Black Dyke Band, formerly Black Dyke Mills Band, is one of the oldest and best-known brass bands in the world. The band has won many prizes and competitions over the years. In 2009, the band won the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain for a record 22nd time.
It was formerly the band of the Black Dyke Mills in Queensbury, West Yorkshire, England, a company owned by John Foster. Foster, a French horn player, joined with others in a small brass and reed band in Queensbury in 1816. This band faltered, and another band formed - called the Queenshead Band - which consisted of 18 musicians around 1843. This second band also faltered, but in 1855, Foster and other musicians established the new mill band, and outfitted it with uniforms made from the mill's own cloth. Most of the musicians in the band also worked at the mill, and a close bond was fostered with the local community. The band has remained active since that time, and still rehearses in its original rooms.
Black Dyke was the first band to achieve the "Grand Slam" in 1985 by winning the Yorkshire regional, European, British Open and National Championship contests. They were also voted BBC Band of the Year.
Arfon Trevor Griffiths (born 23 August 1941) is a Welsh former football player and manager. During his playing career which lasted from 1959 to 1979, Griffiths played at both professional and international levels, before becoming a football manager.
Born in Wrexham, Griffiths was originally spotted in local junior football by former Wrexham player Frank Blew, who then alerted the club's manager Cliff Lloyd. He initially signed Griffiths on amateur forms in May 1957, as the youngster turned down offers of trials from both Liverpool and Sheffield Wednesday.[citation needed] This started a 22 year-long association between with Wrexham as both player and manager.
He made his first team in a 2-1 home win over Reading in November 1959, having been a member of the previous season’s successful Welsh Youth Cup winning side. He kept his place in the side for the rest of the season collecting a Welsh Cup winners' medal from a 1-0 win over Cardiff City.
He became an established member of the side during 1960-61, and it was not long before the bigger clubs began to take an interest. In February 1961 Arsenal paid £15,500 to take him to Highbury, and he made his debut in a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers on 22 April 1961. He broke through intermittently in the 1961-62 season, making 14 league appearances as an attacking midfiielder, scoring twice. Unable to maintain a first-team place, Griffiths returned to Wrexham in September 1962.
The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is a brass band, based in Grimethorpe, South Yorkshire, England. It was formed in 1917, as a leisure activity for the workers at the colliery, by members of the disbanded Cudworth Colliery Band. The band has 28 players.
The year after the band's formation saw it enter its first competition at Belle Vue in Manchester. Its first radio broadcast was in 1932 and from 1941 to 1951 was on UK national radio every month.
George Thompson was musical director from the early 1950s until 1972 during which time the band won the British Open Contest for the first time. Thompson was followed by Elgar Howarth as Professional Conductor and Musical Director. 1974 saw the band, along with Black Dyke Mills Band, become the first to perform at The Proms.
The band continued through the industrial troubles of the 1980s and the closure of Grimethorpe Colliery on 13 October 1992. However the Band gained first place with 99 out of 100 on 17 October 1992 in the National Brass Band Championship at the Royal Albert Hall.

And so I chose the night to be my dominion
Beauty, hope and joy all lay behind
All things good were no longer my companions
Buried with the soul that I let die
Then I sang the first hymn
And I filled a river red with blood
Drenched my whole world in sin
Left my city in dust
The few believers wanted to be picked
Praying to their God like some pious lunatics
Their sins were deadly, my lies, their truth
I opened up the gates and let them crawl through
To sing their first hymn
Filled their river with blood
Drenched their whole world in sin
Built their cities of dust
Drenched their whole world in sin
River red with blood
Built their cities of dust
I sang the first hymn
And I filled a river red with blood
Drenched my whole world in sin
Left my city in dust
I sang the first hymn
I filled a river red
I sang the first hymn
River red with blood
Once freedom came for me, and for my wearied soul
Prisoner of life I'd be no more
But the taste of blood had grown far too sweet
So I chose to walk the road that I was on
So I sang the next hymn
Filled a river with the death of love
And wallowed in my sin
Left my city in dust
Filled a river red with blood
A small investment in blood, such a small price to pay
Layin' down in the cellar for the last forty days
Light the colored candles, and bring rain to my grave
When you live inside a circle of salt, you're near the end of your days
A small investment in blood, such a small price to pay
Layin' down in a circle of salt for the last forty days
'Cause wide is the gate, so broad is the way
When you live inside a circle of blood, you make a great investment in hate
A great investment in hate
All the jealous husbands seek the end of their mates
Wide is the gate
All the faithless ladies seem to wither away
Layin' down inside their circle of thought, nearing the end of their days
So wide is the gate, and broad is the way
Wide is the gate, so broad is the way
Yes, wide is the gate, so broad is the way
When you live inside a circle of blood, you make a great investment in hate
A great investment in hate
A great investment in hate
A great investment in hate
What's the count Jack?
