town in the Austrian province of Carinthia. The cheery and almost pastoral mood of the symphony often invite comparisons with Beethoven's Sixth Symphony. The premiere was given on December 30, 1877 in Vienna under the direction of Hans Richter.

Governing Body member Stephen Lett used one of his "morning worship" lectures to tell bethelites that ignoring apostate "lies" about child abuse within the organization would help contribute to "oneness." But, as I argue in this video, the dreadful truth about Watchtower's mishandling of child abuse is only too apparent. And with increased media exposure, it is only a matter of time before the majority of Jehovah's Witnesses become aware of what is going on.

Hello everyone!!
I'll have to say sorry to keep you waiting for so long and thank you for being patient! Me and the original Kirby fansubber, Ivyna, are back from the dead and are working to bring you brand new subbed Hoshi no Kaabii episodes! With our forces joined, and with some help from other people, we're sure we will have the rest of the episodes finished at a much faster pace. Anyway, here's a brand new subbed episode for you guys. I hope you'll enjoy!
Also, since YouTube now has this option, we'll be using softsubs until we manage to do the hardsubs (if you wish). I presume you guys don't mind, the softsubs are easy to edit and customize, and we'll also be adding Japanese subs later on.
And if you're willing to help, there's a Tumblr blog dedicated to the subbing project: http://operationhoshinokaabii.tumblr.com/
Help is always appreciated!

29:17 III. Rondo. Allegro (12:04)
The world of music initially reacted less enthusiastically to Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto in E Hat major. Op. 73. "The excessive length of the composition", wrote one reviewer, following the work's first public performance at a Gewandhaus concert in Leipzig on 28 November 1811, "reduced the overall effect that this glorious product of the composer's mind would undoubtedly otherwise have produced." On the one hand, the critic was not entirely wrong, for the Fifth Piano Concerto is Beethoven's longest piano concerto, and in its heroic "Eroica" key of E fiat major is certainly a "glorious product of the composer's mind". But with the best will in the world it is impossible to claim that it falls to produce an "overall effect". Quite the opposite, in fact. The Fifth is the most effective of Beethoven's five piano concertos and one of the most popular of all contributions to the medium.
Outside the German-speaking world the work's special status is acknowledged by descriptions of it as the "Emperor", "L'Empéreur" and "Imperatore". This alternative name was not Beethoven's but probably derives from his friend and publisher Johann Baptist Cramer. In spite of its inauthenticity, it goes straight to the heart of the matter, for no piano concerto begins on a more majestic or a more resplendent note. Three times the full orchestra intones a radiant chord and three times the solo piano responds with a bravura cadenza before the orchestra introduces the main theme. At the climax of the development section, orchestra and solo instrument engage in a veritable battle fought out over harshly dotted rhythms from which they emerge as equals. And even in the soloist's cadenza, the orchestra refuses to fall completely silent but engages in a subtle dialogue with the piano. In none of his other piano concertos was Beethoven as successful in forging a novel synthesis between concertante writing and the gestural language of the symphony.

