Guardian Media Group plc (often referred to as GMG) is a company of the United Kingdom owning various mass media operations including The Guardian and The Observer. The Group is owned by the Scott Trust.

The company was founded as the Manchester Guardian Ltd in 1907 when C. P. Scott bought the Manchester Guardian from the estate of his cousin Edward Taylor. It became the Manchester Guardian and Evening News Ltd when it bought out the Manchester Evening News in 1924, later becoming the Guardian and Manchester Evening News Ltd to reflect the change in the morning paper's title. It adopted its current name in 1993. Its previous chief executive was Carolyn McCall, formerly Chief Executive of Guardian News and Media Limited and a former non-executive director of Tesco and chair of Opportunity Now. McCall left in June 2010 after being appointed Chief Executive of EasyJet. She was replaced by Andrew Miller in July 2010, he had previously been Chief Financial Officer of the Group.^[1]

In March 2007 GMG sold 49.9% of Trader Media Group to Apax Partners, in a deal that valued Trader Media Group at £1.35 billion. In December 2007 it was announced that GMG and Apax had made a successful bid to buy Emap's business-to-business arm for around £1 billion.^[2]

In February 2010, the group sold its GMG Regional Media division (consisting of two companies MEN Media and S&B Media which operated 31 local and regional newspaper titles) to Trinity Mirror plc for £44.8 million. The sale ended the historic connection between The Guardian and the Manchester Evening News.^[3] The division's local television station for Greater Manchester, Channel M, and two newspapers in Woking were not included in the sale.

GMG has various divisions and joint venture businesses: Guardian News & Media (the Guardian, the Observer, guardian.co.uk); GMG Radio (regional radio stations under the Smooth, Real, and Rock Radio brands); Trader Media Group (the Auto Trader magazine and website), which it owns jointly with private equity firm Apax); GMG Property Services (estate agency software providers Vebra and Core, lettings software provider CFP Software, graphic design consultancy The Media Design House and consumer portal ThinkProperty.com); and Emap, the B2B events, data and publishing company, also jointly owned with Apax.

Guardian Media Group exists to support the core purpose of its owner, the Scott Trust: to secure the financial and editorial independence of the Guardian in perpetuity.^[4]

A media conglomerate, media group or media institution is a company that owns large numbers of companies in various mass media such as television, radio, publishing, movies, and the Internet. Media conglomerates strive for policies that facilitate their control of the markets across the globe.^[1]

According to the 2011 Fortune 500 list, The Walt Disney Company is America's largest media conglomerate in terms of revenue, with News Corporation, Time Warner, CBS Corporation and Viacom completing the top 5.^[2] Other major players are NBCUniversal, and Sony Corporation of America.

Terminology[link]

A conglomerate is, by definition, a large company that consists of divisions of seemingly unrelated businesses.

It is questionable whether media companies are unrelated, as of 2007^[update]. The trend has been strongly for the sharing of various kinds of content (news, film and video, music for example). The media sector is tending to consolidate, and formerly diversified companies may appear less so as a result. Therefore, the term media group may also be applied, however it has not so far replaced the more traditional term.^{[citation needed]}

Criticism[link]

Critics have accused the larger conglomerates of dominating media, especially news, and refusing to publicize or deem "newsworthy" information that would be harmful to their other interests, and of contributing to the merging of entertainment and news (sensationalism) at the expense of tough coverage of serious issues. They are also accused of being a leading force for the standardization of culture (see globalization, Americanization), and they are a frequent target of criticism by various groups which often perceive the news organizations as being biased toward special interests.

There is also the issue of concentration of media ownership, reducing diversity in both ownership and programming (TV shows and radio shows). There is also a strong trend in the U.S. for conglomerates to eliminate localism in broadcasting, instead using broadcast automation and voice tracking, sometimes from another city in another state. Some radio stations use prepackaged and generic satellite-fed programming with no local content, except the insertion of radio ads.

Steve Tappin (born Harrogate 5 September 1966) is a CEO confidant for the leaders of some of the world's leading companies, the CEO of Xinfu and author of The Secrets of CEOs.

Early career[link]

Tappin began his career with the chemical giant ICI. After he left, Tappin was mentored by Sir John Harvey-Jones.^[1] He has spent his career either as a CEO hmself or as a managing partner in a number of global professional service firms. Once such business he founded was edengene, a growth and corporate venturing consulting firm. Under Tappin's leadership, edengene won "Best Small Firm" and the "Gold Medal award for client work" from the Management Consultancies Association.