I long for peace of mind
Tortured and thrilled at the same time
Betrayed by a bitch and her kiss
Wait until they get a good look at this
What's the count Jack?
What's the count Jack?
What's the count Jack?
What's the count Jack?
What's the count Jack?
What's the count Jack?
I knock on wood just for luck
The death of hope down a dark alley block
Relieved by the knife left in her back
So ask yourself now, what's the count Jack?
What's the count Jack?
Here's a hook to hang your guilt upon
I left you two rings, two cents, and two combs
All of you fooled by the rapture of man
Ask yourself now, what's the count my friend?
What's the count Jack?
What's the count Jack?
What's the count Jack?
To rip the bitch wide and crawl inside
My heart leaps out into the night
And so the thrill left a mark on her back
So ask yourself now, what's the count Jack?
Here's a hook to hang your guilt upon
I left you two rings, two cents, and two combs
All of you fooled by the rapture of man
What's the count my friend?
Two rings, two cents, and two combs
Here's a hook to hang your guilt upon
All of you fooled by the rapture of man
Ask yourself now, what's the count my friend?
Trade my soul, I'd trade my soul
Give my like to that rock and roll
Down on my knees howlin' like a dog
Prayin' to my God, lookin' for the right road
Won't somebody hear my plea
Somebody help me please
Trade my soul, I'd trade my soul
Give my like to that rock and roll
Down on my knees howlin' like a dog
Prayin' to my God, lookin' for the right road
Trade my soul, yeah maybe I will
Sell my soul, yeah maybe I will
Trade my soul, maybe I will
Catch up with you in Robinsonville
Annie May's dad makes the white liquor
He's got a piano, a floor and a shack
You can stay all night long
Drink and pick out a song
Pick up a dollar if you pass the hat
Maybe I will
Sell my soul, yeah maybe I will
Catch up with you in Robinsonville
Sell my soul, maybe I will
Maybe I will
My neck hurts from throwin' it back so much
My back is twisted in knots from leanin' on my crutch
But I know somethin' that'll make me well
Just forward all my mail to Robinsonville
Maybe I will
Maybe I will
Unborn, a fresh young girl
Frail with the weight of the world
Already bent at the beauty of the night
Sent from heaven, unwanted on Earth
She brings her blessing wrapped in a curse
She was sent from heaven, to be unwanted on Earth
Her heart pounds its' terrible rhythm
One second of peace, she ain't gonna give them
Her wheel of misfortune spins 'round again
She's on you like the sun on the sand
Her wheel of misfortune spins your way again
Deep in her darkness lies her greatest fear
Beneath her ivory snow veneer
She promises to take you far away from here
Beneath her ivory snow veneer
Lies her greatest fear
Deep in her darkness, she can take you far away from here
Her heart pounds its' terrible rhythm
One second of peace, she ain't gonna give them
Her wheel of misfortune spins 'round again
She's on you like the sun on the sand
Her wheel of misfortune spins your way again
Her beauty burned right through my soul
Thought I would breathe once more
The search had ended there and now I'd be reborn
Like a pleasure ride through woman fair
I fell without a care
She promised me sanctuary but I found no salvation there
Her heart pounds its' terrible rhythm
One second of peace, she ain't gonna give them
Her wheel of misfortune spins 'round again
She's on you like the sun on the sand
Her wheel of misfortune spins your way again
Her wheel of misfortune spins 'round again
She's on you like the sun on the sand
Her wheel of misfortune spins your way again
She's got a tale, a tale to tell
That she's beautiful, beautiful as hell
Why did you lie, you lied to me
Like the promise of pleasure, never to be reached
Why did you lie, lie to me
Like the pleasure of a promise, never to be breached
She's got a tale, a tale to tell
That she's beautiful, beautiful as hell
She's got a tale, a tale to tell
Tortured soul, you, you long for one
Greater than the sum of love
Gone forever is the morning sun
Can it be forever gone
She was lovely once, she was
So much greater than the sum of love
All the things I wanted most
Were much greater than the sum of love
Filled with pride, my life was lost
Denied the joy of the greater good
Lovely was the morning sun
So much greater than the sum of love
I could not search for what was lost
I had to turn my back and walk
Away from all I wanted most
Was much greater than the sum of love
Filled with pride, my life was gone
Denied the joy for the greater good
Lovely was the morning sun
So much greater than the sum of love
So much greater than the sum of love
Half of me wants to find religion
The other half of me says no
Half of me needs to find a rhyme and a reason
