South Korean soap operas more popular than telenovelas in Cuba
Television soap operas from South Korea have found an unlikely audience among Cubans. Korean soaps, with their low-key mix of humor, drama and romance, now attract larger audiences than more traditional Latin American "telenovelas" from Brazil and Mexico. CCTV America's Michael Voss reported this story from Havana.

Representatives from the Cuban, DPR Korean and Venezuelan Embassies discuss the meaning of their struggles, and the contemporary situation in their countries.
Each of these countries, stands on the front line of the anti-imperialist struggle, and delivers a message of solidarity from their anti-imperialist, progressive and socialist movements, peoples and governments.
British workers have much to learn from the workers of these countries about how to build and maintain a movement for social emancipation.
Harpal Brar introduces the speakers, who addressed the CPGB-ML's international BBQ, held at Saklatvala Hall in Southall, west London, on Saturday 25 July : Jorge Luis Garcia, Councillor of the Cuban Embassy; Hyon Hak Bong, the DPR Korean ambassador to the UK; and Helena Menéndez, press secretary of the Venezuelan Embassy, who spoke on behalf of their governing parties.
The North Korean ambassador, having just returned from Pyongyang, gave a direct answer and firm rebuff to the US's increased demands that the people of the DPRK agree to give up their nuclear weapons and disarm.
In view of the fact that US imperialism invaded and committed the genocidal murder of 4 million men women and children on Korean soil within living memory, continues to press ceaselessly upon the people and government of North Korea; that it is armed to the teeth with conventional and nuclear weapons stationed in the South of Korea, Japan, the Pacific and other regional and international sites; and that the US continues to militarily occupy the south, it would be a dereliction of duty on the part of the North Koreans to give up their weapons.
The US not only has a clear first strike nuclear policy, it has explicitly named North Korea as a first strike target! This is the context also of the psychological warfare that the US and imperialist media run incessantly to defame the DPR Korea as a violator of 'human rights'.
https://redyouthuk.wordpress.com/2014/08/01/dprk-propaganda-war-a-cavalcade-of-comedy/
In view of the US' own clear record of human rights violations in the US and world-wide, it is testimony to the power of the US imperialist media that any credence whatever is given to this campaign of hypocritical lies and slanders.
The meeting was packed with supporters and party comrades of the CPGB-ML, who were also addressed by Keith Bennett, as the principle speaker for the party.
All of the speakers contributions will shortly be made available.
Workers of all countries unite - we have nothing to loose but our chains; we have a world to win!

Businesses around the world have a newly found interest in Cuba after the U.S. government recently announced it was lifting its decades-old embargo on Havana.
Seoul is pushing local exporters to take advantage of the opportunity to trade with Cuban entrepreneurs and the Cuban government without restrictions or crippling regulations.
Song Ji-sun reports.
From accessories and telecom devices to electronics and autos.
Those are some of the items Korean exporters could soon be sending over to Cuba a market that is soon to be given a strong boost after the U.S. announced its plan to lift its decades-old embargo.
An estimate by the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency suggests that foreign direct investment to Cuba will jump 17-times from the current one-billion dollars... to 17 billion dollars when the U.S. sanctions are completely removed.
Seoul′s outbound shipments to Havana stood at 56-million dollars last year,... while imports stood at 12-million dollars.
KOTRA says Korean companies could use the Cuban market as a bridge to enter Central and South America,... but cautions they should also be aware of the rigid government regulations there... as well as the lack of liquidity among prospective partner companies in the island nation.
To hedge against the risks... Seoul is taking practical steps to help exporters explore the new business opportunities.
The Korea Trade Insurance Corporation on Monday signed an MOU with Cuba′s central bank to provide 70-million dollars in trade insurance to Korean companies seeking to export their products.
In its bid to re-establish diplomatic ties with Cuba after more than five decades,... Seoul is also offering humanitarian aid to Havana,... engaging in a development program for the country for the first time.
Earlier this week, Seoul′s foreign ministry signed an MOU with the UN World Food Program... for a 3-million dollar project aimed at improving food production output and reducing poverty in Cuba by 2017.

