The terms Old Lights and New Lights (among others) are used in Christian circles to distinguish between two groups who were initially the same, but have come to a disagreement. These terms have been applied in a wide variety of ways, and the meaning must be determined from context. Typically, if a denomination is changing, and some refuse to change, and the denomination splits, those who did not change are referred to as the "Old Lights", and the ones who changed are referred to as the "New Lights".
The terms were first used during the First Great Awakening, which spread through the British North American colonies in the middle of the 18th century.[citation needed] In A Faithful Narrative of the Surprising Work of God (1737), Jonathan Edwards, a leader in the Awakening, describes his congregants vivid experiences with grace as causing a "new light" in their perpective on sin and atonement. Old Lights and New Lights generally referred to Congregationalists and Baptists in New England who took different positions on the Awakening than the traditional branches of their denominations. New Lights embraced the revivals that spread through the colonies, while Old Lights were suspicious of the revivals (and their seeming threat to authority). Historian Richard Bushman credits the division between Old Lights and New Lights for the creation of political factionalism in Connecticut in the mid-eighteenth century. Often "many "new light" Congregationalists who had been converted under the preaching of George Whitefield left that connection to become "new light" Baptists when they found no evidence of infant baptism in the apostolic church, they left. When told of this development, Whitefield famously quipped that he was glad to hear about the fervent faith of his followers but regretted that "so many of his chickens had become ducks." Then they went off.New Side" and those opposed to the revivals called "Old Side."

They debuted in summer 2009 with their viral hit, "You're a Jerk", taken from their debut studio album Skinny Jeanz and a Mic, released in September 2009. The song peaked in the top thirty of the Billboard Hot 100, and it was the first song to bring the jerkin' style to the national forefront. A second single, "Tie Me Down" featuring Ray J, was also successful and peaked in the top thirty. In May 2011, their second studio album, Too Cool to Care, was released. The two were originally rivals, but became friends over a common interest in music. Dominic began rapping at the age of eight after watching a music video by Bow Wow, but Benjamin did not have plans to pursue a musical career, instead, he intended to play football at San Diego State University. However, Benjamin decided to focus more on music after he discovered that Dominic was achieving success in rapping. With their October birthdays only a day apart, they pooled their gift money to buy recording equipment. Dominic then taught himself how to make beats for the group's songs with a computer program called Fruity Loops, saying "I had to teach myself. We didn’t want to pay for beats." After Thomas transferred to a new school, they decided to form a group. With Benjamin being "Ben J" and Thomas being "Legacy", they began performing together as the Swagger Boyz on July 4, 2008. and created a MySpace page to promote their self-published single "Colorz". In 2009, New Boyz performed at a basketball game for Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills, CA.

The sound of breathing, the silence intense
The hearts are pounding, endlessly here
The wind tumbling steadily, traded between us
It becomes a wild and powerful strength
New Light
You took my wind, and gave me your wind
It passes between us, invisible, pure
The patterns in motion, the birds in their forms
The horizon is only a point on the map
New Light
The holy head dressed with feathers, and howling
The mother protects the young, and the worn
The clouded dusk drops, the burning sun cracks
The natural world reinvents itself
And turning the wheel, the iron fears crying
The walls moan and sing as they shift in the wind
The night is a prayer that beckons the dawn
Hopeful and patient for new light to come