The other half just don't know what for
How can I ever be, all I'm ever gonna be
When half of me wants to be good
When half of me wants to be good
Half of me wants to taste the blood and the body
The other half still has some doubts
Half of me wants to walk the road to salvation
And the other half wants to go south
How can I ever be, all I'm ever gonna be
When half of me wants to be good
How will I ever see, all I'm ever gonna be
When half of me wants to be good
Half of me wants to find religion
But I didn't know it was lost
Half of me wants to burn down the mission
And make off with the poorbox
Half of me wants to be, something I may never be
And half of me knows who's at fault
How will I ever be, all I'm ever gonna be
When half of me wants to be good
Half of me wants to go down the right road
And half of me wants to go wrong
Half of me feels like a goddamned savior
Who only needs a good nail to get crossed
How will I ever be, all I'm ever gonna be
When half of me wants to be good
How will I ever see, all I'm ever gonna be
When half of me wants to be good
When half of me wants to be good
When half of me wants to be good
Now I am bound, I am caught
I am tied with a lover's knot
I am bound, caught, tied with a lover's knot
Like a fly, caught in your web
I could break free, or I could wait for death
I am bound, caught, tied with a lover's knot
Bound, caught, tied with a lover's knot
I walked in, to that room
And I fell under the spell of her perfume
And I got lost with that lover's knot
Can't break away
And here I'm gonna stay
Caught in that lover's knot
One day soon, she might let me be
Maybe one day soon, she'll let me break free
Till then I'm bound, I am caught, tied with that lover's knot
Won't someone show me the way
And one day I will be gone
She promised me everything
And she gave it to me
Bound, caught, tied with that lover's knot
A crepe it hangs upon a wreath of black
Comes a gentle rock of a baby casket
Forth and back, this way, then that
Its eyes not yet wide open, a heart born already broken
Its eyes not yet wide open, a heart born already broken
Still a tiny smile crawls across his lips
Not an angel, but not quite a man
Gifted with tooth, almost a fang
Hooves afoot and claws almost at hand, gifted with tooth, almost a fang
His eyes not yet wide open, a heart born already broken
His eyes not yet wide open, a heart born already broken
Still a tiny smile crawls across his lips, with evil at his fingertips
Still a tiny smile crawls across his lips, with evil at his fingertips
The sun does rise and will set in his eyes
Do no wrong, only right in her mind
The mother of the newborn evil
Does not realize
His eyes not yet wide open, a heart born already broken
His eyes not yet wide open, a heart born already broken
The sun does rise and will set in his eyes
Do no wrong, only right in her mind
The sun does rise and will set in his eyes
The mother of the newborn evil
She trembled like a virgin movin' toward her wedding bed
Stumbled down that hallway like the dawn of the dead
Crept in like a creature, tryin' to crawl right through your soul
She brought in a winter chill that stayed till she was gone
She knelt down to pray like she thought it might be
Something that she could hold over me
Now she crept in like a creature
So sweet you'd love to beat her
Fell down on her knees
Prayin' to the thieves that stole her soul
She was prayin' to the thieves that stole her soul
She brought in a winter chill that just stayed till she was gone
Now she trembled like a virgin movin' toward that wedding bed
Stumbled down the hall like the dawn of the dead
Crept in like a creature, tryin' to crawl right through your soul
She knelt down to pray like she thought it might be

He was a man just a simple man
His thoughts and pleasures were few
His bread he shared with his father
That was the life that he knew
And how the snow fell in Kiev today
And how the wind drove the mourners away
Now there is only one man at the grave of Davorian
And this man's heart is to heavy to pray
Nah Nah ...
Nah nah ...
He was a man just a simple man
Died at the place of his birth
His tombstone shared by the family
A silent place on the earth
An old man stands by the side of the grave
And this man's heart is too heavy to pray
For he is numb with the pain
Of the love that he couldn't share
Until he died there in Kiev today
Dah dah dah ...
Nah nah nah ...
He was a man just a simple man
Died at the place of his birth
His tombstone shared by the family
A silent place on the earth
An old man stands by the side of the grave
And this man's heart is to heavy to pray
For he is numb with the pain
Of the love that he couldn't share
And two men died there in Kiev today
Lah lah lah ...
Nah nah nah ...
Dah dah dah ...