The US reported that North Korea mistreated prisoners of war: soldiers were beaten, starved, put to forced labor, marched to death, and summarily executed.
The KPA killed POWs at the battles for Hill 312, Hill 303, the Pusan Perimeter, and Daejeon—discovered during early after-battle mop-up actions by the UN forces. Later, a US Congress war crimes investigation, the United States Senate Subcommittee on Korean War Atrocities of the Permanent Subcommittee of the Investigations of the Committee on Government Operations reported that "... two-thirds of all American prisoners of war in Korea died as a result of war crimes."
Although the Chinese rarely executed prisoners like their Korean counterparts, mass starvation and diseases swept through the Chinese run POW camps during the winter of 1950--51. About 43 percent of all US POWs died during this period. The Chinese defended their actions by stating that all Chinese soldiers during this period were suffering mass starvation and diseases due to the lack of competent logistics system. The UN POWs, however, disputed the claim by pointing out that most of the Chinese camps were located near the easily supplied Sino-Korean border, and that starvation was used to force the prisoners to accept the communism indoctrinations programs, which were running in full swing after the starvation was over.
The North Korean Government reported some 70,000 ROK Army POWs; 8,000 were repatriated. South Korea repatriated 76,000 Korean People's Army POWs. Besides the 12,000 UN Command forces POWs dead in captivity, the KPA might have press-ganged some 50,000 ROK POWs into the North Korean military. Per the South Korean Ministry of Defense, there remained some 560 Korean POWs detained in North Korea in 2008; from 1994 until 2009, some 79 ROK POWs escaped the North.
The North Korean Government denied having POWs from the Korean War, and, via the Korean Central News Agency, reported that the UN forces killed some 33,600 KPA POWs; that on 19 July 1951, in POW Camp No. 62, some 100 POWs were killed as machine-gunnery targets; that on 27 May 1952, in the 77th Camp, Koje Island (now in Geoje), the ROK Army incinerated with flamethrowers some 800 KPA POWs who rejected "voluntary repatriation" south, and instead demanded repatriation north.
In December 1950, National Defense Corps was founded, the soldiers were 406,000 drafted citizens. In the winter of 1951, 50,000 to 90,000 South Korean National Defense Corps soldiers starved to death while marching southward under the Chinese offensive when their commanding officers embezzled funds earmarked for their food. This event is called the National Defense Corps Incident.

Freedom guardians who risked their lives to help injured soldiers
Arirang TV has prepared a program about nurses and nursing officers who took care of wounded soldiers and civilians during the war on the Korean Peninsula. Their devotion and warm hearts made them the unsung heroines of the Korean War.
The devotion and love of white angels
These people risked their lives to save the lives of soldiers, who were like family to them. They put the soldiers′ needs ahead of their own, and did their utmost to help the wounded survive and recover. Even after half a century these nurses still cry.
Efforts of nursing officers dispatched worldwide
When the Korean War broke out, many countries sent their troops to help Korea. But the troops didn′t come alone - they were accompanied by nurses and nursing officers. Six nations including India, Italy and Norway sent their medics. The United States, which dispatched the most troops, also sent more than 500 nursing officers. The American nursing officers had to work under the same conditions as soldiers.
After the soldiers left following the cease-fire, the nurses stayed.
Their devotion continued even after the war.
After the Korean War, the Republic of Korea was completely ruined. Most of the soldiers returned to their home countries, but the nurses stayed in Korea. To them, the war was not over yet. They stayed to take care of wounded soldiers and war orphans. They believed that their duty was to help Koreans regain stability as soon as possible.
Korean nursing officers who carry on the spirit of Florence Nightingale in the world′s war zones
Sixty years after the end of the Korean War, Korea, a country with a tragic history, is contributing to establishing peace around the world. Korean nursing officers visit disputed regions in various parts of the globe to carry on the spirit of Florence Nightingale, just like the nursing officers from other countries did during the Korean War.

