Baltic states
The Baltic states, also known as the Baltics, Baltic nations or Baltic countries (Estonian: Balti riigid, Baltimaad, Latvian: Baltijas valstis, Lithuanian: Baltijos valstybės), are the three countries in northern Europe on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Baltic states cooperate on a regional level in several intergovernmental organizations.
While the indigenous populations of Latvia and Lithuania are known as Baltic people, those of Estonia are Finnic people. Another Baltic identity, Baltic German, began to develop during the Middle Ages after the Livonian Crusade.
Linguistic and historical considerations intersect in defining the concept of "Baltic states": for example, while Latvian is phylogenetically related to Lithuanian (both belonging to the Baltic group of the Indo-European language family) Estonian belongs to a completely different family – the Uralic languages. At the same time, despite considerable linguistic proximity, politically Latvia and Lithuania have gone different ways for most of their history, Lithuania at one point forming a commonwealth with Poland, giving rise to one of the largest countries in Europe at the time; while Latvia has shared most of its history with Estonia, both being governed by a Baltic German élite for more than 700 years. The Livonians (a nearly extinct ethnic group closely related to Estonians) have also participated in the ethnogenesis of Latvians: according to most accounts, the assimilation of (Uralic) Livonians by ancient (Indo-European) Baltic tribes formed the basis of what are today known as the Latvian language and Latvians.

Occupation of the Baltic states
The occupation of the Baltic states refers to the military occupation of the three Baltic states—Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania—by the Soviet Union under the auspices of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact on 14 June 1940 followed by their incorporation into the USSR as constituent republics, unrecognised internationally by most countries. On 22 June 1941 Nazi Germany attacked the USSR and within weeks occupied the Baltic territories. In July 1941, the Baltic territory was incorporated into the Reichskommissariat Ostland of the Third Reich. As a result of the Baltic Offensive of 1944, the Soviet Union recaptured most of the Baltic states and trapped the remaining German forces in the Courland pocket until their formal surrender in May 1945. The Soviet "annexation occupation" (Annexionsbesetzung or occupation sui generis) of the Baltic states lasted until August 1991, when the Baltic states regained independence.
The Baltic states, the United States and its courts of law, the European Parliament, the European Court of Human Rights and the United Nations Human Rights Council have all stated that these three countries were invaded, occupied and illegally incorporated into the Soviet Union under provisions of the 1939 Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, first by the Soviet Union, then by Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1944, and again by the Soviet Union from 1944 to 1991. This policy of non-recognition has given rise to the principle of legal continuity, which holds that de jure, or as a matter of law, the Baltic states had remained independent states under illegal occupation throughout the period from 1940 to 1991.

After making our way from Poland, we entered our first Baltic country Lithuania to explore its capital of Vilnius. After leaving Lithuania, the next Baltic country on our road trip was Latvia. It was only a 3 1/2 hour drive from Vilnius to the Latvian capital of Riga. Our first must see sight in Riga is the House of the Blackheads. We also recommend seeing the Cat House, and visiting the Black Magic Bar to try Riga Black Balsam. For Latvian cuisine, our recommendation is Key to Riga. We recommend trying the Latvian national dish (grey peas with bacon) with a local beer.

The northernmost and final Baltic state we visited was Estonia. It’s about a 4 hour drive from Riga, Latvia to Estonia’s Capital of Tallinn. Our first must see sight in Tallinn, Estonia is Toompea Hill in the Old Town. Toompea Hill is home to Toompea Castle and Estonia’s parliament building. We also recommend the Danish King’s Garden where you can see the well-preserved medieval wall. Finally, visit the hipster area of Kalamaja. To experience medieval dining in Tallinn, we recommend the Third Dragon and Olde Hansa.

