(HD) Roma San Pietro to Civitavecchia - Trenitalia Class E.464 27/03/13
Now available in 1080p HD!
From the cold of
England, we move to a somewhat more exotic location and find ourselves in
Italy, where today we ride the rails from
Rome's
San Pietro station to
Civitavecchia, the ancient
Roman Harbour on the
Mediterranean coast:
1.
Roma San Pietro station was opened in 1894 on the Roma -
Livorno -
Pisa railway and later on the Roma -
Capranica -
Viterbo railway. It is also the sight of the junction for the short Roma -
Vatican City railway which diverges just north of the station.
Today the station sees a variety of traffic, ranging from Pendolino and InterCity Frecciabianca services to Trenitalia regional services.
Regional services are predominantly run by the company's fleet of double-deck ALe 426/502 that were built between
1996 and
2000, mostly serving the Viterbo line, whilst regional services to Civitavecchia are usually run by the
FS Class E.464 which is paired with either single or double deck coaching stock.
The
E.464's were built by
Bombardier between 1996 and
2013 to replace the ageing E.424 and E.646 locomotives. The fleet of 570 locomotives are powered by 3000V DC and are easily adaptable to various forms of coaching stock, including the high capacity double-deck
Dosto stock or the more conventional single deck stock. Today's service is run by E.464.627, running a service from
Roma Termini to Civitavecchia.
2. After leaving San Pietro station, the line tunnels beneath the Roman suburbs and emerges near Roma
Aurelia station. Shortly before arriving at Maccarese -
Fregene station, the line joins the former route to
Ponte Galeria, which has now been mothballed and sees no routine usage as of 2013.
3. The countryside then flattens as the line crosses the
Centro Falconieri near Palidoro.
4. The next major location is Cerveteri--Ladispoli, which continues to boast a sizeable track layout although large portions of it lie redundant. Today it is mainly served by FS owned
Track Maintenance Machines.
5. The train once again increases speed as it passes across the flatlands between
Marina di
Cerveteri and Furbara.
6. At
Santa Marinella the line meets the
Mediterranean and runs along the coast above the numerous headlands that form this popular seaside resort.
7.
Near Civitavecchia, the prominent port facilities come into view, with ferries seen lining the horizon being prepared for services to
Elba,
Sardinia and
Corsica.
Enjoy!
