12th Annual Archives Lecture: Jeannette A Bastian
Islands, specifically the former colonial islands of the Caribbean and the Pacific, share many similar archival and records issues. Questions around the repatriation and custody of colonial documents mingle with the archiving and preserving of the oral and performative records of indigenous communities. Drawing on her own island experiences, Jeannette Bastian explores the concept of a cultural archives as a fruitful and productive path towards the documentation of these dynamic island communities. Jeannette A Bastian is a Professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Simmons College, Boston where she directs their archives education program. She was Territorial Librarian of the United States Virgin Islands 1987 to 1998 and received her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in 1999. She has published widely in the areas of collective memory, post-colonialism and archives education. Her books include Owning Memory: How a Caribbean Community Lost Its Archives and Found Its History (2003), Archival Internships (2008), and Community Archives: The Shaping of Memory (2009).- published: 11 Oct 2013

Guadeloupe Seen by its Colonists / Guadeloupe vue par ses Colons (1925)
Guadeloupe Seen by its Colonists / Guadeloupe vue par ses Colons (1925)
Originally conceived as a film about the geological wonders of one of France's colonies, from a 21st- century viewpoint what makes this little documentary interesting is the elephant in the room -- what isn't mentioned. Everything is shown from the point of view of the French colonists. The conflicts between Britain and France about parts of its territory are discussed, but not the way in which it was wrested from the Carib Native Americans, whose land it originally was. Nor do African slaves or their descendents rate the slightest mention. Its viewpoint can be deduced from the pretty pictures of colonists in their Sunday best, enjoying their excursions. I wish the print were in better condition, but you can see that it has been scratched and torn by heavy usage. I like to imagine it coming out year after year in some French school in the 20s and 30s when the curriculum worked its way round to the Caribbean. Pathé Baby films were the first movie visual aids produced with a view to their being shown in the classroom, and it's hard to over-emphasise the impact they must have had. (The original source for the footage seems to be that used for Pathé-Revue no. 24, of 1925. The original title of the Pahté-Baby version was "Guadeloupe: Montagnes et Volcans".)