01:20 Baltic States: Overview
So what are and where are the Baltic States? The Baltic States or simply the Baltics are three countries in Northeastern Europe, some may call it Northern Europe, some may call it Eastern Europe, but Northeast is probably the option with less controversy.
And these countries are Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
02:25 Cost of Living
We are going to start with the cost of living. Since the three countries use the same currency, it is actually pretty easy to identify differences in their cost of living, even though they are not extremely high.
If we take the cost of living data of all three Baltic States, we can clearly see that Estonia is the most expensive of them all.
Estonia made efficient government reforms before Latvia and Lithuania did them, and also managed to attract a huge number of foreign investors and companies.
Currently, Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is the most expensive city in the Baltic States.
Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania has consumer prices slightly lower than Riga, the capital of Latvia.
03:27 Salaries
When talking about cost of living, we must talk about salaries, because they determine the purchasing power for residents to have access to local products and services.
And here once again we have Estonia at the top, for similar reasons that also push the cost of living up, these very same reasons also push salaries up high in the most Northern of the Baltic States.
Tallinn is the city with the highest salaries in the Baltic region. Average net salaries as of today hover around 1250 EUR per month. In Vilnius, average net salaries are around 1000 to 1100 euros per month. Riga comes last in terms of salaries, with an average of 900 euros per month.
Cities in the Baltic States which are not capitals tend to have salaries significantly lower than in the capitals.
04:17 Real Estate
The next topic is pretty tied to salaries and cost of living: we’re going to talk about Real Estate.
Real estate in the Baltics has a similar trend in all of the 3 countries. The capital cities have quite high prices, some medium cities like Kaunas and Tartu have moderate prices, and everywhere else prices are extremely low.
Tallinn and Vilnius come at the top here, with prices per square meter at around 3k euro in the center of these cities. Riga is definitely cheaper, and you can find a lot of central area properties with prices at 2000 euros per square and even below that.
This causes a lot of real estate in these areas to have virtually no value. It is quite common to find apartments or houses in the countryside of Latvia or Lithuania selling for 10000 euros or less.
05:18 Transportation
Now we come to the next part of our video which is transportation. The transportation infrastructure in the Baltics is quite unique. Since these countries are some of the most sparsely populated in Europe, do not expect to find metro stations in any of the Baltic countries.
If you are flying into the Baltic States, the city with the best connections is Riga, since is the main hub for airBaltic, Latvia’s flag carrier.
06:22 Visa and Residence Permits
Now we are going to talk about visa and residence permits. In terms of visas, these countries are very similar, since they are all in the Schengen area. But in terms of residence permits, this is one of the aspects in which the three countries have the sharpest differences.
Latvia is the best country in the Baltic region to get a residence permit if you are a non-EU citizen. There are residence permits for freelancers, residence permits for company owners, residence permits if you buy real estate, and even a residence permit if you just park some money in a Latvian bank interest free.
In Estonia, there are already significantly less options. It is possible to get a residence permit in Estonia as a self-employed person or by opening a company, so there are still good options. Estonia also has a visa for digital nomads, but since it is not renewable I wouldn’t call it an excellent deal.