In this world, so full of hatred
Broken bodies, broken souls
Wars are ranging for all times
Darkness creeps inside your heart
Look around you now
and tell me just what you see
people are living in darkness
look around you
their eyes aren't alive any more
you can reach no one's soul
Is this the end?
What's this for?
No one can hear
Screams behind the door
Fallen angel, oh hear my prayer
World has become, world has become hell
All alone now, let me die here
The enemy waits right behind you
Look around you now
and tell me just what you see
people are living in darkness
look around you
their eyes aren't alive any more
you can reach no one's soul
Is this the end?
What's this for?
No one can hear
Singing all night with the music of light
Dancing around, sun is finding it's way
This magical music takes hold of me
Now I feel so free in the wind
Singing with you
Here by the rainbow
Dancing around
Whispering your name
Singing with you
I want to ask you
If you'd like with me to stay
Now that we're dancing in streaming
light
In the old ballroom with you by my side
Between young maids and noble knights
It feels like inside a dream
The shining sunlight is warming my face
Looking to heaven, a gentle embrace
With you beside me I feel so alive
Lying in fresh summer fields
Singing with you
Here by the rainbow
Dancing around
Whispering your name
Singing with you
I want to ask you
If you'd like with me to stay
Now that we're dancing around and
around
Hypnotized by the colours and sounds
Stars are no longer out of reach
And I feel so free
Singing with you
Here by the rainbow
Dancing around
Whispering your name
Singing with you
I want to ask you
Roll in the barrels and bring in the jugs
Quick, set the tables and ask in the bards
Tonight when the setting sun lights up the
mountain
The king is having a glorious feast
Brothers and sisters raise your cups
High in the air
Fill them again and drink it up
Celebrate
Light up the torches and let's dance to-
gether
Raise your hands high up into the air
Tomorrow there will be a new beginning
But now we gonna drink one more beer
Brothers and sisters raise your cups
High in the air
Fill them again and drink it up
Celebrate
Deep in the forest lies
a castle ruined by time
It's stones lay there
as the centuries went by
If they could speak they
would tell a traveller
Stories from long passed days
of battles and of feasts
Among this walls there
once has been life
Babies were brought into
the world and old men died
Characters from ancient past
Awake up in my fantasy
Mighty kings and noble knights
Come to lfie once more
From far away I hear a sound
it appears to me
That in a minute a hunt with
horses and hound will ride back in
Characters from ancient past
Awake up in my fantasy
Mighty kings and noble knights
Come to lfie once more
Characters from ancient past
Awake up in my fantasy
Mighty kings and noble knights
Come to lfie once more
All this dreamy fantasy
Makes me fall asleep
And another day passed
I look into the darkened sky
I feel the wind moving
Deep in my veins I feel it all
It flies away
The darkness comes and captures me
He takes my breath away
Inside of me a demon wakes
I feel my strength
I got a feeling deep inside
I'm not alone in here
I hear his breath, he's all around
The time has come
You're close behind me
Touching my skin with your breath
I can feel your pale lips
Desirously searching my neck
Let us conquer the night
Following your burning lust
We reach the point
Of no return
My body feels enlightened warmth
Your resurrecting kiss
My blood is moving through your veins
Now I'm your bride
You're close behind me
Touching my skin with your breath
I can feel your pale lips
Desirously searching my neck
Let us conquer the night
Following your burning lust
We reach the point
Of no return
You're close behind me
Touching my skin with your breath
I can feel your pale lips
Desirously searching my neck
We have conquered the night
The world has now come to an end
We; ve reached the point
The king's eldest son hasn't ever married
The king was raged and has decreed:
The lady who performs the task he has set
Shall become the prince's lawful wife
Go to the darkest cave
The dragon's sleeping there
I hope your heart is strong
Kill him with your mighty sword
Go to the darkest cave
THe dragon's sleeping there
This takes you three days long
I wish you wisdom and faith
Two of the three have died in battle
They have fought with swords and greatest
spears
But the last and youngest sang a tune so
lovely
The dragon dropped off to enchanted sleep
Go to the darkest cave
The dragon's sleeping there
I hope your heart is strong
Kill him with your mighty sword
Go to the darkest cave
THe dragon's sleeping there
This takes you three days long
I wish you wisdom and faith
A passions glory
Moonlight singing hope and joy
The prince has nor married
A faithful heart
Midwinter poetry
A passions glory
Dancing at the setting sun
The old dragon's dead now
And the king's son has found his one
The night turned to a sunny morning
The gentle breeze is full of hope
But they can not see that after nightfall
The eyes of the dragon glow in the dark
Go to the darkest cave
The dragon's sleeping there
