Gardai have objected to free legal aid for one of the three men arrested in connection with a €1.2m heroin seizure on the grounds that he is wealthy enough to own a villa in Spain.
Shane Maloney (27), of Drimnagh Road, Drimnagh, Brian Fitzpatrick (21), with an address at Orchard Lawns, Ballyfermot and Andrew Anderson (23), of Kylemore Drive, Ballyfermot, all Dublin, appeared before Cloverhill District Court on separate charges of possession of drugs and possession of drugs for sale or supply.
All three were remanded in custody with Mr Maloney to appear again on Wednesday, September 3 and Mr Anderson and Mr Fitzpatrick due back on Thursday, September 18.
The latter two were given consent to bail but Mr Maloney was remanded in custody without bail by Mr Justice William Earley.
Mr Maloney also made an application for free legal aid but Detective Diarmuid Maguire from the Organised Crime Unit objected on the grounds that he believed Mr Maloney had sufficient personal wealth to cover his own legal costs.
Det Maguire said Mr Maloney "has a villa in Spain", adding that he was not just a drugs courier.
Offences
Judge Earley said he would let the matter stand until the next hearing on September 3.
Further charges against Mr Maloney relating to driving offences were also withdrawn.
Gardai made the 6kg heroin haul on August 10 when they stopped four cars at Kennelsfort Road, Palmerstown in Dublin.
The seizure was part of an operation by the Organised Crime Unit, the Garda National Drug Unit and Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