In time for his 65th birthday in 2007, Daniel Barenboim has completed a cycle of Beethoven's piano concertos. Recorded live at the prestigious Klavier-Festival Ruhr in May 2007, this recording reflects both a very individual and special reading of Beethoven’s music and the artist’s life-long dedication to the composer. Daniel Barenboim is one of the most prolific and high-profile artists performing on international stages today and Beethoven’s masterpieces have been a key part of his repertoire throughout his career, both as conductor and as pianist.
Beethoven himself was a keyboard virtuoso of almost awesome abilities who created a sensation wherever he played. It is no wonder, therefore, that the piano was central to Beethoven’s overall output. Daniel Barenboim, artistic personality and former wunderkind, long an essential part of the international musical scene both on the conductor’s podium and at the piano, is the perfect match for this demanding music. Conducting and playing at the same time, Barenboim chose his orchestra of almost two decades, the Staatskapelle Berlin, which he has praised warmly for its exceptional, dark and warm sound. With a tradition reaching back to 1570, the Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the oldest orchestras in the world. Barenboim plays Beethoven brings together two musical masterminds.
New compositional worlds
We tend to forget that when Ludwig van Beethoven left his home town of Bonn at the end of 1792 and, still only twenty-two years old, travelled to Vienna to receive the "spirit of Mozart from Haydn's hands", it was above all as a pianist that he created a sensation. (lt is worth adding parenthetically that this was in fact Beethoven's second visit to Vienna, but on this occasion he settled in the city for good.) He was a keyboard virtuoso of almost awesome abilities, taking part in contests with rival pianists which, hugely popular with the general public, were applauded frenetically and invariably ended with Beethoven wiping the floor with his worsted opponents. Not only did this create a furore, it also caused alarm: "This is no human being, but the devil himself," exclaimed the Abbé Gelinek, who as a composer and pianist was acclaimed for his improvisations but who bad just been defeated by Beethoven in one such contest. Vienna had never known anything like it. "The very devil is in this young man," Gelinek went on; such playing was unprecedented. "He can overcome difticulties and produce effects on the piano that we could never have imagined in our wildest dreams."
In short, wo may imagine the young Beethoven as the pianist of our dreams. Audiences lay at his feet. Particularly famous is an account by Carl Czerny, one of Beethoven's piano pupils, who describes bis mentor's gifts as an improviser: "In whatever company he might chance to be, he knew how to achieve such an effect upon every listener that frequently not an eye remained dry, while many would break out into loud sobs, for there was something wonderful in his expression in addition to the beauty and originality of his ideas." Beethoven was a romantic seducer who used the black and white keys of the piano as the means by
which to ensorcell his listeners. But he was also an infernal charlatan. "After ending an improvisation of this kind," Czerny went on, "he would burst into loud laughter and banter bis hearers on the emotion he had caused in them."
lt is no wonder, therefore, that the piano was central to Beethoven's overall output. Like Mozart before him, he wrote much for bis own use and, hence, for his triumphant public appearances, which brought him not only success and fame but also money and the goodwill of his patrons. In total, Beethoven wrote five concertos for piano and orchestra, although some writers would argue that he wrote seven, including an early work in E flat major from bis years in Bonn, Wo04, of which only the solo part has survived, and an arrangement of his famous Violin Concerto, Op. 61, which he reworked as a piano concerto, Op. 61a. The five main piano concertos were written between 1788 and 1809 and therefore cover a period of some two decades. This period witnessed a tremendous development in Beethoven's style, a shift that can be traced step by step in the individual concertos. Each has its own style, its characteristic sound world and its own architecture. It is as if Beethoven opened up a new compositional world each new concerto.

The "Moonlight", "Clair de Lune", "Mondscheinsonate" label for this work was coined not by the composer but, five years after his death, by the German poet and music critic Ludwig Relistab. However, Beethoven did describe the work (along its partner, op.27, no.1) as "quasi una fantasia" and the rhapsodic approach this sugets is felt in its unorthodox form. Its begins, unusually, with a slow movement, wich connects to the next movement without a break. Beethoven calls for this calmy rippling fisrt movement to be "played throughout with the utmost delicacy".
By 1801 Beethoven had begun to admit his incoming deafness to the wider world; this and his dedication of the sonata to the young italian countess Giulietta Guicciardi - a pupil around half his age - may account for the world's unusual and highly personal nature.
Daniel Barenboim perfomed the cycle of Beethoven piano sonatas when he was a teenager. The cycle he recorded for Deutsche Grammophon has held its place in the catalogue for thirty years... "Insight and technical command in equal abundance". This particular disc, of the "named" sonatas, has been a natural favourite over the time.