Current focus[link]

Tappin is a CEO coach and a personal confidant for many of the CEOs from the world's top companies. He is actively involved in many of the top performing global businesses such as Virgin, Deloitte, RSA and Bain Capital. He is also working with CEOs from some of the leading Chinese and Indian businsses applying The Secrets of CEOs.^[2] He regularly visits China and is writing a new book about Chinese CEOs, Dream Corporations, Dream Leaders, Dream life, which will be published by Beijing University Press.^{[citation needed]}

Tappin has written an international best selling^{[citation needed]} book with Andy Cave, a journalist with The Daily Telegraph. The book was launched on 10 September 2008 in the UK and is a best seller in the UK, Singapore, India and China.^{[citation needed]} The book is based on interviews with 150 global CEOs including John Browne, Baron Browne of Madingley, Ben Verwaayen, Michael Dell, Narayana Murthy, Liu Jiren, Sir Martin Sorrell and Caterina Fake. Richard Branson has written the foreword.^[3]

Carolyn McCall OBE (born 13 September 1961 in Bangalore, India),^[1][2] is the current Chief Executive of EasyJet.

The only child of British expatriate parents (her Scottish father ran the Far East division of a US textile multinational; her Irish mother worked for the British embassy in India),^[1] she was educated in India and Singapore until her teens, then at a Roman Catholic girls' boarding school in Derbyshire. She studied for a BA degree in history and politics at the University of Kent, Canterbury, where she met her husband Peter (the couple have three children and live in Berkhamsted).^[1]

On graduation she began training as a teacher, completing a year at Holland Park School. She then gained a Master’s in politics from the University of London, and on graduation joined construction group Costain. Offered a job on Kevin Kelly's Business magazine, she then applied to be a research planner at the The Guardian, where she started in 1986.^[1]

Moving to advertising sales, she was mentored by Caroline Marland. Rising through the Guardian Media Group behind Marand, Management Today magazine called her "One of the toughest operators to have risen through the Guardian Media Group's ranks."^[1] After rising to become CEO of Guardian Newspapers Ltd (now Guardian News & Media Ltd), she became CEO of GMG. During her tenure she sold the Manchester and regionally based business to Trinity Mirror, and a 49.9% of Trader Media Group to Apax Partners, in a deal that valued the business at £1.35bn.^[1]

McCall was non-executive director of Lloyds TSB (2008–2009), New Look (1999–2005; a position to which she was reappointed in 2010); and Tesco (2005–2008), a position from which she had to resign after Tesco sued The Guardian for libel.^[3] She was chair of the Business in the Community project Opportunity Now,^[4] and has also acted as President of Women in Advertising and Communications London.

On 24 March 2010, it was announced that McCall has been appointed the next Chief Executive of easyJet plc.^[5] She is said to prefer a "pragmatic approach to Human Resources rather than politically correct niceties".^[6]

McCall was named Veuve Clicquot Business Woman of the Year in April 2008, and in June awarded the OBE for services to women in business in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Trevor Vusumuzi Ncube (born 9 September 1962) is a Zimbabwean entrepreneur and newspaper publisher now living in South Africa.

Ncube was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. He publishes South Africa's Mail & Guardian weekly newspaper, part of The Guardian group of newspapers and in Zimbabwe, sister publications The Zimbabwe Independent,The Sunday Standard and Newsday.

Ncube holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Economic History from the University of Zimbabwe. He was a teacher at Pumula High School in the early 1980s. In 1989 he became assistant editor at The Financial Gazette, and became executive editor in 1991.^[1] In 1994, he was named Zimbabwean Editor of the Year.

On 10 December 2005, Ncube had his passport taken away by the government of Robert Mugabe, in the first application of restrictive press freedom laws.^[2] The passport was later returned after the seizure was exposed to be illegal.^[3] The government of Zimbabwe tried again, unsuccessfully, to strip him of his citizenship on the basis that his father was born in Zambia. The attempt was seen by many as an attempt to close his newspapers which are highly critical of the government of Zimbabwe's president, Robert Mugabe.^[4][5] Zimbabwean law does not allow foreigners to own newspapers.

In 2008, Trevor Ncube won the prestigious German Africa Award, given by the German Africa Foundation for his dedication for press freedom, human rights and democracy in Zimbabwe and the whole of Southern Africa.
