Gran Via (Barcelona)

Gran Via (Catalan pronunciation: [ˈɡɾam ˈbi.ə]) is the second major business district of Barcelona, after Diagonal Mar. Part of Fira de Barcelona, second largest trade fair and exhibition centres in Europe. Lies on borderline of Barcelona, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and El Prat de Llobregat. Gran Via business center consists some parts: Gran Via with 240,000 m² of exhibition floor space divided into 8 pavilions,Gran Via Convention Centre, with a capacity of 5,600 delegates and 14,000 m² surface area, skyscrapers alongside Plaza de Europa, with over ten skyscrapers and Gran Vía 2 near Barcelona International Airport, shop center propertied 200 shops, 20 restaurants, 15 cinemas and hypermarket. Also, it adjacent to Ciutat de la Justícia de Barcelona i l'Hospitalet de Llobregat, hosts most of the legal departments of the Barcelona metropolitan area.

Public transport

The "Gran Via" center is served by line 8 of the Barcelona Metro and FGC commuter train network, at the Europa-Fira station, and also by the bus line 79.

Gran Vía (Madrid)

Gran Vía (literally "Great Way") is an ornate and upscale shopping street located in central Madrid. Today the street is known as the Spanish Broadway, and is one of the streets with the most nightlife in Europe. It is known as the street that never sleeps. It leads from Calle de Alcalá, close to Plaza de Cibeles, to Plaza de España.

The lively street is one of the city's most important shopping areas, with a large number of hotels and large movie theatres, however in recent times many of these theatres are being replaced by shopping centres. The street is also noted for the grand architecture of many of the buildings.

It is considered a showcase of early 20th-century architecture, with patterns ranging from Vienna Secession style, Plateresque, Neo-Mudéjar, Art Deco and others.

History

In the mid 19th century, Madrid's urban planners decided that a new thoroughfare had to be created, connecting the Calle de Alcalá with the Plaza de España. The project required many buildings in the centre of the city to be demolished, earning it the name of 'an axe blow on the map'. Decades after the first plans were made, construction still hadn't started and the media ridiculed the project, cynically calling it the 'Gran Vía' or 'Great Road'. Finally in 1904 it was approved and construction started a couple of years later. The last part of the street was completed in 1929.

Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes

Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, more simply known as Gran Via, is one of Barcelona's major avenues. With a length of 13.1 kilometres, it is the longest street in Catalonia and the 2nd longest in Spain, after Gran Vía de la Manga, in La Manga del Mar Menor, but is the one with more street numbers in Spain.

Location

It crosses the entire city proper, stretching from the North-Eastern boundaries of the municipality, bordering Sant Adrià de Besòs, to its South-Western limits, in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, with some of Barcelona's most important squares in between: Plaça d'Espanya, Plaça Universitat, Plaça de Catalunya, Plaça de Tetuan and Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes. It's over thirteen kilometres long.

History

The late 19th century urban planner Ildefons Cerdà included it as an essential part of his draft of the new "Projecte de reforma i eixample de Barcelona" (nowadays simply known as "Pla Cerdà"), as a wide road linking a number of villages around the coastal part of Barcelona, and called it Lletra N, Número 11. It was renamed Corts in 1900, as a reference to the Medieval and Early Modern Catalan Courts. Later on, after the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed in 1931, it was again renamed as Corts Catalanes. With the Francoist victory after the Civil War, its name was changed to Avenida de José Antonio Primo de Rivera in 1939. With the restoration of democracy, its name became Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes in 1979.
