Slavery in the Bible -- Explained
Slavery in the Bible -- Explained
Slavery in the Bible - Explained by Paul Ross Many skeptics condemn the Bible as a wicked and immoral book because of its references to slavery. However, the only problem with arguments against certain cultural practices of antiquity is that they're often misguided and contextually misinformed or just willfully dishonest and deceitful. Interpreting the past through present-day spectacles is fundamentally flawed in that the contextual and cultural milieu of the time is not incorporated into the final evaluation and criticisms. For example, in the cultural and societal biblical context of the ancient world, slavery and service were closely related. Moreover, the institution itself provided certain benefits and opportunities similar to the employer/employee relationships that we have today. In fact, the benefits for a good majority of these slaves/servants were so advantageous that when they were offered their freedom, they simply chose to stay. Putting aside for now the fact that the abolition of slavery in our modern times was almost solely and exclusively a Christian enterprise, it is still interesting to chart the history of abolitionism. The seeds of the abolition of slavery were sown right back when Jesus admonished those that were listening to him: to do unto others as you would have others do unto you (Luke 6:31). What's more the Apostle Paul -- under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit -- contributed greatly to the idea of ultimate emancipation when he made it very clear that: there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither SLAVE nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3: 28). For the record, it needs to be stated that slavery in the Biblical/Israeli context was not rooted or grounded in racism -- no particular race was singled out -- unlike the African/American drama. Slavery/service in the Biblical context was largely economical, similar to what we see in the employer/employee relationships of today. A very similar kind of 'slavery' is a part of our economic and legal system today in such things as: garnished wages, community service enforcements, parole reporting and the loss of liberties for individuals who have lost their freedom by virtue of time in prison. Moreover, the ancient world was similar to this, in that slavery was incorporated into the ancient world as a means of debt recovery and debt restitution. Now, anyone that understands the issue of slavery in the Old Testament writings will passionately interject at this point and raise the morally troubling issue in regard to Israel's invasion of other nations (and the subsequent slavery that followed these episodes). However, I think that we will understand this issue better when we understand that these kinds of military actions e.g. those that were carried out by the Israeli forces in the ancient world, were based upon a moral and just cause. They were a direct result of the demonstrable wickedness and depravity reflected in their cherished practice of child-sacrifice. These and other such horrific customs were a part of their superstitious and demonically driven customs. In fact, children were endlessly offered up on the fires of Molech as a brutal sacrificial appeasement to their blood-lusting god. The God who created the heavens and the earth had sent prophets to warn such nations but when these wicked practices continued unabated, God sanctioned military action against them. Many antagonists have an issue with the fact that the children of these military interventions were brought back to Israel as slaves. I think instead that we need to choose the "lesser of two evils" in this regard. In my estimation, slavery -- which included food, shelter and safety -- was better for these children than being thrown into the fearful sacrificial fires of Molech. What's more, which welfare agency would not intervene today if your neighbour were offering his children up on the fire of Molech? I think you know the answer. Having said all that, what really amuses and amazes me about the skeptics' passionate cry against the issue of slavery in the Bible, is that a large majority of these very same people will not even consider extending that same degree of ethical devotion to the present-day situation regarding abortion. This genocidal eradication of millions, of the yet to be born, is sacrificed on the societal fires of cultural convenience. That's right, ladies and gentlemen, the moral charge against the Bible is just another typical atheistic smokescreen that reveals the deceitful underlying motive of the skeptic to have a ground to reject the rule of God over their own life.- published: 12 Sep 2013
