Shite Guide to West Belfast: 1/2 - THE SHANKILL ROAD and Loyalist Murals
PART 1 of 2
In this episode we'll take a stroll down the most notorious street on the island of Ireland, The Shankill Road. The stronghold of Unionism in West Belfast it was at the at the epicentre of The Troubles, a 30 year long conflict in the north of Ireland which saw Belfast become the European Capital of Terrorism, with paramilitary attacks becoming a fact of daily life for decades.
The war is over but the segregation still remains.
We'll take a gander at the neighbourhood have a peep at paramilitary murals, sites of terror attacks, and check out the Peace Wall, a 5km fence which separates the Shankill from their neighbours in the Falls, the stronghold of Republicanism in the city. It's a pretty spicy situation.

One Month on the Shankill: Inside Belfast's loyalist community after NI's worst violence in years
Petrol bombs, fires, and bricks smashing windows - the riots in Belfast earlier this year was some of the worst violence ever seen in Northern Ireland for years.
Over several nights in April, cars were hijacked and loyalists - including children and teenagers - have vowed to resume protest action against post-Brexit trading arrangements.
The Northern Ireland protocol is so much more than the so-called "sausage wars", it has created new barriers and bureaucracy on trade between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.
In this extended eyewitness report, ITV News has spent a month speaking to people in the Shankill Road community, which is predominantly loyalist, about the riots, the anger, and the impact of the Northern Ireland protocol on their lives.

1984: Shankill Road Riots
On this day in 1984, ITN's Brent Sadler reported on the third night of rioting on the Shankill Road in West Belfast.
Protestant youths set fire to buildings, vehicles and attacked patrols of the RUC. The next day, loyalists marched down the Shankill in a peaceful demonstration.

The Shankill Road, a protestant stronghold, stretches around two miles through West Belfast. Nicholas Coffey and the ‘7 Days’ production team met the people that live on the Shankill Road to hear their stories of life in the loyalist stronghold.
