Mixed is an ethnicity category that has been used by the United Kingdom's Office for National Statistics since the 1991 Census. Colloquially it refers to British citizens or residents whose parents are of two or more different races or ethnic backgrounds. Mixed-race people are the fastest growing ethnic group in the UK and numbered approximately 1 million in 2009.

Statistics[link]

In the 2001 census, 677,177 classified themselves as of mixed race, making up 1.2 per cent of the UK population.^[2] Office for National Statistics estimates suggest that 956,700 mixed race people were resident in England (as opposed to the whole of the UK) as of mid-2009, compared to 654,000 at mid-2001.^[1] As of May 2011, this figure surpassed 1 million. ^[3] It has been estimated that, by 2020, 1.24 million people in the UK will be of mixed race.^[4]. Research conducted by the BBC, however, suggests that the mixed race population could already be twice the official estimate figure - up to 2 million.^[5].

3.5 per cent of all births in England and Wales in 2005 were mixed race babies, with 0.9 per cent being Mixed White and Black Caribbean, 0.5 per cent White and Black African, 0.8 per cent White and Asian, and 1.3 per cent any other mixed background.^[6]

Mixed-race people are the fastest growing ethnic minority group (defined according to the National Statistics classification) in the UK and, with all mixed categories counted as one sole group, are predicted to be the largest minority group by 2020 (above British Indian).^[7]

Subgroups[link]

In England and Wales, the 2001 census included four sub-categories of mixed ethnic combinations: "White and Black Caribbean", "Mixed White and Black African", "Mixed White and Asian" and "Any other Mixed background", with the latter allowing people to write in their ethnicity. Analysis of census results shows that, in England and Wales only, 237,000 people stated their ethnicity as Mixed White and Black Caribbean, 189,000 as Mixed White and Asian, 156,000 as Other Mixed, and 79,000 Mixed White and Black African.^[8]

The estimates for mid-2009 for England only suggest that there are 301,300 people in the Mixed White and Black Caribbean category, 127,500 Mixed White and Black African, 292,400 Mixed White and Asian, and 235,500 Other Mixed.^[1] The White and Black African group grew fastest in percentage terms from 2001 to 2009, followed by White and Asian, Other Mixed and then White and Black Caribbean.^[1]

The census forms in Scotland and Northern Ireland did not include sub-groups, but rather single categories: "Any Mixed Background" in Scotland and simply "Mixed" in Northern Ireland.^[9]

George Maxwell Alagiah OBE ( /ˌæləˈɡaɪə/; born 22 November 1955 in Colombo, Ceylon) is a British newsreader, journalist and television news presenter.

Since 3 December 2007, he has been the sole presenter of the BBC News at Six and has also been the main presenter of GMT on BBC World News since its launch on 1 February 2010. He is also the main relief presenter for the BBC's flagship bulletin BBC News at Ten and has held this role since its launch in 2000, making him the longest serving presenter of the flagship news programme.

Background[link]

Alagiah's parents, Donald Alagiah, an engineer, and Therese, were Tamils.^[1][2] In 1961 his parents moved to Ghana in West Africa, where he did his primary education at Christ the King International School.^[3] He spent his secondary education at St John's College, an independent Catholic boarding school in Portsmouth, England, after which he read politics at Van Mildert College, Durham University.^[3] Whilst at Durham, he wrote for and became editor of the student newspaper Palatinate and was a sabbatical officer of Durham Students' Union. He worked on South Magazine from 1982 until joining the BBC, where he was the Developing World correspondent based in London and then Southern Africa correspondent in Johannesburg.^[3]

In 2004, he returned to his grandfather's original home in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the Asian tsunami to survey the damage.^[3] The family's former home had been destroyed, though he was able to recognise an old well he had played at with his sisters, although the well was unsalvageable.

