NBC Bay Area, NBC Universal’s Owned Television station in the San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose DMA, is looking for a Digital Editor for the Investigative Unit.  The Digital Editor will work closely with the Digital Lead, Assistant News Director, Investigative Reporters and Producers to create innovative content and platforms.  The goal is to build a conversation, community and engagement around NBC Bay Area’s investigative stories.  The Digital Editor will work directly with the investigative team on stories from inception to dissemination.

Committee to Protect Journalists releases report on Obama administration and the press

The Committee to Protect Journalists released a report today titled The Obama Administration and the Press, stating that “electronic surveillance programs deter government sources from speaking to journalists.”

President Barack Obama pledged open government as he entered office, but his administration has fallen far short of those promises, according to CPJ. Since 2009, six government employees and two contractors have been subjects of criminal prosecutions under the 1917 Espionage Act, compared to three in all previous administrations. Also, the Justice Department engaged in direct surveillance of the press by issuing subpoenas for reporters’ phone logs and emails.

Behind the Story: Two Cleveland reporters raise the issue of rape kits that sat untested for 20 years

Rachel Dissell and Leila Atassi wanted an answer to a seemingly simple question: how many untested rape kits did the Cleveland Police Department have in storage?

The answer: “We don’t know.”

The reporters’ question prompted Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine in 2011 to ask all Ohio law enforcement agencies to send their rape kits to labs for testing, some of which had been collecting dust for twenty years.

Friday Deadline for Dart Center Ochberg Fellowship

For journalists reporting on violent or traumatic events, the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma is accepting applications for its Ochberg Fellowship through Friday, Oct. 11.

Fellows will visit Columbia University for a week of training with a panel of mental health experts and journalists who have covered traumatic events.  A full list of the panelists and details on how to apply can be found on the Ochberg Fellowship's webpage.
