The dark fortnight which falls in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapad (September) is known as Pitr-Paksha or Mahalay Paksha all over the Hindu World. Shraddh is the name of the ceremonies performed by relatives to help the departed soul in Pitr-Paksha. Every Shraddh begins from Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha Purnima and remains till Amavasya. Purnima is the first day on which the Shraddh is performed, and Amavasya is the last one. Pitra Dosh is not a curse of the Ancestors, but it is a Karmic Debt of the ancestors. It is believed that performing this Shraddha brings happiness and prosperity at the home. Shraddha ceremonies have a special significance in HIndu religion. It is believed, The Lord of death, Yamaraja enables the dead ones our ancestors from Pitral Lok visit the earth during Ashwin Krishna Paksha come to earth and receive offers from there descendants. So this is a time when you can perform pujas to get rid of this dosha and get relief from the obstacles you are getting in your life. The soul of the ancestors visit their home with a desire of pind-daan or tilanjali and received a portion of their meal offered by their present generation, in the name of Shraddh. Thus, it is also believed that whatever we donate in the name of our ancestors is received by them also and ultimately you get there blessing. A person attains death on the basis of hind date and thus, his Shraddh is performed on the same date. People who do not remember the date of death of their ancestors can perform on Amavasya. Astrologically how we see pitra dosh in a horoscope. We see pitradosha from the ninth house. The ninth house is the house of fortune in the birth chart. The ninth house is the house of father and Sun as a Karaka planet of father is also the Karaka planet of progress, age, promotion and spirituality. This house has great importance because this house is also known as the house of father and manes. If Sun and Rahu form conjunction in this house then Pitra Dosha is formed in the birth chart, or if this house has a malefic effects then also this dosha occur. In simple words a Pitra Dosh is formed in the horoscope of a person due to bad Karmas or bad deeds done by the Ancestors of that person and this person is supposed to pay that Karmic debt by suffering the punishments decided for those debts, If your horoscope has this pitra dosh you should do some karmas on this time to remove or get relief from this dosha. The autumnal equinox falls within this period, i.e. the Sun transitions from the northern to the southern hemisphere during this period. In North India and Nepal, this period corresponds to the dark fortnight of the month Ashvin, instead of Bhadrapada. Pitru Paksha also marks annual Pitri Paksha Mela at Gaya on the banks of River Falgu. Pilgrims from all corners of the country visit Gaya for offering Pinda to their Ancestors. According to Bihar Tourism Department estimates, some 5,00,000 to 75,00,000 pilgrims arrive in the Gaya city during the Pitri Paksha Mela every year. The male who performs the shraddha should take a purifying bath beforehand and is expected to wear a dhoti. He wears a ring of kush grass. Then the ancestors are invoked to reside in the ring. The shraddha is usually performed bare-chested, as the position of the sacred thread worn by him needs to be changed multiple times during the ceremony. The shraddha involves pinda-daan, which is an offering to the ancestors of pindas (cooked rice and barley flour balls mixed with ghee and black sesame seeds), accompanying the release of water from the hand. It is followed by the worship of Vishnu in form of the darbha grass, a gold image or Shaligram stone and Yama. The food offering is then made, cooked especially for the ceremony on the roof. The offering is considered to be accepted if a crow arrives and devours the food; the bird is believed to be a messenger from Yama or the spirit of the ancestors.[2] A cow and a dog are also fed, and Brahmin priests are also offered food. Once the ancestors (crow) and Brahmins have eaten, the family members can begin lunch.
