Iraq Baghdad Wrap News 2003
A large weapons cache has been uncovered close to the Palestine Hotel where many western journalists have been staying in Baghdad.
The cache was said to have ben pointed out to coalition troops by local people and the building is understood to have been a regular house used by the Iraqi military.
The building has since been looted by locals.
It has now been seized by the US military who are expected to bulldoze it or blow it up.
The Iraqi capital remains tense with sporadic fire and heavy military presence around the Palestine Hotel.
Meanwhile the first Catholic mass has been celebrated in Baghdad since the city fell.
Up to one hundred people attended the service at the Church of Virgin Mary Karada in central Baghdad.
Also in central Baghdad Iraqis met to start rebuilding their city and its infrastructure.
A handful of US Marine civil affairs officers had summoned groups of Iraqi water electrical and police civil servants to the Palestine Hotel where US forces more or less have set up a base.
The hotel was packed with civilians along with members from the old regime who were keen to restore some sense of order and government to Iraq.
At an initial briefing the civilians were told by one of the Iraqi organisers that all the other major cities in the country have been liberated and were now looking to Baghdad as to the way forward.
But one participant found it difficult to work with those who had belonged to Saddam Hussein s government. The man shouted at police officers who were at the meeting saying We don t need you...you are full of wrong-doing.
Tensions were also high outside the hotel where a group of civilians had gathered.
Despite the tensions Iraqi civil servants at the meeting divided themselves into groups based on their specific skills as the first step in restoring structure to a city and country in chaos.
Meanwhile the Iraqi Trade Ministry was in flames as looting continued in pockets of Baghdad - with the people expressing their hatred of all the former symbols of power.
Close to the burning building a US Marine division captured a small group believed to be Saddam s Fedayeen fighters.
The PoW s were interrogated by the American soldiers as they sat handcuffed and blindfolded on the ground.
Marines also discovered a cache of rifles rocket propelled grenades and bazookas.

The funerals of some of the over 70 people killed in a double suicide bomb attack in Baghdad on Saturday have begun to take place.
The victims were attending a funeral in a tent in the Shi'ite Muslim stronghold of Sadr City. At least 120 mourners were also injured.
The explosions caused a large fire, sending a plume of thick black smoke over the Iraqi capital.
No group has claimed responsibility for the blasts.
Less than two hours after the funeral attack, Baghdad residents were shaken by a car bomb blast in the Ur district of the city. At least nine people were killed and over a dozen injured.
Political and religious leaders in Iraq have appealed for calm in the country. Earlier this week, Shia, Sunni and Kurdish political heads signed an "honour pact" against the increasingly violent situation.
More than 500 people have been killed so far this month in Iraq and more than 4,300 since the beginning of the year.

Iraq Baghdad Wrap 3 News 2003
US troops stormed into the heart of Baghdad on Monday and took control of one of Saddam Hussein s presidential palaces on the Tigris River.
US troops entered Baghdad early on Monday with more than 70 tanks and 60 Bradley fighting vehicles under cover of tank-busting A10 aircraft.
A few hours later US Marines entered from the east of the city after incurring heavy fire on the outskirts of the city.
Iraqi officials remained defiant in the capital on Monday morning where crowds of Iraqis gathered to show continuing support for president Saddam Hussein.
In one such meeting a crowd of policemen and members of the public chanted support for Saddam outside the Palestine Hotel where most foreign journalists in the city are staying.
Later in the day journalists were taken to the al-Kindi Teaching Hospital in north-west Baghdad by Iraqi officials.
They were shown many people who said they were injured by recent coalition attacks on the city.
Most of the injured suffered from gun shot wounds burns and shrapnel. One official at the hospital said at least 75 wounded civilians had been brought there during the day.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said Monday that overwhelmed hospitals in Baghdad are running out of drugs and anesthetics and are short of water and electricity.
Iraqi officials on Monday said that two civilian neighbourhoods in Baghdad had been hit by missiles.
The alleged attacks took place in the Al Mansour and Al Benook neighbourhoods.
Local people said civilians had been killed in the attacks which one man described as a residential area full of children and normal civilians.

Iraq Baghdad News 2004
A spokesman for militant cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called on workers in Baghdad to observe a curfew from 1300 local time 0900 GMT.
The call comes after several days of fighting in the city.
Al-Sadr spokesman Qais al-Ghazali told reporters Tuesday that Iraqis and civilian workers should stay at home and support the militants who have been fighting in heavy battles against coalition forces in the last few days.
Al-Ghazali also warned the Iraqi Army and Iraqi Police to not be tools in the hands of the invaders.
The al Mahdi Army militiamen in Baghdad kidnapped a senior Iraqi policeman Brigadier Raed Mohammed Khudair who is responsible for all police patrols in eastern Baghdad said Colonel Adnan Abdel Rahman an Interior Ministry spokesman.
In a video broadcast on the pan-Arab network Al-Jazeera militants said the government should release all al Mahdi Army prisoners in exchange for Khudair.
The Iraqi government on Monday imposed a night time curfew in Baghdad s mainly Shi ite Muslim neighbourhood of Sadr City.
Also in Baghdad a US humvee was seen burning by the roadside close to the former UN headquarters.
It was not known what caused the fire or if there were any injuries but humvees and other military vehicles regularly come under attack from militants around the Iraqi capital.
