Comet ISON Enters The Field of View of the Solar and Heliophysics Observatory (SOHO) (1/2) [HD]
ISON enters the field of view of the joint ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO, spacecraft's C3 coronograph, where the brighter view of the sun itself is blocked to focus on the solar atmosphere, or corona. NASA | The 2003 Mercury Transit From Solar and Heliophysics Observatory (SOHO) [HD]
Since SOHO in its halo orbit was a bit "ahead" of Earth at the time, Mercury's shadow caught up with SOHO a little later than with observers on Earth. The transit itself started at 7.48 UT and ended at 13.16 UT; Mercury was, however, visible in EIT images against the extended corona for some hours before and after. Although our webserver was crumbling under the huge number of requests, the event was not just good PR - three instruments made a series of special observations: MDI took a series of full disk continuum images at varying focus positions during the entire transit, in order to better determine absolute spacecraft roll and MDI absolute plate scale, and to better understand MDI image distortion. The varying focus positions are what causes the Sun to "breathe", or "pulsate" in size, in the movie. CDS took a wide variety of observations (wide slit movies, narrow slit rasters, and narrow slit sit-and-stare sequences). One of the aims is to better characterize the three-dimensional (wavelength, X and Y) point spread function of the optics. EIT took series of images in all four wavelengths, to improve models of stray light and their flatfielding. Credit: ESA&NASA;/SOHO/GSFC Comet Ison Latest News! 11/28/2013 NASA's STEREO-A spacecraft continues to observe Comet ISON as it approaches the sun. This movie from the spacecraft's Heliospheric Imager shows Comet ISON, Mercury, Comet Encke and Earth over a five day period from Nov. 20 to Nov. 25, 2013. The sun sits right of the field of view of this camera. This is the full-resolution, full field-of-view. It covers the same time period as the video above and has a time stamp. Credit: NRL/NASA STEREO/CIOC. Heliophysics Credit: Nathan Rich/NRL/NASA STEREO/CIOC. 11-28-2013 5.00 pm EST: The Comet Ison did not make, but I am glad we have these great images of the Ison comet recorded and posted online from NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. ISON survived the grazing of the sun which I can't imagine it could have, but I'm no expert and the expert astronomers believed it could go either way. I am very excited it's "alive" as the information was very random about the Ison comet, which was touted as the "comet of the century". First reports were that it didn't survive the orbit around the sun. The Nova special claimed the comet would be hitting the sun on the 29th of November. I was planning my viewing around that information. Turns out that it was on Thanksgiving day which was the first clear day we have had in central Virginia since the viewing was supposed to be most brilliant. I missed the comet all week waiting for Friday, the 29th. The local news hardly mentioned this "Comet of the century". That's was hard to believe since there was so much talk about Hale Bop comet and Halley's Comet.
