On Wikipedia, vandalism is the act of editing the project in a malicious manner that is intentionally disruptive. Vandalism includes the addition, removal, or other modification of the text or other material that is either humorous, nonsensical, a hoax, or that is of an offensive, humiliating, or otherwise degrading nature.
Throughout its history, Wikipedia has struggled to maintain a balance between allowing the freedom of open editing and protecting the truth and accuracy of its information when false information can be potentially damaging to its subjects. Vandalism is easy to commit on Wikipedia because anyone can edit the site, with the exception of articles that are currently semi-protected, which means that new and unregistered users cannot edit them.
Vandalism can be committed by either guest editors or those with registered accounts; however, a semi-protected or protected page can only be edited by auto-confirmed or registered Wikipedia editors, or administrators, respectively. Frequent targets of vandalism include articles on hot and controversial topics, famous celebrities and current events. In some cases, people have been falsely reported as having died. This has notably occurred to United States Senators Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd (both of whom are now deceased), and American rapper Kanye West (who is not deceased).
Stephen Tyrone Colbert (/koʊlˈbɛər/, né: /ˈkoʊlbərt/; born May 13, 1964) is an American comedian, writer, producer, actor, media critic, and television host. He currently hosts the late-night television talk show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS.
Colbert had originally studied to be an actor, but became interested in improvisational theatre when he met Second City director Del Close while attending Northwestern University. He first performed professionally as an understudy for Steve Carell at Second City Chicago; among his troupe mates were comedians Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, with whom he developed the sketch comedy series Exit 57. Colbert also wrote and performed on the short-lived Dana Carvey Show before collaborating with Sedaris and Dinello again on the cult television series Strangers with Candy. He gained considerable attention for his role on the latter as closeted gay history teacher Chuck Noblet. His work as a correspondent on Comedy Central's news-parody series The Daily Show first introduced him to a wide audience.
Willard Mitt Romney (born March 12, 1947) is an American businessman and politician who served as the 70th Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007. Following his service as Governor, Romney was the Republican Party's nominee for President of the United States in the 2012 election.
Raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, by his parents George and Lenore Romney, Mitt Romney spent two and a half years in France as a Mormon missionary starting in 1966. He married Ann Davies in 1969, and they have five sons. By 1971, Romney had participated in the political campaigns of both of his parents. In that year, he earned a Bachelor of Arts at Brigham Young and in 1975, a joint Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration at Harvard. Romney then entered the management consulting industry and in 1977 secured a position at Bain & Company. Later serving as its chief executive officer, he helped lead the company out of financial crisis. In 1984, he cofounded and led the spin-off company Bain Capital, a highly profitable private equity investment firm that became one of the largest of its kind in the nation. Active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Romney served during his business career as the bishop of his ward (head of his local congregation) and then stake president in his home area near Boston. After stepping down from Bain Capital and his local leadership role in the church, he ran as the Republican candidate in the 1994 Massachusetts election for U.S. Senate. Upon losing to longtime incumbent Ted Kennedy, he resumed his position at Bain Capital. Years later, a successful stint as president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics led to a relaunch of his political career.
If Wikipedia is so prone to vandalism, how come it's so rare to see any? This video shows an example of a "bot" that reverts suspected vandalism as well as how popular pages are "locked" such that only certain editors can alter them.
http://www.videobash.com We know you can't vandalize the Nickelback page today, so here's every vandalism up until October 14, 2009.
Wikipedia, one of the largest reference sites is open to the public for editing. But now Virgil Griffith has created a new application for the free site, to allow users to see who has edited the page. Last year, reports showed that several big companies tweaked their own pages to only allow good things on the pages, so Virgil Griffith created WikiScanner. He directed us to the Maltastar page to view a list of vandalism on Wikipedia. We talked with Convergence and Broadband Blogger from ZDnet, Russell Shaw and the communications manager for the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., Sandy Ordonez to gain an insight. Kara Ratliff takes you through what makes this so fascinating.
I didn't think Stephen Colbert's vandalizing of Wikipedia made a difference to Mitt Romney in the 2012 Presidential Election. But it did. Who did you think Mitt Romney would pick as a Vice Presidential running mate? Marco Rubio? Tim Pawlenty? Sarah Michelle Geller? I didn't think it'd be Paul Ryan. Did you? Find out how Stephen Colbert's Wikipedia vandalism drove this choice. Get Smart Fast with the Meme Factory. Want to see more of the Meme Factory? This one was a toughie when it came to the warning, since it's a shared IP. In this case, I noted a considerably long warning history, but only a few from this month, and none of them from the past several days. There's a good chance this user was unrelated to the others, depending on the nature of this workstation, so a slightly stern but not too unwelcoming warning seems appropriate here.
Although Wikipedia is known to be pro-NASA in general, it usually just echos the erroneous counter-claims of propagandists and leaves it at that. Occasionally, however, some troll will vandalize Wikipedia by using it express their emotionally dysfunctional hatred against their opponents. Recently, a certain propagandist has used such Wikipedia vandalism in an attempt to libel Ralph Rene and yours truly.