01:20 Baltic States: Overview
So what are and where are the Baltic States? The Baltic States or simply the Baltics are three countries in Northeastern Europe, some may call it Northern Europe, some may call it Eastern Europe, but Northeast is probably the option with less controversy.
And these countries are Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
02:25 Cost of Living
We are going to start with the cost of living. Since the three countries use the same currency, it is actually pretty easy to identify differences in their cost of living, even though they are not extremely high.
If we take the cost of living data of all three Baltic States, we can clearly see that Estonia is the most expensive of them all.
Estonia made efficient government reforms before Latvia and Lithuania did them, and also managed to attract a huge number of foreign investors and companies.
Currently, Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is the most expensive city in the Baltic States.
Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania has consumer prices slightly lower than Riga, the capital of Latvia.
03:27 Salaries
When talking about cost of living, we must talk about salaries, because they determine the purchasing power for residents to have access to local products and services.
And here once again we have Estonia at the top, for similar reasons that also push the cost of living up, these very same reasons also push salaries up high in the most Northern of the Baltic States.
Tallinn is the city with the highest salaries in the Baltic region. Average net salaries as of today hover around 1250 EUR per month. In Vilnius, average net salaries are around 1000 to 1100 euros per month. Riga comes last in terms of salaries, with an average of 900 euros per month.
Cities in the Baltic States which are not capitals tend to have salaries significantly lower than in the capitals.
04:17 Real Estate
The next topic is pretty tied to salaries and cost of living: we’re going to talk about Real Estate.
Real estate in the Baltics has a similar trend in all of the 3 countries. The capital cities have quite high prices, some medium cities like Kaunas and Tartu have moderate prices, and everywhere else prices are extremely low.
Tallinn and Vilnius come at the top here, with prices per square meter at around 3k euro in the center of these cities. Riga is definitely cheaper, and you can find a lot of central area properties with prices at 2000 euros per square and even below that.
This causes a lot of real estate in these areas to have virtually no value. It is quite common to find apartments or houses in the countryside of Latvia or Lithuania selling for 10000 euros or less.
05:18 Transportation
Now we come to the next part of our video which is transportation. The transportation infrastructure in the Baltics is quite unique. Since these countries are some of the most sparsely populated in Europe, do not expect to find metro stations in any of the Baltic countries.
If you are flying into the Baltic States, the city with the best connections is Riga, since is the main hub for airBaltic, Latvia’s flag carrier.
06:22 Visa and Residence Permits
Now we are going to talk about visa and residence permits. In terms of visas, these countries are very similar, since they are all in the Schengen area. But in terms of residence permits, this is one of the aspects in which the three countries have the sharpest differences.
Latvia is the best country in the Baltic region to get a residence permit if you are a non-EU citizen. There are residence permits for freelancers, residence permits for company owners, residence permits if you buy real estate, and even a residence permit if you just park some money in a Latvian bank interest free.
In Estonia, there are already significantly less options. It is possible to get a residence permit in Estonia as a self-employed person or by opening a company, so there are still good options. Estonia also has a visa for digital nomads, but since it is not renewable I wouldn’t call it an excellent deal.

We had an epic time road tripping through the Baltic capitals of Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn. Our week long Baltic road trip includes our favorite sights in each of the three Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. We also give our recommendations for must try Baltic food.
After making our way from Poland, we entered our first Baltic country Lithuania to explore its capital of Vilnius. The Old Town of Vilnius is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to our first must see sight, Cathedral Square. We also recommend visiting Literary Street, and the Republic of Užupis. Our recommendations for Lithuanian cuisine are Leičiai for Vilnius mead and local beer, and Loky's for Lithuanian beetroot soup and boiled potato zeppelins.

After leaving Lithuania, the next Baltic country on our road trip was Latvia. It was only a 3 1/2 hour drive from Vilnius to the Latvian capital of Riga. Our first must see sight in Riga is the House of the Blackheads. We also recommend seeing the Cat House, and visiting the Black Magic Bar to try Riga Black Balsam. For Latvian cuisine, our recommendation is Key to Riga. We recommend trying the Latvian national dish (grey peas with bacon) with a local beer.

The northernmost and final Baltic state we visited was Estonia. It’s about a 4 hour drive from Riga, Latvia to Estonia’s Capital of Tallinn. Our first must see sight in Tallinn, Estonia is Toompea Hill in the Old Town. Toompea Hill is home to Toompea Castle and Estonia’s parliament building. We also recommend the Danish King’s Garden where you can see the well-preserved medieval wall. Finally, visit the hipster area of Kalamaja. To experience medieval dining in Tallinn, we recommend the Third Dragon and Olde Hansa.

We absolutely LOVED it! The great thing about a Baltic road trip is that it's fairly flat, so you can stick the car in cruise control and take in all the beautiful views that surround you.
A Baltic road trip adventure is cheap too, as they're some of the cheapest countries in mainland Europe!
The sights are amazing, the people are friendly and the food is delicious.

