List of UK Singles Chart number ones of the 1960s [Wikipedia Article]
The UK Singles Chart is the official record chart in the United Kingdom. Prior to 1969 there was no official singles chart; however, The Official Charts Company and Guinness' British Hit Singles & Albums regard the canonical sources as New Musical Express before 10 March 1960 and Record Retailer from then until 15 February 1969 when Retailer and the BBC jointly commissioned the British Market Research Bureau to compile the charts. The choice to use Record Retailer as the canonical source for the 1960s has been contentious because NME had the biggest circulation of periodicals in the decade and was more widely followed. As well as the chart compilers mentioned previously, Melody Maker, Disc and Record Mirror all compiled their own charts during the decade. Due to the lack of any official chart the BBC aggregated results from all these charts to announce its own Pick of the Pops chart. One source explains that the reason for using the Record Retailer chart for the 1960s was that it was "the only chart to have as many as 50 positions for almost the entire decade". The sample size of Record Retailer in the early 1960s was around 30 stores whereas NME and Melody Maker were sampling over 100 stores. In 1969, the first BMRB chart was compiled using postal returns of sales logs from 250 record shops.
In terms of number-one singles, The Beatles were the most successful group of the decade having seventeen singles reach the top spot. The longest duration of a single at number-one was eight weeks and this was achieved on three occasions: "It's Now or Never" by Elvis Presley in 1960; "Wonderful Land" by The Shadows in 1962 and "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies in 1969. The Beatles' song "She Loves You" became the best-selling single of all time in 1963, a record it held until 1977 when band member Paul McCartney's new band, Wings, surpassed it with "Mull of Kintyre". "She Loves You" was the best-selling song of the decade and one of fourteen songs believed to have sold over one million copies in the 1960s.
By artist
The following artists achieved three or more number-one hits during the 1960s. Cliff Richard achieved seven number ones; two solo and five with the Shadows. The Shadows had a total of ten number ones; five solo and five with Cliff Richard.
Million-selling and gold records
Although official music recording sales certifications were not introduced until the British Phonographic Industry was formed in 1973, Disc introduced an initiative in 1959 to present a gold record to singles that sold over one million units. Information about when a record was classified gold by Disc is "not well documented". The awards relied on record companies correctly compiling and supplying sales information. This could lead to errors, such as The Archies' "Sugar, Sugar" incorrectly being awarded a gold disc in January 1970. Such inaccuracies led to the instigation of official classifications by the BPI. Nevertheless, following the introduction of music downloads in 2004, "Sugar, Sugar" passed the one-million sales mark.
The Shadows instrumental, "Apache", is the first known song to being awarded Disc's gold record but it is disputed whether one million copies were sold. The awarding of fifteen gold records (one erroneously) is documented and, notably, five were awarded to releases by The Beatles. No song is believed to have sold one million copies after 1967 -- "The Last Waltz" by Engelbert Humperdinck -- and before BPI instigated its platinum record (still one million units) in 1973. Although The Righteous Brothers first released "Unchained Melody" in August 1965 it had more success after being re-released in the 1990s reaching number one and selling over million copies.

The founding father of the Hospital imprint and mouthpiece of the multi-award winning, chart topping Hospital podcast, London Elektricity is a name that should need no introduction. Since starting the label in 1996, Tony Colman has carved out a fearsome reputation as one of the pre-eminent names in D&B; and remains at the forefront of the scene to this day.
This incredible 12" release marks the first London Elektricity release for over two years and is the first single to be taken from his highly anticipated forthcoming album 'Yikes!' which is due out at the end of April. His last release 'All Hell Is Breaking Loose' stormed on to the Radio One playlist, proving his underground and overground credentials once again. A lot has changed since 2008's 'Syncopated City: 'this is my first release for 3 years, and features the vocals of Elsa Esmeralda who graced 'Just One Second' from my last album Syncopated City. Elsa features on 7 tracks on my new album 'Yikes', and I can safely say this is easily my best work to date. Yikes has been 2 years in the making, I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it! '
Sparse and minimal, 'Elektricity Will Keep Me Warm' is UK bass music at its most soulful and imaginative. A stripped down 'think' break, 808 subs and laconic piano chords drive the main tune along with an absolutely outstanding vocal performance from Elsa Esmarelda, whose previous London Elektricity collaboration "Just One Second" has become a massive Hospital anthem.
"The Plan That Cannot Fail" on the flip side is an awesome slice of instrumental d+b magic. Get ready for hands and lighters in the air as the tune builds and evolves into a heart-rending powerhouse, built around a rich piano progression and tripping breaks. Absolutely sublime.
London Elektricity continues to be one of the finest purveyors of forward thinking, ground-breaking music and this single is a testament to his ongoing success. As the mounting anticipation surrounding the release of his album builds, all eyes are firmly fixed on the Colminator as we enter spring 2011.

Lianne La Havas no longer needs any introduction; her trajectory has been well documented. Her name has become synonymous with beautiful, soulful, emotive songs about heartbreak. Aged 22, her debut album reached number 4 in the UK album charts, was nominated for this years Mercury Music Prize and she can now count Stevie Wonder, Prince, Erykah Badu, Bon Iver and Jill Scott as fans.
Lianne announces the release of a two-part video with Noisey.com and Essence.com for singles "Elusive" and "Gone". Director Colin Solal Cardo (La Blogotheque) said of their partnership:
"I've been collaborating with Lianne for more than a year now, but working on this project felt like something completely new. Lianne's a brilliant storyteller, there's a true cinematic quality to her songs. When you listen to them, you go through all these emotions and narratives, like a collection of short movies. We felt like it was finally time to build a world around these songs, give life to these love stories and let Lianne actually become these characters. Be it a candid young girl falling in love, or a heartbroken femme fatale in the middle of the woods. I feel fortunate for the trust relationship I have with Lianne, it's something any music video director has to cherish because it's rare and precious. Ultimately, that's what allows an ambitious project like this one to exist."

Homework, a duo based in Amsterdam, have been teasing everyone with a little track from their upcoming EP on Exploited called "Fissa Tune" to be released on July 2nd. Not much to say about this, except expect to hear it a lot this summer. This is extravagant dancefloor ammunition from "Exploited Records", kicking off with a title track that chops and splices samples of Middle Eastern pipes, klezmer-ish reeds and gulping vocal snippets. It hangs together in an effective, bass-warbling fashion.

Fissa Tune
Exploited (GER)
"A superb varied 4 track Ep of sounds and styles is what we have here. Already the title track is a bit of an underground hit, but pooled with 3 more impressive tracks, makes this release from Exploited Records very sought after. Expect to hear gypsy vibes, jackin house, 4/4 mashup stylee, cheeky blatant sampling and more. If you haven’t yet, do discover Exploited !!"