Written in 1802, the three sonatas of Beethoven's Op. 31 probably coincide with the drafting of his famous "Heiligenstadt Testament," in which he expresses despair at his enroaching deafness. If any of the composer's works from this year indicate that he had embarked on a new path, it is the Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31/2. The composer famously dismissed an inquiry about the "meaning" of this work with the advice to read Shakespeare's The Tempest; given the music's overtly dramatic character, it is easy to see how Beethoven might have drawn parallels to, or even inspiration from, the Bard's famous romance. t is usually referred to as "The Tempest" (or Der Sturm in his native German), but the sonata was not given this title by Beethoven, or indeed referred to as such during his lifetime. The name comes from a claim by his associate Anton Schindler that the sonata was inspired by the Shakespeare play. However, much of Schindler's information is distrusted by classical music scholars.
The first six measures present two vastly different ideas: an ascending Largo arpeggiation of the dominant chord, juxtaposed against a frenetic repeated-note Allegro figure that descends and halts abruptly on another dominant chord. It is this passage, and not the ascending forte arpeggios in the bass that appear a few measures later, that forms the main substance of the movement's first theme group. This becomes clear when, in the recapitulation, Beethoven dispenses with the forte passage, connecting the main and secondary themes with new material, which in itself is not an unusual sonata-form procedure. The whole represents the most concentrated, motivically conceived movement Beethoven had yet composed.
The second movement, Adagio, is in B flat major; the movement's tonality is worthy of comment here, since it plays an important modulatory role in the third movement. Like the first movement, the second is a sonata-allegro and opens with a broken triad; unlike the first movement, however, it lacks a development section, and has clearly articulated first and second themes.
The D minor finale is again a sonata allegro. The first theme outlines the tonic triad, while the contrasting second theme moves in almost completely stepwise fashion. In the development section Beethoven employs the first theme exclusively, using repetition and prolonged harmonies to create an overpowering sense of anticipation. Portentously, Beethoven provides further development in a coda that is as long as the exposition.

1. Allegro
2. Largo (attacca)
3. Rondo alla polacca
Itzhak Perlman, violín
Yo-Yo Ma, violonchelo
Daniel Barenboim, piano y director.

(37' 30''~)
1. Adagio
2. Allegro
3. Meno allegro
4. Adagio ma non troppo
5. Marcia, assai vivace
6. Allegretto, ma non troppo
7. Presto
Carola Höhn, Katharina Kammerloher, Andrea Böning,
Endrik Wottrich, Pär Lindskog, René Pape.
Chor Der Deutschen Staatsoper Berlin.
Orquesta Filarmónica de Berlín.
Daniel Barenboim, director.
TEXTO:
Schmeichelnd hold und lieblich klingen
unsers Lebens Harmonien,
und dem Schönheitssinn entschwingen
Blumen sich, die ewig blüh'n.
Fried und Freude gleiten freundlich
wie der Wellen Wechselspiel;
was sich drängte rauh und feindlich,
como el juego alternante de la olas;
priman para el bienaventurado;
y el sol primaveral de las artes
permite que de ambas nazca luz.
Algo grande contenido en el pecho
florece de nuevo en toda su belleza;
Aceptad, pues, almas bellas,

0:50 I. Allegro moderato (19:41)
20:49 II. Andante con moto (5:16)
26:10 III. Rondo. Vivace (12:48)
The Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58 is a work that begins - unprecedentedly - with the solo instrument alone, playing softly and gently ("dolce") and expounding the first subject over five whole bars. Particularly interesting about this theme are its thrice repeated quavers, which are vaguely reminiscent of the pounding motif associated with fate in the opening movement of the Fifth Symphony. Surviving sketches indicate that the opening themes of these very different works were indeed conceived at more or less the same time. The Fourth Piano Concerto dates from 1805-6, a period that also witnessed the composition of the Violin Concerto and Fourth Symphony. The Fourth Piano Concerto and Fourth Symphony both received their first performances at a concert at the Viennese home of Prince Joseph Franz Maximilian Lobkowitz in March 1807. Once again the composer himself was the soloist. A review of a second performance of the concerto described the work as "a new pianoforte concerto of tremendous difficulty that Beethoven performed astonishingly well at the fastest possible speeds".

Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra
Since its inception, EuroArts has a long tradition of producing documentaries about music and the people behind the music. Award winning films like "BIue Note", "Gozaran" - "Time Passing" or "El Sistema" have interwoven personal stories with historical and social developments, and have shown the extraordinary passion of musicians reaching tor their loftiest goals in both Iife and art.
For more than two decades, EuroArts has enjoyed a relationship with Maestro Daniel Barenboim. One of my proudest moments as founder of the company was when director and producer, Paul Smaczny, and ZDF executive, Anca-Monica Pandelea, stepped onto the stage to receive an Emmy® tor the wonderful film "Knowledge is the beginning" about the West-Eastern Divan - a project more than five years in the making.
lt all began in 1996, when during a production Daniel Barenboim told me that he was thinking about doing something to help the situation between Palestine and Israel - he felt that it was important for him to reach out into areas beyond music. What started as a vague idea became clearer after the Maestro's intense discussions with Edward Said.
Barenboim's initiative first bore fruit in 1999 - fittingly, in Weimar, as the orchestra that came out of the program was named the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, after a phrase by Goethe. Nobody would have thought, then, that this project, begun as an interesting experiment, would gain worldwide fame as music and peace ambassadors. In a later conversation with Edward Said (this video), Daniel said that he was taken by the fact how equally talented these young musicians were, despite their very different backgrounds.
EuroArts first produced a short film about the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, and then decided to follow up its progress when the project moved to Seville, another historically significant location. Numerous events followed: concerts in Grenada and Geneva we had the pleasure to record for TV and DVD; sad moments when a concert planned for Cairo had to be moved to Italy for political reasons. The orchestra regularly toured around the world and became well known to any lover of classical music. Never, ever was there a moment where music and politics got mixed up - Daniel Barenboim's determination to create not just a good but excellent orchestra always came first.
The discussions among the musicians - coming from such drastically different backgrounds - proved to be not just interesting for outsiders, but also mind-opening tor everybody on the outside or inside. The orchestra was no melting pot - there was no intention to "change people's minds" —but, in providing the musicians with a common goal in music, it has done much to heal some of the wounds and to bridge the cultural and political divide. Living together on tour, and sharing a common desire to obtain the best for the orchestra, the musicians found any impulse for fighting kept in check. There were moments of anger as well, when conversations in front of rolling cameras were interrupted and grew into heated discussions. Nevertheless, as soon as it came to making music, it worked. There was one common goal: to play well, to deliver the best possible sound, and - in my humble opinion - to please the Maestro.
Sadly, the second mastermind behind the project, Edward Said, passed away in 2003. Daniel Barenboim decided to carry on and has since only increased the range of activities of the Barenboim-Said-Foundation and of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which has become a staple of the world's concert schedules. The Foundation has started a music-oriented kindergarten in Berlin and another in Ramallah. Maestro Barenboim is even planning for a permanent home for his activities in the center of Berlin close to the Staatsoper. Despite his claims that what he does has nothing to do with politics, Barenboim has been more active in his cause than ever.
All of us at EuroArts would like to wish the best of luck to the orchestra and the Foundation; we are grateful to have been able to produce these wonderful programs. lt is our hope that you will not just enjoy watching them, but will share in our deep appreciation for what the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra truly means.

Daniel Barenboim calls for ‘music once more to be taught in schools on a par with literature, mathematics or biology’. Music forces us to listen to contrapuntal voices – a practice Barenboim places on a par with the democratic right to vote. In the Q&A;, Barenboim addresses his own development as a musician, his views on the Israel-Palestine conflict and the BDS movement, and the success of the West-Eastern Divan orchestra.
Filmed at the Southbank Centre, London. Introduced by Jacqueline Rose.
ABOUT THE LRB
Since 1979, the London Review of Books has stood up for the tradition of the literary and intellectual essay in English. Each issue contains up to 15 long reviews and essays by academics, writers and journalists. There are also shorter art and film reviews, as well as poems and a lively letters page.
A typical issue moves through political commentary to science or ancient history by way of literary criticism and social anthropology. So, for example, an issue can open with a piece on the rhetoric of war, move on to reassessing the reputation of Pythagoras, follow that with articles on the situation in Iraq, the 19th-century super-rich, Nabokov’s unpublished novel, how saints got to be saints, the life and work of William Empson, and an assessment of the poetry of Alice Oswald.

