At least 14 people have been killed after a powerful typhoon passed close to the Japanese capital, reports say.

Typhoon Wipha caused landslides and flooding on Izu Oshima island, south of Tokyo.

Many people died when houses collapsed or were buried in mudslides. Two were found dead near a river.

At the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, operators pumped out rain water from around storage tanks holding contaminated water.

In Tokyo, flights were cancelled, bullet train services suspended and schools closed.

At least three people have been killed in a suicide attack in Afghanistan, the day after US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived there for crucial talks.

A car blew up outside a police station in Jalalabad. Two Afghan policemen and a civilian died. Several people were injured.

Most foreign forces are due to withdraw from the war-shattered country by the end of next year but Washington wants to maintain a military presence.

Kerry and Afghan President Hamid Karzai have narrowed some of their differences in discussing a security deal.

  • Updated: 16 Oct 2013
At least 14 people have been killed after a powerful typhoon passed close to the Japanese capital, reports say. Typhoon Wipha caused landslides and flooding on Izu Oshima island, south of Tokyo. Many people died when houses collapsed or were buried in mudslides. Two were found dead near a river. At the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, operators pumped out rain water from around storage tanks holding contaminated water. In Tokyo, flights were cancelled, bullet train services suspended and schools closed. "It is the strongest typhoon in 10 years to pass the Kanto [Tokyo area] region," Hiroyuki Uchida, the Japan Meteorological Agency's chief forecaster, told journalists on Tuesday. 'Crackling sound' The storm brought strong winds and record rainfall - 122mm (4.8 inches) in one hour on Wednesday morning - to Izu Oshima island, which lies some 120km (75 miles) south of Tokyo. Officials on the island said that 13 bodies had found and more than 50 people were unaccounted for. "We have no idea how bad the extent of damage could be," town official Hinani Uematsu said. Local media described mud and debris strewn around houses. "I heard a crackling sound and then the trees on the hillside all fell over," a woman on the island told national broadcaster NHK television. "Then mud slid as far as the house." Rescuers were struggling to access many areas, local reports said. "City hall and fire station officials are doing rescue work in places accessible," a local official told AFP news agency. In Tokyo, a woman died after falling in a river and a search was under way for two young boys last seen on a beach, reports said. Around 400 domestic and international flights were also cancelled in the capital, Kyodo news agency said. Nearly 20,000 people were ordered to evacuate and thousands of schools shut as a result of the typhoon, Reuters news agency reported. Typhoon Wipha was expected to move north-east and weaken over the course of the day. Around midday it passed close to the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, where contaminated water used to cool reactor cores is being stored in temporary tanks. Plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company said on Tuesday that it had made "preparations for proper management of contaminated water" and would "patrol places that could have inflows of water [from the storm]". Izu Oshima, a volcanic island popular with tourists, has more than 8,000 residents. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-24531140

George W. Bush undergoes successful operation to clear artery blockage in heart Subcribe http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJNKZJFyq8Uw0iFAL9jaSOA?sub_confirmation=1 follow us TWITTER @newsdailyplanet Former President George W. Bush's unexpected surgery Tuesday to clear artery blockage in his heart served as a reminder that even the fittest and most health-conscious must be watchful of cardiovascular disease. Doctors discovered on Monday the blocked artery during Bush's annual physical examination at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas. The famously fit 67-year-old then had a stent implanted in his heart Tuesday at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. Bush spokesman Freddy Ford said the former president is "in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule on Thursday." Experts said the operation wasn't all that unusual for someone like Bush, who proudly refers to himself as an "aging baby boomer." But the health scare still came as a surprise, given that Bush is an exercise fanatic who showed no outward symptoms of distress. The news came on the heels of the sudden death last month of Dallas radio personality Kidd Kraddick, a 53-year-old who suffered heart problems. And Bush -- whose devotion to mountain biking and golf is legendary -- used his experience this week to push others to check on their health. That includes a special attention to heart disease, the leading killer of men and women in the United States. "He encourages us all to get our regular check-ups," Ford said, adding that Bush wanted to thank his doctors and well-wishers. Officials at the Cooper Clinic and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital declined to comment further on Bush's exam or operation. But a Bush official confirmed that Dr. Tony Das of Cardiology and Interventional Vascular Associates performed the stent operation. The Cooper Clinic's website also outlines in more detail the preventative exam that Bush undertook. It covers six areas, ranging from a laboratory analysis to a skin cancer screening to a nutrition consultation. A good portion of the exam focuses on cardiovascular health, particularly for men and women at least 40 years old. That includes a fitness test, an electrocardiogram and an upper torso scan that "detects buildup in the heart's arteries." Cardiology experts said both Bush's problem and solution were common. About 600,000 Americans die each year from heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 715,000 Americans each year have a heart attack each year, the result of arteries clogged by cholesterol. Major risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking. But many people, like Bush, show none of the common symptoms, such as tightness in the chest and shortness of breath. The blockage typically builds up slowly over many years, causing heart disease to sometimes become a silent killer. Experts said that highlights the need for those with risk factors to get periodic screenings. "It's very important for the public to understand that it's not necessarily pain," said Dr. Gaurav Gupta, an interventional cardiologist at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Some artery blockage can be resolved by medication. The most serious cases result in heart bypass surgery. But an intermediate option -- chosen for Bush -- is to implant a stent to clear the blockage and prop open the artery.
