Thankfully, he also knows how to edit. While Feig tells Yahoo Movies that there were no scenes that hurt him to cut from "The Heat," he admits that trimming Bullock and McCarthy's hijinks was easier said than done. "When Sandra and Melissa had their noses taped up in the bar — that entire take makes me still just kind of cry with laughter when I'm watching it," he said. "That's just them completely ad-libbing all that stuff and it's just so funny."
That's what the Blu-ray is for, right?
One more thing you should know that Feig knows: socks. The man is perpetually dapper – unlike most directors, he wears a full suit on set every day – all the way down to his toes. You can see his purple footwear in the photo above if you don't believe us. He wore a darker shade when we sat down for dinner with him in New York City to celebrate the big home video release just after we quizzed him on his pop culture obsessions.
1. What was the first movie you saw? A "Winnie the Pooh" movie — I think it was a short and the movie that it was in front of was "Robin and the 7 Hoods," which was a Rat Pack movie. I remember there was a musical number and Sammy Davis Jr. jumped on a table with a machine gun and starting shooting it and I just went crazy and had to be taken out of theater because it was way too loud. So my first actual movie experience was traumatic.
2. What movie makes you cry? "Harold and Maude."
3. Who is the movie character you wish you could be? I'd love to be James Bond, but a close second is Marcello Mastroianni in "8 1/2," although sometimes I feel like I am when things are going wrong, but without the cool, handsome part.
4. What comedy still makes you laugh even when seeing it for the 20th time? "Bringing Up Baby."
5. What movie do you wish you could unsee? Oh my, so many … There's a few home movies that my dad took when I wish a kid that I wish didn't exist.
6. What do you eat/drink while watching a movie in the theater? I tend not to have anything because I get very amped up ... I get very excited when I watch a movie and if I drink any water I have to go to the bathroom so I tend to stay away from all stuff. But if I go to a premiere where they're giving out free popcorn then I'll definitely grab a popcorn.
7. What movie do you quote the most? I love "Dr. Strangelove." Probably that and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."
8. What's the TV show you never miss? It was "Breaking Bad," but now it's gone. Also "Game of Thrones," "Homeland," "Boardwalk Empire." … "The Soup!" I never miss "The Soup." It's my wife and my favorite show all together. But I don’t watch a lot of scripted comedies on TV, not for any specific reason like I'm so cool, it's just that it's my job and so it's kinda fun for me to watch the dramas.
9. What TV show would you like to live in? "Downton Abbey."
10. Who is your TV crush? I really like Claire Danes. I think she's awesome. But I also really like Katie Lowes on "Scandal." I think she's great. She's so cute, and she's just such a great actress. That Kerry Washington's not bad either.
11. What's the guiltiest pleasure currently on your DVR? My guilty pleasure used to be "The Millionaire Matchmaker."
12. What is your karaoke song? "Viva Las Vegas."
13. What is your favorite album? It's hard to name one, but the one that pops to mind is Weezer's "Pinkerton" album.
14. What was your first concert? The Beach Boys. I'd never been to a concert before and I'd heard all kinds of scary things about concerts and then this was very mellow and it was cool. It was still a lot of the original members because this was back in the mid-'70s, so I just remember it being a really cool experience.
15. What song was playing during your first kiss? The very first kiss, there was no music playing. It was just a horrifying thing, but weirdly enough but my first make out session, it was Eddie Rabbitt's song "Drivin' My Life Away," which is a terrible song to make out to because it's very bouncy.
16. What website do you visit when no one is watching? I mean, it should be something trashy, but it's actually a great site. The Sartorialist, I think that's the greatest. I'm really into clothes and fashion and stuff and I just like seeing what people are wearing in the world and he takes the greatest photos of people.
17. Who is your favorite Tweeter? That's a tough one 'cause there's so many funny people. Robert Delaney cracks me up but I also like Rob Huebel — he's so funny, he just absolutely kills me. And Patton Oswalt is always just hilarious.
18. What article of clothing can you not live without? A suit.
19. Did you have a poster of a celeb on your wall as a kid? Who? Steve Martin. He was my absolute comedy hero in that age and I got into him right before he kind of broke big. … He hadn't kind of broken in the suburbs of Michigan, so I memorized all his albums and would repeat his routines at school and everybody thought they were mine and I didn't dissuade them from that belief. And then he became very popular and everybody realized I had completely ripped off Steve Martin so I've learned a valuable lesson. But every poster of Steve Martin I could find was on my wall.
20. Have you ever dressed as a celeb for Halloween? Who? Groucho Marx.