Even a master like Mozart does not fall from the heavens. With all his divine genius, he was born into a particular environment and was decisively formed here from his childhood and youth.
"Mozart in Salzburg" makes the Composer's Salzburg years accessible to the senses. The 60-minute film illuminates Mozart's daily life and the political and historical circumstances. What did the young Mozart see in the streets and squares? What did he eat? How did he travel? What were his leisure activities like? What is more,
questions about his milieu will be thematically categorised: How did Mozart deal with the great authority figures: his father Leopold and the Archbishop Colloredo? How did he react to the Catholic norms? What moved the young genius to flee to Vienna?
And how did the years in Salzburg form Mozart? With Daniel Barenboim, Gil Shaham, Angelika Kirchschlager, Martin Haselböck and others.

Hikaru no Go - Épisode 73 - Shindo contre Toya

- Performers: "Beaux Arts Trio": Menahem Pressler (piano), Ida Kavafian (violin), Peter Wiley (cello)
- Year of Recording: 1994
Piano Trio No. 2 in F minor, Op. 73, written in 1905.
00:00 - I. Allegro moderato
09:27 - II. Romanza. Andante
15:21 - III. Scherzo. Presto
22:09 - IV. Tema con variazioni. Allegro non troppo
Arensky displayed talent at an early age, studying under Rimsky-Korsakov, and teaching Rachmaninoff. But because of his reckless lifestyle of drinking and gambling, Arensky perhaps was not as successful a composer as he might have been, and these habits are believed to have led to his death at the age of forty-four. A contemporary and friend of Tchaikovsky, Anton Arensky's music also reveals the influence of other 19th-century Romantic composers, such as Chopin, Liszt, and Mendelssohn
- The piano trio opens with a serpentine theme which winds its way throughout the first movement with force and consistency. The theme is repeated, fragmented, and varied, serving to unify the movement while simultaneously providing a base for variation within the repeated sections. The movement revisits the opening figure several times, closing with a frantic chase to the closing cadence.
- The second movement begins with a warm introduction by the violin and cello of the piano, which introduces the theme in a Chopinesque solo passage. The other instruments join in, and gradually, the sweetness found in the solo passage is replaced by a more somber and gray treatment of the theme. Several times, the warm opening tries to return, but is soon interrupted by the darker passages. The movement ends with a final return of the delicate opening, in an effort to provide a happy ending to the narrative.
- The Scherzo provides a mischievously playful respite from the more serious previous movements, recalling the Scherzo of Arensky's first piano trio.
- The finale presents a theme and variations, each progressively becoming more fresh and full of personality, including a playful fourth variation, a reflective, waltz-like fifth variation, and a passionate final variation which explodes with Romantic energy and drama. The movement ends with a more calm, introspective return to the original theme.
The piece is dedicated to Gustav Geize [

20 Years Peaceful Revolution - Leipzig commemorates the 9th of October 1989
Gewandhausorchester Leipzig
Conductor: Kurt Masur
Johannes Brahms - Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73
0:28 I. Allegro non troppo
16:15 II. Adagio non troppo
25:48 III. Allegretto grazioso
31:26 IV: Allegro con spirito
On 9 October 1989, 70,000 people staged a non-violent demonstration calling for more freedom and democracy in the GDR. Thanks to the claim “Peaceful Revolution”, initiated by Kurt Masur as one of six prominent citizens of Leipzig, everything proceeded peacefully. That evening, the Gewandhausorchester played under his baton Brahms’ Second Symphony at the St. Nicolas Church. The following regular "Monday Demonstrations", which came to be described as the “Peaceful Revolution”, became a major milestone on the way to open the Berlin Wall one month later on November the 9th in 1989 and paving the foundations for the reunification of the two German states.
Exactly 20 years later, the Gewandhausorchester and Kurt Masur commemorate the beginning of the German reunification by presenting the same symphony at the same location.
