Why Are American Health Care Costs So High?
In which John discusses the complicated reasons why the United States spends so much more on health care than any other country in the world, and along the way reveals some surprising information, including that Americans spend more of their tax dollars on public health care than people in Canada, the UK, or Australia. Who's at fault? Insurance companies? Drug companies? Malpractice lawyers? Hospitals? Or is it more complicated than a simple blame game? (Hint: It's that one.)
For a much more thorough examination of health care expenses in America, I recommend this series at The Incidental Economist: http://theincidentaleconomist.com/wordpress/what-makes-the-us-health-care-system-so-expensive-introduction/
The Commonwealth Fund's Study of Health Care Prices in the US: http://www.commonwealthfund.org/~/media/Files/Publications/Issue%20Brief/2012/May/1595_Squires_explaining_high_hlt_care_spending_intl_brief.pdf
Some of the stats in this video also come from this New York Times story: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/02/health/colonoscopies-explain-why-us-leads-the-world-in-health-expenditures.html?pagewanted=all
This is the first part in what will be a periodic series on health care costs and reforms leading up to the introduction of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, in 2014.

Health Care: Reversing Cost and Quality America's Poorest City: Dr. Jeffrey Brenner at TEDxPhilly
2013 MacArthur Fellow Dr. Jeffrey Brenner, MD is a family physician working to bend the health care cost curve the right way through patient engagement. Recognizing the need for a new way for hospitals, providers and community residents to collaborate on health, Dr. Brenner founded the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers, working to build an integrated health delivery model to provide better care for Camden, New Jersey residents. As the Coalition's Executive Director, Dr. Brenner spends much of his time meeting with stakeholders and policymakers, advocating for the models of care the Coalition has developed and demonstrated through data centric results. His goal is to ensure that families who live in urban, underserved communities receive high-quality, culturally competent, personalized family health care. Fixing health care is not a technical problem -- it is a moral, ethical and political problem. "Go out and meet the most expensive people in the city and build health care around extreme patients," while lowering costs at the same time.

The 2011 TEDxPhilly conference examined vast interpretations of the theme "The City" on Tuesday, November 8. TEDxPhilly brought together engaging speakers, performers, participants and exhibitors to deconstruct, decipher and explore some of the greatest challenges, innovations, concepts and realities that shape and are shaped by cities and their inhabitants. Philadelphia was the point of departure, but the conversation traveled beyond its borders. The event took place at Temple Performing Arts Center in North Philadelphia.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Reinventing Health Care: Lessons from the Field
"Reinventing Health Care: Lessons from the Field" marks the release of the summary report of the Aspen Institute Health Innovation Project. For the past two years, the experts of the Health Innovation Project — convened in 2011 by the Aspen Institute in partnership with WellPoint Inc. — endeavored, first, to outline a path to a more-perfect system of American health care. Those recommendations were released in the 2012 white paper, "Reinventing Health Care: The Barriers to Innovation."
Armed with that report, the Project's leaders then took to the road to shine a spotlight on notable providers, community-based organizations, and insurers across the country that are advancing innovation that improves patient care and enhances efficiency. "Lessons from the Field" is a survey of those innovators and the programs on the verge of changing the face of American health care.
On September 25, our innovators and experts will discuss these findings and the lessons they may hold nationally.

Bigger Pizzas: A Capitalist Case for Health Care Reform
In which John discusses some of the many ways that our current massively inefficient health care system leads to the irrational allocation of capital. He discusses the fascinating cases of Henry Reich (creator of http://www.youtube.com/minutephysics) and Hank Green (creator of, you know, all this) and how in a world without health care reform, their careers might look very different. John argues that employer-dependent health insurance privileges employees over entrepreneurs, thus limiting innovation, growth, and job creation.
