Shindig! was created and produced by Jack Good who had previously produced rock 'n' roll TV shows in his native Britain. There, he perfected his style of fast-paced rock music programing. In 1962, Good produced a pilot for American TV. The pilot, titled "Young America Swings the World," eventually became the blueprint for Shindig! Most of the top American and British rock/pop acts of the mid-1960s appeared on Shindig!. The British performers often appeared in segments taped in the UK Shindig! was different from previous US rock 'n' roll programs. It featured non-stop music that, in most cases, was only interrupted by the commercial breaks. Shindig! started a trend in television which could probably best be described as "rock 'n' roll...with go-go dancers."

The original group was made up of seven members: vocalist Bruce Bowles, saxophonist Bobby Fisher, vocalist Jimmy Hart, trumpet player Jimmy Johnson, bassist Pat Neal, vocalist Larry Raspberry, and drummer Larry Wall. Their debut album, Keep on Dancing, climbed into the Top 100 due to the success of the title track. The group enjoyed minor success until 1966, when the band broke up. Originally, member Jimmy Hart decided to resurrect the band in 1969, now featuring himself on lead vocals. The band still had some minor success, but did not last long. Raspberry would go on to start several more garage and soul groups, while Hart became a popular wrestling character, the "Mouth of the South," and would write music for both the WWF and WCW wrestling organizations. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide

More Info: www.DonnaLoren.net - Donna Loren's live performance of "Shakin' All Over" with the Shindig Dancers aired on 7-7-65. This song was originally performed by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates. It was written by frontman Johnny Kidd and reached #1 in the United Kingdom in August 1960. The original recording was not a hit outside of Europe. Instead, "Shakin' All Over" gained fame in North America after The Guess Who covered it in 1965, where it was a #1 hit in Canada and a #22 hit in the US. Donna has re-recorded this song on her new CD "Love It Away", and you can view it at www.youtube.comDonna Loren was the one-and-only "Dr Pepper Girl" from 1963 to 1968. She was signed to a long-term contract with the soft-drink company to sing all television and radio commercials, do all magazine and billboard advertising representing them in every capacity, sometimes sharing the spotlight with American Bandstand's Dick Clark. This relationship led to her touring in Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars with other popular acts like Diana Ross and The Supremes and singing solos in the popular Beach Party films starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. The band's original lineup included Sal Valentino (lead vocals), Ron Elliott (lead guitar), Ron Meagher (bass guitar), Declan Mulligan (rhythm guitar, bass, harmonica), and John Petersen (drums). Although their initial musical style blended beat music and folk music and typically drew comparisons to The Beatles, the Beau Brummels later worked with other music genres such as psychedelic rock and country rock. The band broke into the mainstream with their debut single, "Laugh, Laugh," for which they would later be credited for setting the aesthetic foundation for the San Francisco Sound. Back in October of'65 ABC's Shindig! broadcast their Halloween episode and showed a clip of the Monster Mash performed by Boris Karloff. The clip was lost somehow, but with scenes from that show that still remain, I was able to assemble a music video of what it might have looked like. I've been searching for the Karloff clip for years, and until the original is found, this will have to do. Thanks to Jason at Scar Stuff for the great remix of the Monster Mash vocal by the GRRREAT Bobby Boris Pickett!

Apache Shindig: Make your Social Site an OpenSocial Container Dan Peterson (Google), Paul Lindner (hi5) and Chris Chabot (mijndomein.nl) Shindig is a new project in the Apache Software Foundation incubator and is an open source implementation of the OpenSocial specification and gadgets specification in multiple programming languages. The goal of Shindig is to make it easy for social sites to extend their functionality using the OpenSocial API, which makes it easier for developers to write to write those extensions. This session will explain what Shindig is, the server's architecture, the JavaScript and Java Service Provider Interfaces that developers can leverage to integrate Shindig with their social site, and the state of the Shindig ports to other languages (PHP, .NET, Ruby). We will do a live demonstration of how to integrate Shindig with an existing social site.
