ReCap is used for site context and documentation, with simulated flythroughs and other visualization techniques to help with 2D, 3D and 4D planning. HNTB Chicago Transit Authority Wilson Station Wilson Station is a major Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) station for Chicago's 'L' or elevated metro system. Originally built in 1923 and located on the L's Red Line, the station serves more than two million passengers each year. As part of a modernization and expansion of its Red Line, the CTA is completely reconstructing the deteriorating station. The rebuilt station will also be a major new transfer point between the CTA's Red and Purple Lines. In addition to the rebuilt stationhouse, the project includes the restoration of the station's original 1923 terra cotta façade and its former clock tower; dual island platforms to allow transfers between the two lines; two new auxiliary entrances; and significant track and structural work. The facility will span two active streets and several historical buildings in Chicago's Uptown district. During the reconstruction, the station and surrounding streets will be open. HNTB is providing architectural, structural, traction power, communications, train control, mechanical, and environmental mitigation support services on the project. HNTB employed Autodesk Revit Architecture, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Autodesk Navisworks, AutoCAD, Autodesk 360, and Autodesk InfraWorks for improved project design, visualization, collaboration, coordination, and preconstruction planning. The team created 3D intelligent project models that included architectural, structural, and rail discplines, as well as existing infrastructure and nearby structures. HNTB used LiDAR technology to quickly capture the existing conditions along the entire length of the track and surrounding building, and convert that data to create a 3D model of the complex site. This helped the HNTB team precisely locate existing track, buildings, roadways, piers, and city infrastructure to coordinate its design of the track realignment and new station, and facilitate cross-discipline clash detection. The Autodesk software and project models were also used for preconstruction planning and simulation, to help ensure that the station and surrounding area will be accessible during construction. HNTB modeled a number of construction staging alternatives to formulate plans for temporary closures of entries, exits, and road sections, and develop strategies for demolishing and rebuilding the tracks while maintaining operations. To communicate their strategies to the client and the public, HNTB created model-based renderings and video animations demonstrating how construction can occur with minimal disruption to commuters and local business.