01:20 Baltic States: Overview
So what are and where are the Baltic States? The Baltic States or simply the Baltics are three countries in Northeastern Europe, some may call it Northern Europe, some may call it Eastern Europe, but Northeast is probably the option with less controversy.
And these countries are Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
02:25 Cost of Living
We are going to start with the cost of living. Since the three countries use the same currency, it is actually pretty easy to identify differences in their cost of living, even though they are not extremely high.
If we take the cost of living data of all three Baltic States, we can clearly see that Estonia is the most expensive of them all.
Estonia made efficient government reforms before Latvia and Lithuania did them, and also managed to attract a huge number of foreign investors and companies.
Currently, Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is the most expensive city in the Baltic States.
Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania has consumer prices slightly lower than Riga, the capital of Latvia.
03:27 Salaries
When talking about cost of living, we must talk about salaries, because they determine the purchasing power for residents to have access to local products and services.
And here once again we have Estonia at the top, for similar reasons that also push the cost of living up, these very same reasons also push salaries up high in the most Northern of the Baltic States.
Tallinn is the city with the highest salaries in the Baltic region. Average net salaries as of today hover around 1250 EUR per month. In Vilnius, average net salaries are around 1000 to 1100 euros per month. Riga comes last in terms of salaries, with an average of 900 euros per month.
Cities in the Baltic States which are not capitals tend to have salaries significantly lower than in the capitals.
04:17 Real Estate
The next topic is pretty tied to salaries and cost of living: we’re going to talk about Real Estate.
Real estate in the Baltics has a similar trend in all of the 3 countries. The capital cities have quite high prices, some medium cities like Kaunas and Tartu have moderate prices, and everywhere else prices are extremely low.
Tallinn and Vilnius come at the top here, with prices per square meter at around 3k euro in the center of these cities. Riga is definitely cheaper, and you can find a lot of central area properties with prices at 2000 euros per square and even below that.
This causes a lot of real estate in these areas to have virtually no value. It is quite common to find apartments or houses in the countryside of Latvia or Lithuania selling for 10000 euros or less.
05:18 Transportation
Now we come to the next part of our video which is transportation. The transportation infrastructure in the Baltics is quite unique. Since these countries are some of the most sparsely populated in Europe, do not expect to find metro stations in any of the Baltic countries.
If you are flying into the Baltic States, the city with the best connections is Riga, since is the main hub for airBaltic, Latvia’s flag carrier.
06:22 Visa and Residence Permits
Now we are going to talk about visa and residence permits. In terms of visas, these countries are very similar, since they are all in the Schengen area. But in terms of residence permits, this is one of the aspects in which the three countries have the sharpest differences.
Latvia is the best country in the Baltic region to get a residence permit if you are a non-EU citizen. There are residence permits for freelancers, residence permits for company owners, residence permits if you buy real estate, and even a residence permit if you just park some money in a Latvian bank interest free.
In Estonia, there are already significantly less options. It is possible to get a residence permit in Estonia as a self-employed person or by opening a company, so there are still good options. Estonia also has a visa for digital nomads, but since it is not renewable I wouldn’t call it an excellent deal.
Lithuania is the country with the least options in terms of residence permits for non-EU citizens. To open a company and get a residence permit, you need to hire at least one Lithuanian or EU national.

Now let’s talk about the languages of the Baltic region. Each country has its own national and official language. In Estonia, Estonian, in Latvia, Latvian, and in Lithuania, Lithuanian.

The Baltic states, also known as the Baltics, Baltic nations or Baltic countries (Estonian: Balti riigid, Baltimaad, Latvian: Baltijas valstis, Lithuanian: Baltijos valstybės), are the three countries in northern Europe on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Baltic states cooperate on a regional level in several intergovernmental organizations.
While the indigenous populations of Latvia and Lithuania are known as Baltic people, those of Estonia are Finnic people. Another Baltic identity, Baltic German, began to develop during the Middle Ages after the Livonian Crusade.
Linguistic and historical considerations intersect in defining the concept of "Baltic states": for example, while Latvian is phylogenetically related to Lithuanian (both belonging to the Baltic group of the Indo-European language family) Estonian belongs to a completely different family – the Uralic languages. At the same time, despite considerable linguistic proximity, politically Latvia and Lithuania have gone different ways for most of their history, Lithuania at one point forming a commonwealth with Poland, giving rise to one of the largest countries in Europe at the time; while Latvia has shared most of its history with Estonia, both being governed by a Baltic German élite for more than 700 years. The Livonians (a nearly extinct ethnic group closely related to Estonians) have also participated in the ethnogenesis of Latvians: according to most accounts, the assimilation of (Uralic) Livonians by ancient (Indo-European) Baltic tribes formed the basis of what are today known as the Latvian language and Latvians.
