A History of Sound Recording Final
A History of Sound Recording Final
A History of Sound Recording ● What was created? ○ The phonograph was a device that used a stylus to scratch a pattern created by sound waves into a rotating tinfoil cylinder. When the stylus was placed into the groove, it played back whatever sound it had picked up when it was first etched. However, there was a slight flaw in the invention; the tinfoil could only be played through several times before it would wear away and become unusable. As this new technology was introduced in America, it was inevitable that people would seek to improve the item. The tinfoil was replaced with wax for use on a graphophone, then, glass and zinc replaced the wax on the gramophone. The cylinder was also replaced with a hard rubber record, which formed the shape of albums that we recognize today. After the rubber records, shellac records became popular, and they spun much faster at about 78rpm (rotations per minute). Longplaying (LP) plastic vinyl Records soon took their place as they could record over 20 minutes of sound whereas the shellac could only record 4 minutes. The inventions of tape recorders, CDs, and DVDs followed. Today, we mostly use MP3 format and listen to music directly from our new, handheld electronics. ● Who created it? ○ Thomas Edison created the phonograph on July 12th, 1877. ○ Alexander Graham Bell created the graphophone between 1879 and 1886. ○ Emile Berliner created the gramophone on November 8th, 1887. ○ Shellac records were introduced in America in 1915. ○ Columbia Records introduced the LP Record in 1948. ○ The first tape recorder was built in August of 1935 by Fritz Pfleumer, Theo Volk and Friedrich Matthias, but they were not widely recognized until about 1954. ○ The Compact Disc (CD) and player have been commercially sold since 1982 and were invented by James Russell in 1965. ○ The creation of the Digital Versatile Disk (DVD) and player began in 1993 when large companies like Sony and Toshiba worked collaboratively. ○ The first MP3 player was created in 1997 by Tomislav Uzelac. ● Why was it created? What need did it address? ○ The inventions that followed the phonograph did not address a need, but a want. Recording and reproducing music became an early form of electronic entertainment. People, by human nature, crave entertainment, so sound recording devices quickly became popular. Edison was working to improve the telegraph and telephone, and discovered a barely audible sound that resembled a human voice. He then tried to make a way to record and reproduce the sound and he succeeded in creating the phonograph. The phonograph was created because Edison was curious. ● How did it change history? ○ The phonograph started a snowball of technology rolling down a snowy hill of inventors. It led to improved technology in digital and nondigital sound recording. ○ It led to the creation of many industries based solely upon sound recording and reproduction technology, which employ thousands of people. It has had an impact on the economy with music sales circulating more money and with music award shows and channels on television. ○ It has led to the production of new genres of music, such as harmonization in songs and the electronic music of the 80s and forward.- published: 14 May 2014
