(1962)[Plane Crash] NASA/USAF North American X-15 Crash Landing at Mud Lake, NV
Courtesy: NASA Langley Research Center Pilot Jack McKay On 9 November 1962, an engine failure forced Jack McKay, a NASA research pilot, to make an emergency landing at Mud Lake, Nevada, in the second X-15 (56-6671); its landing gear collapsed and the X-15 flipped over on its back. McKay was promptly rescued by an Air Force medical team standing by near the launch site, and eventually recovered to fly the X-15 again. But his injuries, more serious than at first thought, eventually forced his retirement from NASA. The aircraft was sent back to the manufacturer, where it underwent extensive repairs and modifications. It returned to Edwards in February 1964 as the X-15A-2, with a longer fuselage (52 ft 5 in) and external fuel tanks. Most of McKay's injuries were relatively minor; an abrasion to the back of his neck and right leg; a laceration of his left leg requiring stitches, and generalised muscular bruising of his back. These were easily attended to in hospital. However his biggest problem was that three vertebrae in his upper spine were compressed during the accident to the point where he lost an inch in height, which caused him considerable and chronic pain which not only changed his personality for the worse, but eventually cost him his life. -----Copyright/Permission--------- Per US Title 17, Chapter 1, § 105 . The North American X-15
The North American X-15 was a rocket-powered aircraft operated by the United States Air Force and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as part of the X-plane series of experimental aircraft. The X-15 set speed and altitude records in the early 1960s, reaching the edge of outer space and returning with valuable data used in aircraft and spacecraft design. As of 2013[update], the X-15 holds the official world record for the fastest speed ever reached by a manned aircraft. Its maximum speed was 4,520 miles per hour (7,274 km/h) (Mach 6.72). During the X-15 program, 13 different flights by eight pilots met the USAF spaceflight criterion by exceeding the altitude of 50 miles (80 km) thus qualifying the pilots for astronaut status. The USAF pilots qualified for USAF astronaut wings, while the civilian pilots were awarded NASA astronaut wings in 2005, 35 years after the last X-15 flight. Of all the X-15 missions, two flights (by the same pilot) qualified as space flights per the international (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) definition of a spaceflight by exceeding 100 kilometres (62.1 mi) in altitude.- published: 19 Sep 2013

North American X-15 Newsreel - 7/20/59
One of the earliest newsreels on the famed rocketship; in fact, the X-15 had only flown ONE time (Scott Crossfield's intial glide flight) when this reel was shown, hence all the CHEESY & COOL animation! As an interesting sidenote, Crossfield received a special award from the "National Soaring Association" for that intial "Dead stick flight": "Quickest time from 45,000 feet to the ground". :-) Be sure to check my channel for the BEST in VINTAGE & RARE airliner videos!