Cde Jorge Luis Garcia, Councillor of the Cuban Embassy, speaks to a packed meeting organised by the CPGB-ML to mark the 62nd anniversary of the storming of the Moncada barracks and the victory of the Korean people over the aggressive invasion and occupation of their country in 1953.
Cde Jorge points out that this year has seen some changes in Cuba's position. He thanks the CPGB-ML and British progressive workers for their support in pressurising the US government to release the Cuban 5, and the meeting celebrated the fact of their release and their world tour to meet progressive peoples and governments in Africa and Latin America.
The Cuban representative also notes that while there is a thawing of relations, and re-establishment of dialogue with the USA, the Obama administration remains the 11th successive US regime that seeks to overthrow the Cuban revolutionary government, and still maintains the illegal blockade, despite the overwhelming world sentiment, often expressed at the UN, that it must end this criminal action.
Our chief demand must be to demand the lifting of the Blockade, and the removal of US troops from the illegally occupied part of Cuba, and the closing of USA's torture camp, naval and military base at Guantanamo Bay.
Harpal Brar introduces the speakers, who addressed the CPGB-ML's 'international BBQ', held at Saklatvala Hall in Southall, west London, on Saturday 25 July.
The meeting was packed with supporters and party comrades of the CPGB-ML, who were also addressed by representatives of the Korean and Venezuelan governments and peoples, and Keith Bennett, as the principle speaker for the party.
All of the speakers contributions will shortly be made available.

Based on a study of the propaganda produced in North Korea for internal consumption, Myers argues that the guiding ideology of North Korea is a race-based nationalism derived from Japanese fascism, rather than any form of Communism.

This year marks the 90th year since Koreans first began settling in the Caribbean nation of Cuba. Descendents of those first immigrants have embarked on a search for their identity.

A single-story building situated in a residential neighborhood is a newly opened Korean cultural center.
[Soundbite] "Hello."
The center offers a glimpse into the lives of some 300 Henequens, or Koreans who moved to Cuba some 90 years ago. Henequens is a nickname for Koreans who immigrated to Mexico in the early 20th century. Their lives were hard, harvesting agave all day long. Their first passports and ID cards tell of their expectations and anxieties at the time.
[Soundbite] Oh Byeong-mun(Head, Korean Communities in CA & Caribbean) : "The center aims to teach the descendants about Korea's culture, history and hangeul in order to establish their identities and national perspectives."
Opening the center wasn't easy. In order to obtain an opening permit from Cuba, a country with no diplomatic ties with South Korea, the center had to be named after a Cuban national hero.
[Soundbite] Pablo Park Kim(3rd Generation Korean-Cuban) : "I hope Korean descendants come here and feel Korea's economic growth. This was not born accidentally. It's a product of our hard work."
Currently, ethnic Koreans living in Cuba number about 1,100. They were born in the socialist country of Cuba and enjoyed successful lives as public officials and professors. Yet they have never forgotten their proud Korean heritage. They published a book on the sorrowful yet inspiring lives of their parents.
[Soundbite] Marta Lim(2nd Generation Korean-Cuban) : "My generation still feels some longing for Korea, which I want to pass down to my descendants."
And they even erected a monument in the village where their ancestors first settled.

