PARTING SHOTS: Active sunspot 1263, which just two days ago produced the most powerful solar flare of the new Solar Cycle (an X6.9), has left the Earthside of the sun. It is now beginning a two week transit across the solar farside. We can still see signs of its ongoing activity, however. Just this morning, an eruption hurled a bright CME over the sun's western limb: Solar wind flowing from a coronal hole should reach Earth on or about Aug. 14th. Credit: SDO/AIA.

Dark hole Sun: dense ionized wind stream burns Earth's magnetosphere February 1, 2011 -- It's here. The solar wind pouring from the large coronal hole on the Sun has hit earth and though the wind speed blast has not caused the magnetosphere to expand in its usual dramatic flaring fashion to protect the earth- it has instead ionized the shield. Proton density is 20.9 protons/cm3 in a wind helio-wind speed of 376.8 km/sec. That's high enough to have an ionized, searing effect of the planet's fledging protective barrier. This is one of the largest coronal holes we've seen on the Earth-facing hemisphere of the Sun in some time and its emitting a powerful blast of proton particles toward earth like a ray gun. The particle stream is so powerful, it's pushing the planet's magnetic field out almost as fast as it's being generated from its rotational spin. Looking at the pressure reading of the magnetosphere below, we can see this is a very high resolution burn at maximum intensity. VOLCANIC SUNSETS: South of the equator, gaseous fumes from Chile's erupting Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcano are painting the sky vivid shades of purple, gold, and red. "Ash has been blown around the world to our little island, and has resulted in some spectacular sunsets," reports Jason Reilly of Launceston, Tasmania. "The red glow lasts for well over an hour after the sun sets." Volcanic ash has also grounded dozens of flights in South America and Australia. Stranded travelers can take some consolation in the fantastic view.

July 15, 2011 -- CORONAL HOLE: A dark gap in the sun's atmosphere--a "coronal hole"--is spewing solar wind toward Earth. Estimated time of arrival: July 19th. This morning, UV-filtered telescopes onboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Obervatory photographed the opening: Coronal holes are places where the sun's magnetic field opens up and allows hot gas to escape. A million mile-per-hour stream of solar wind flowing from this hole could spark polar geomagnetic storms when it arrives early next week. Solar activity is low, NOAA ARs 1193 and 1190 are still growing in size and will continue to produce C-class flares and, less likely, M-class flares. There was a filament eruption around 23:30 UT in the south east limb. There is still too few data on the CME, but there seems to be an Earth directed component, most likely it will cause only a shock arrival around three days from now. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be quiet.

CORONAL HOLE: A dark croissant-shaped hole has opened up in the sun's atmosphere, and it is spewing a stream of solar wind into space. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture of the vast opening during the early hours of Jan. 30th: Researchers call this a "coronal hole." Solar rotation is turning the coronal hole toward Earth. The stream of solar wind pouring from it will swing around and hit our planet in early February, possibly sparking polar magnetic storms. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras between Feb. 2nd and 4th. The Sun is a big magnet. During solar minimum the Sun's magnetic field, like Earth's, resembles that of an iron bar magnet, with great closed loops near the equator and open field lines near the poles. Scientists call such a field a "dipole." The Sun's dipolar field is about as strong as a refrigerator magnet, or 50 gauss. Earth's magnetic field is 100 times weaker. During the years around solar maximum (2000 and 2001 are good examples) spots pepper the face of the Sun. Sunspots are places where intense magnetic loops -- hundreds of times stronger than the ambient dipole field -- poke through the photosphere. Sunspot magnetic fields overwhelm the underlying dipole; as a result, the Sun's magnetic field near the surface of the star becomes tangled and complicated. INCOMING CME? Newly-arriving data from NASA's STEREO probes suggest that a coronal mass ejection (CME) might be heading toward Earth. The source of the cloud appears to be sunspot complex 1185-1186, which experienced an episode of magnetic instability during the early hours of April 9th.
