Redd Kross, a rock band from Hawthorne, California had their roots in 1978 in a band called The Tourists begun by Jeff and Steve McDonald while the brothers were still in middle school. With the addition of friends Greg Hetson and Dave Keller on guitar and John Stielow on drums, the band's first gig was opening for Black Flag.

Shonen Knife
Shonen Knife, written in Japanese characters as 少年ナイフ, which transliterates as Shōnen Naifu, literally "Boy Knife," is an all-female Japanese pop-punk band formed in Osaka, Japan, in 1981. Heavily influenced by 1960s girl groups, pop bands, The Beach Boys, and early punk rock acts, such as the Ramones, the trio crafts stripped-down songs expressing infectious melodies and simplistic, exuberant lyrics sung both in Japanese and English.

The exploits and misadventures of film character impersonators and celebrity look-a-likes on Hollywood Boulevard. Freddy Krueger works alongside Marilyn Monroe, Shrek, Lucy, Batman and Borat. Competing Chewbaccas, Supermen and Captain Jack Sparrows vie for a spot on the limited real estate of The Walk of Fame. These street characters have big dreams of breaking into the big time, in the meantime they forge a living one dollar at a time posing for photos with tourists. These characters are literally right out of the movies, yet the unforeseen drama of the people underneath the make-up threatens to eclipse the bizarre array of Hollywood film icons they appropriate. (aka Steve's Bass Is Stolen, An Incriminating Video By Dave Markey). Steven McDonald, (bassist of Redd Kross) is joined by friends Thurston Moore, Jennifer Schwartz, Pat Fear, and Dave Markey as they attempt to deal with a Hollywood area music store who has put Steve's former beloved bass guitar on sale in 1994. The bass was stolen 12 years previous to this documentation. Steve had personalized the guitar in such a way that it was entirely unique, and the serial number was clearly altered. No amount of witnesses, photographic evidence, police presence or discussion helped the situation. Steve later purchased his stolen bass from the said store, happy to have the instrument back, which he recorded "Born Innocent" on. But does the store owner act like he was innocent?

Source 2?: There are accounts of a Dave Markey video recording of this show. Mr Markey did record the 4/3/87 VAC video as well as the 10/21/88 VAC Riot footage, so it's very possible it exists. I was told however, Mr Boone, not Mr. Markey, is the source of this particular source. If another source is out there, it has never seen the light of day, and from what I hear, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting fer it to turn up. As a self-taught filmmaker and musician, Markey directed, produced, edited, and photographed most of his films, the majority of which has been self-funded and distributed. His work documents the punk scene in Southern California throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Markey has worked with Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Redd Kross, The Ramones, Black Flag and the Meat Puppets.
Markey made his first film in 1974 at the age of 11 with his father’s hand-wound 8mm Brownie camera, cast from the children of his Santa Monica, California neighborhood. Markey soon discovered the burgeoning LA Punk Scene a few years hence through bands like X, Black Flag, & Redd Kross in 1980. Markey was driven to form his own band, Sin 34, in 1981 as well as Painted Willie in 1984. He also started We Got Power fanzine that year along with Jordan Schwartz spawning Markey’s cinematic Super-8 cult punk scene documents. These films were distributed underground and critically well received, putting Markey on the Cinematic Punk map before he was of legal age.