The Cleanest Race: How North Koreans See Themselves and Why it Matters is a 2010 book by Brian Reynolds Myers. Based on a study of the propaganda produced in North Korea for internal consumption, Myers argues that the guiding ideology of North Korea is a race-based nationalism derived from Japanese fascism, rather than any form of Communism.
Brian Reynolds Myers was born in the United States and was educated on the graduate level in Germany.[1] He is an editor of The Atlantic magazine and the author of A Reader's Manifesto,[2] as well as of Han Sorya and North Korea Literature (1994), which was the only book in English about North Korean literature until Tatiana Gabroussenko's literary history Soldiers on the Cultural Front (2010). Myers has studied North Korea for twenty years and is fluent in Korean.[3] He holds an assistant professorship in international studies at Dongseo University in South Korea.[2]
For the book, Myers studied North Korean mass culture with reference to domestically published novels, films, and serials available at the Ministry of Unification in Seoul.[3][4] Myers claims his analysis differs from that of conventional North Korea watchers, because he focuses on internal Korean-language propaganda, rather than on Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) external broadcasts and English-language reports from South Korea.
The Cleanest Race is divided into two sections: the first covers North Korean history through its propaganda, from Korea under Japanese rule to the 2009 imprisonment of American journalists by North Korea.[6] The second section analyzes themes in the propaganda, including chapters such as "Mother Korea", Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, perceptions of foreigners, and South Korea.[5]
Techniques of propaganda analysis by Myers include translation of poems, discussion of metaphors and monumental architecture, and description of racist tropes.[6] The book also contains sixteen separate pages of color illustrations,[5] including reprints of posters that ethnically caricature Japanese and Americans[7] and which portray the late leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il as maternal figures.[8]
The Cleanest Race argues that the ideology of the North Korean government's is founded on far-right politics rather far-left politics. It notes that the North Korean government is xenophobic and militaristic. It cites a report of a mob attack on Black Cuban diplomats and the forcing of female North Koreans to abort mixed children.[4][7] It says that the 2009 North Korean constitution omits all mention of Communism.[7] The author argues that Juche is not the leading ideology of North Korea. Rather, he surmises, it was designed in order to trick foreigners.[4]
The author says North Korea's government does not base its ideology on Marxism–Leninism or Neo-Confucianism. He instead links it to Japanese fascism.[9] He states that the government's racist criteria for national identity paints its genetically Korean citizens as innocent and morally virtuous (as opposed to foreigners) but militarily weak,[6] requiring Kim Il Sung's charismatic guidance and protection.[3] The author supposes that this may be a strategy by the government to decrease the amount of repression and surveillance needed to control that public.[3]
According to Myers, North Korean government propaganda portrays South Korea as a land polluted by foreign domination, particularly by the permanent presence of American troops. Anti-Americanism is the cornerstone of North Korean foreign policy.[4]
Similarly, internal propaganda within North Korea portrays American humanitarian efforts such as food aid as signs of American cowardice and make no distinction "between 'good' American workers and 'bad' American capitalists".[3] He laments that North Koreans openly flout the "dictates of an impure world" as inapplicable to the pure Korean race.

As the US looks towards lifting its trade embargo on Cuba, two American farmers return to where they befriended Fidel Castro over a decade ago. How did the brothers, aged 11 and 13, break the 40-year-old freeze?
"He's the coolest world leader we've ever met", laughs Ralph Kaehler, a fourth generation farmer from Minnesota and father to brothers Seth and Cliff. He and his family fight back tears as they watch grainy footage of Fidel Castro delivering his historic 2002 speech. "We are already negotiating with the future generation of American farmers", says Castro as he reaches to his side and embraces the two young American boys. And indeed a deal was done with the boys' father, making the first US cattle trade with Cuba since Castro's Revolution. Thirteen years on and the entrepreneurial Kaehlers are returning to Cuba to crank up business again, as Cubans await the lift of the stifling trade ban. "We now see hope in showing our talent to the world", says one Cuban reveller, who hopes to benefit from the embargo lift.

With one click I found myself in Bristol, ahem yes, a little person in the midst of a crowd of British people. But not only British people; also Japanese, Spanish, Brazilian, Korean, Swiss, Italian, Colombian, Chinese, Panamanian, Arabian, Cuban, African, Chilean, Polish, Kazakh and many other cultures!
I spent an extraordinary month with wonderful people! People who opened me their heart, made me discover and learn many things about their culture, and shared me their lust for life. It was a very enriching experience. Thanks EF, but above all, a big thank you to my parents and my brother who helped me achieve this wonderful and unforgettable journey.
Ps : Very sorry for moving a lot in the video.