He is married to Frances Robathan.^[2]

Broadcasting career[link]

Alagiah joined the BBC in 1989 after seven years in print journalism with South Magazine.^[4] Before going behind the studio desk, George was one of the BBC's leading foreign correspondents, reporting on events ranging from the genocide in Rwanda, the plight of the Marsh Arabs in southern Iraq and civil wars in Afghanistan, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Somalia.^[3]

He was the presenter of BBC Four News from its launch in 2002; the programme was later relaunched as The World. and in January 2003 he joined the BBC News at Six, which he co-presented with Sophie Raworth until October 2005, and with Natasha Kaplinsky until October 2007. Since 3 December 2007, he has been the sole presenter of the Six O'Clock News. Prior to that, he had been the deputy anchor of the BBC News at One from 1999. From the 3 July 2006, he presented World News Today on BBC World News, which was rebranded GMT on the 1 February 2010. He is also a relief presenter on BBC News at Ten presenting mainly Monday - Thursday when Fiona Bruce is unavailable.

A specialist on Africa and the developing world, Alagiah has interviewed, among others, Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan and President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.^[3] His other documentaries and features include reports on why affirmative action in America is a 'Lost Cause', for the Assignment programme, Saddam Hussein's genocidal campaign against the Kurds of northern Iraq for the BBC's Newsnight programme and a report on the last reunion of the veterans of Dunkirk.^[4]

Awards and interests[link]

In 2000, Alagiah was part of the BBC team which collected a BAFTA award for its coverage of the Kosovo conflict. He has won numerous awards including Best International Report at the Royal Television Society in 1993 and Amnesty International's Best TV Journalist award in 1994. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours.

His appearances at literary festivals include Cheltenham, Keswick, Hay-on-Wye and London, and he has spoken at the Royal Geographical Society, the Royal Society of Arts and at the Royal Overseas League. He is on the Board of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

From 2002-09 George Alagiah was a patron of the Fairtrade Foundation ^[5] from which in July 2009, he was obliged to resign by BBC Management who claimed professional conflict of interest.^[6][7] Complaints were received at the BBC from the public who were unhappy that Alagiah had been asked to step down. The BBC responded that in keeping with its principles of impartiality, it would be inappropriate for one of its leading journalists to be seen supporting a movement that clearly represents a controversial view of global trade.^[8][9] He has also been actively involved in supporting microfinance as a tool for development, including recent appearances in support of Opportunity International. He has been a patron of Parenting UK since 2000.

Saira Khan (born 15 May 1970 in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, England) is a British television personality and was the runner-up on the first UK series of reality TV show The Apprentice in 2005.

Television career[link]

Khan has since become a regular face on British TV. In 2006 she presented on the BBC's Temper Your Temper, a programme dealing with anger management, and lifestyle show Desi DNA. She has presented several documentaries for the BBC and ITV, as well as appearing as a guest on a variety of shows such as Ready Steady Cook. She currently(2012) presents the cbbc show "Trade Your Way to the USA" and presented an edition of the BBC's Money Programme about entrepreneurial mothers. She is a columnist for the Daily Mirror, a regular panelist for BBC Radio 5 Live and has appeared on a number of other stations including BBC Radio 4 and the BBC Asian Network. She has also written a self-help book, P.U.S.H. For Success. In 2006 she set up a new campaign called OUR SAY to campaign for local and national referenda on issues of major public interest.^[1] Khan also runs her own baby-products business called Miamoo, and an orienteering business called "West Is East".^[2]

Khan also appeared in Mastermind Celebrity Edition where she came 4th. Saira Khan currently (2012) presents Trade Your Way to the USA shown on BBC1 and children's television channel CBBC.

Parents and her early life[link]

Khan's parents emigrated from the city of Rawalakot in Azad Kashmir to England in 1965.

At home they spoke only Urdu and Pahari with her mother not speaking any English. Her parents were eager for her to have an arranged marriage but could not find a match – "My parents were from an arranged marriage and wanted the same for me. My mother would invite young men to the house and get me to serve them tea on a tray. I didn't fancy any of them. It was just like East Is East."

Khan went to Brighton Polytechnic and then on to the University of Nottingham

Her father died from a heart attack in 1998 while visiting relatives in Kashmir – "I was absolutely devastated. For the first time I felt really alone."

Marriage and personal life[link]

While working at United Biscuits in 2002, Khan met Steve Hyde. They later married. Hyde runs a London-based online marketing agency.

In 2008 Khan gave birth to a baby boy, Zachariah. She had been diagnosed with endometriosis. In March 2011, she adopted a baby girl, Amara, from the Edhi Orphanage in Karachi, Pakistan.