I hope your heart is strong
Kill him with your mighty sword
Go to the darkest cave
THe dragon's sleeping there
This takes you three days long
I'm so alone
I have lost all I ever wanted
Only his love I have kept in me
He's gone away and my heart turns so cold and empty
He left me alone to bleed
From far away I can hear voices in the darkness
I feel so said and I dream of him
At even fall he met me on the bridge of waters
He held me tight and the time stood still
At this night-time I felt alive
I saw the moon rising, up in the sky
At this evening he came to me
And he said he loved me more than his life
There's no love that lasts forever
Without him my hearts is crying
There no life left inside her
Without him I'll die
There's no love that lasts forever
The coldness has come to take me
There no life left inside her
My heart turns to stone
There's no love that lasts forever
Without him my hearts is crying
There no life left inside her
Without him I'll die
At this night-time I felt alive
I saw the moon rising, up in the sky
At this evening he came to me
And he said he loved me more than his life
There's no love that lasts forever
Without him my hearts is crying
There no life left inside her
Without him I'll die
There's no love that lasts forever
The coldness has come to take me
There no life left inside her
My heart turns to stone
There's no love that lasts forever
Without him my hearts is crying
There no life left inside her
Without him I'll die
Now with the wind I just feel that my soul grows colder
I dream of him, darkness is my light
I sence that I'm dying and I'm lying on the
bridge of waters where we met
He left his home when he grew up
To reach the stars
He wandered around everywhere
To find the place of dreams
The light was pale
THe moon was shining down on him
He walked alone through the night
Searching for more wisdom
What more could he say
He's hoping to find the light of day
But deep inside him he knows
That sunlight is far more away
An owl was howling from a tree
The wind was cold
Fading away in the dark
Glimmering moon shadow
He was afraid inside
He didn't know the way
Shallow lake sang a song
He fell in his knees and prayed
What more could he say
He's hoping to find the light of day
But deep inside him he knows
That sunlight is far more away
The day has died
And the night has passed away
ANd now for him there's just nothing to say
And soon he'll find in the rain of the night
That every journey will come to and end
He was alone and sad
Beside a willow tree
Crying for sense in his life
He finally realized
In all his life he searched
For truth so far away
But the truth itself
Lay dep within his soul
What more could he say
Now he was found light of day
Still deep inside him he know
Tell me, can you watch the sun
Can you stand it
Oh tell me, can you watch the sun?
Come on it's fun
As we're riding on flaming wings
We fly towards the stars
Tell me, can you watch the sun
Can you stand it?
Oh tell me, can you watch the sun
And take the first step?
Sometimes I wish I could fly away
Leave everything behind and go my own way
Listen to the words of my longing heart
Follow the written path of my destiny
Tell me, can you watch the sun
Can you stand it?
Oh tell me, can you watch the sun
And feel it's heat?
For the path is a rocky one,
The journey will last
Tell me, can you watch the sun
Can you stand it?
Oh tell me, can you watch the sun
And go to the end?
Sometimes I wish I could fly
Leave everything behind and go my own way
Listen to the words of my longing heart
When I look back I see your face
The smile in your eyes
The moments that we both shared come to
my mind
Those wonderful times
In my life you were the one
who loved me in spite of myself
It hurt to say a last goodbye
And watch you drift slowly away by my
side
Let the sadness go away
Let the rain wipe away my tears
For forever my heart belongs to you
And I know you'll be always near
There's no one waiting at the door
It's empty inside
But every place tells me the story of
Your life by my side
While other friends came and went
You stayed by me, one true heart
I'll never find taht peace again
You were there for me, you could under-
stand
Let the sadness go away
Let the rain wipe away my tears
For forever my heart belongs to you
And I know you'll be always near
Let the sadness go away
After everything we've been through
You forever will stay inside my heart
I will always remember you
I can not fill the space you left
It won't be the same
No matter where I go and what I see
This silence remains
Forgive me if I did something wrong
Cause I've never meant to hurt you
So fast the years passed us by
There's never enough time to say goodbye
Let the sadness go away
Let the rain wipe away my tears
For forever my heart belongs to you
And I know you'll be always near
Let the sadness go away
After everything we've been through
You forever will stay inside my heart
I will always remember you
When I look back I see your face
The smile in your eyes
The moments that we both shared come to
my mind
Those wonderful times
Forgive me if I did something wrong
Cause I've never meant to hurt you
So fast the years passed us by
